Any thoughts / comments on this kid? He will attend Nat'l Underclassmen combine in Virginia in May and has been invited to attend Nike Camp in Missouri on June 1.

Thought some would enjoy watching this kid run. Cips are from 2 games this past season. Includes his 99 yard TD run. Only a few of his 2,143 rushing yards. What I think they wished for was to minimize the effects of schools that attempt to persuade certain athletes to attend certain schools. Although I am sure it happens on both sides, obviously the majority of delegates believe it occurs more frequently with the privates.I know a lot of posters believe that "persuasion" of 8th graders on where to attend high school is minimal. Its not minimal if it is happening to the school you support. At a lot of schools, losing a couple of above-average athletes can dramatically change a basketball or football program over the course of 4 years. In the future, I don't see the ones that have "persuaded" 8th graders to enroll in a certain high school now scouting out 6th graders to decide which ones they should attempt to persuade to attend the right school in the 7th grade. I would also assume that Southern Indiana will not be in the defined feeder pattern of any Jefferson County school, so future state championships will only be played with kids that live in Kentucky. Imagine that.

No, Cissell was injured diving for a pass that was over his head. He should have given up on the play but his mind doesn't work that way. He will be fine though. Currently doing box jumps with a weight vest everyday and doing cardio work. Will compete in Addias combine at Papa Johns on May 26 along with the Elmore kid. Although Cissell had a great sophomore year, he will be coming into this year stronger, faster, and in better shape than ever. He is now a solid 190. TREMENDOUS work ethic.

With the current playoff set up (playing district opponents the 1st two weeks) the regular season district scheduling is less important than before.

DJ Elmore, 6'1" 220 lb junior-to-be linebacker for North Bullitt. Has stepped it up in the weight room this winter and will be a force on defense for the Eagles this fall. Had some decleaters in spring ball.

If I read that interpretation correctly, then this would affect those who attend a private (non-public) middle school wishing to attend public high school differently than those who attend a public school wanting to switch to a private high school. Then again, if this measure is meant to appease the majority then I guess it shouldn't surprise anyone that it would.

Wouldn't Ms. DeVries attempt to keep this from being interpreted or implemeted in favor of public schools anymore than is obvious? I could be wrong, but I thought she had a parochial background?

A lot of posters have made excellent points and raised interesting and hard-to-answer questions that I am sure were not raised prior to passage. Perhaps in the future, KHSAA should run their ideas thru BGP before passing far-reaching proposals like this. Would have saved them a lot of headaches and $$ IMO. Post the proposal on BGP and let members have at it for awhile. Then again, I'm sure they think they already have ALL the answers! :thumb:

Still don't have an answer, but the conflict of interest issue is a problem. As an earlier post stated, Miller of PRP was on BOC when, what sounded like legit concerns of improper conduct by PRP, was brought up. I also believe Stan Hardin of Holy Cross was on BOC during the early stages of North's complaints against them.

One thing I think EVERYONE agrees on, from both sides of this issue, is that the current setup and leaders of the KHSAA are a complete mess. Their sorry track record of taking all complaints (on both sides) of improper conduct seriously and acting on them in a timely manner are what has led us to this sorry state of affairs. I would think the BOE should look into demanding some resignations for allowing things to get to this state. Someone already alluded to the fact that the Board of Control being made up of AD's from member schools many times presents a conflict of interest in decisions that impact a lot of people. They have a huge impact, no doubt, when something comes up that might have a negative effect on their school. Before anyone even asks, no I do not have any answers, just frustration like everyone else.

Covercorner, I understand and appreciate your reasoning. Although I am not familiar with Lexington schools, I have no doubt your assessment is accurate. You would represent a group that will be punished by this ruling in that you would have to pay for private school earlier than you would have otherwise. That is unfortunate. It is also unfortunate that, IMO, we have come to this because some groups and/or programs have found it necessary to skirt the rules and promote their schools/programs for the wrong reasons or in the wrong way.

I realize this is a separate discussion, but I believe the biggest difference between the educational atmosphere between public and privates overall is how they get their students. At a private school, parents pay a lot of hard-earned money to send their kids there and are therefore invested in seeing that they do well. Parent involvement is crucial in the development of successful students. Also, privates can, I assume, get rid of any kid that is not performing to their standards either academically or behaviorally. Public schools (non-traditional at least) must take everyone regardless of how they perform and, to a large extent, regardless of how they act. Courts even force consistent bad performers, both academic and behavior, back into the schools. As a 34 year resident of Bullitt County and having had 3 kids go thru public school there, I know students can be successful, as I said earlier, if they are hard-working and have parental support. I have no doubt that private schools offer a well-disciplined, highly competitive atmosphere along with motivated parents vested in seeing that their kids succeed. Now, as Trinity Alum stated, lets all promote the heck out of our schools, just agree that we shouldn't promote it more to the parents of what we feel are above-average athletes in public middle schools that might not make that decision otherwise. Surely we can agree on that.

North Bullitt will survive a tough early schedule going 1-1 in games against Lex. Lafayette and Shelby County. The Eagles go on to a 9-1 regular season and advance with district championship win over arch-rival Bullitt East. North wins regional over Lone Oak despite a great passing game by Corey Robinson. In semi's QB's R.D. Reynolds of North and Cortney Dalcourt both shine, but North's RB Dalton Cissell is the difference as North moves on. In state championship, North does the impossible as Dalton Cissell proves to be too much in the upset of Lexington Catholic. You said to be BOLD!

Heresay, the enrollment numbers on KHSAA website have DeSales at 304 and Holy Cross at 162, the only 2 schools with a history of making their presence felt at BCYFL. If DeSales is declared to be above 300 (assuming it would be in their best interest to petition to be declared a "small" private) it would be a big relief. Holy Cross is one of the smallest schools in the state. These are the only 2 schools that ALL three Bullitt County schools have trouble with. We have also had some very decent football players decide to attend Christian Academy. We never have heard about any improper contact by anyone associated with CA so we have no problem with them. AllTell, Allegations alone are not enough for sanctions. But the allegations made against Holy Cross occurred when the kids were 8th graders, the sanctions came when these kids were juniors. Thus, the offending party had 3+ years to continue improper activities that were proven. That is the problem I have with the current system. Improper contact is hard to prove and when proven the KHSAA is extremely slow to act. Had the KHSAA acted aggressively and swiftly, this matter could have been resolved easily within a year. Perhaps the publics felt the privates proposal for new investigative arm would just be more of the same. Ladiesballcoach is correct, current and former players and parents do become, in effect, a representative of the school. The type of contact described is illegal but almost impossible to prove for obvious reasons. This type of contact, I belive, is not what most public school officials are concerned with. However, if this same type of contact occurs with persons hanging out at middle school or little league sporting events "whispering in the ears" of above-average athletes in 7th/8th grade it becomes illegal recruiting. That is the problem I think the publics are most concerned about. Again, I realize this goes on both sides, but considering the vote of the delegates, it seems that the public school delegates feel it is much more of a problem among the private schools as is the case in Bullitt County. Therefore, I say that when the Oct '05 vote for separation nearly passed SOMEONE on the private side should have spoken with Leisa Speer, superintendent of the Archdiocese of Louisville schools and other parochial leaders in the state, and said "look, this thing isn't going to go away, "we" need to have a meeting and tell everyone to cool it and stop the visits to public youth sporting events. Mr. Shaughnessy would have been an excellent choice to make this bold move. Can't the parochial schools compete strongly with the kids that come up in their system without attempting to lure above-average 7th & 8th grade kids in public middle schools? I believe they can. The only barrier I see in Prop 2 is that parents that "know" they want their kids to attend private schools have to make an earlier committment. If it is the right choice for their kid, isn't it the right choice in grades 1-6 as well?

I have already agreed to the benefits of choosing a private school. The ONLY problem I have is when those who choose to do so happen to be above-average athletes that have been persuaded by persons associated with the private school. On the other hand, hard-working students with supportive parents can and do perform quite well in most public schools during and after high school.

I am also assuming that the "small school" provision means, in effect, that nothing has changed in Bullitt County, since both small parochial Jefferson County schools are within 30 miles of Bullitt County????

The problems with current leadership just came to light (at least to the majority of the public) and would not be the reason parents chose to send their sons to a private school in Jefferson County. The reason, I believe, is that parents come to believe that their son is "extra" special because someone representing a Catholic high school tell them the high school wants them to come play for them (as was proven concerning Holy Cross). As I stated earlier, there are a lot of good reasons for parents wanting their kid to attend a private school if they do so without being lured there. It just happens to be illegal for these persons to pursue kids in this way. The smaller Jefferson County parochial schools have long viewed Bullitt County as a good place to help find kids to increase their enrollment and bring in a few good football players each year. The KHSAA handbook specifically states the reason for the recruitment bylaw is to prevent young kids from being treated like seniors being recruited by colleges. This is what has gone on. If the KHSAA was more aggressive in their investigations we wouldn't even be having this discussion. They are not, thus the majority of delegates, right or wrong, brought up other proposals to force their hand. Most times, the only way to prove allegations is when the kids that were improperly contacted didn't choose to attend the school that made the contact. Even then, those kids and their parents must be willing to "get involved" and testify against the offending school. Schools, private or public, that choose to break the rules know that it has been highly unlikely that they will ever suffer any real consequences for their behavior. Thus, the risk has been worth it.

I guess I should have said most public officials don't think we own these kids. The investigation of Holy Cross didn't take very long, it was mostly the KHSAA dragging their feet to decide to investigate. If the proposed investigative arm was truly going to be independent, it would have been a good idea IMO, if it was to be controlled DeVries or Tackett, it would have not been any better than the present system. I agree that if the letter was produced PRP should have been sanctioned. I don't condone this type of cheating by anyone. Obviously, the majority of delegates saw this as being a bigger problem among privates than problems they had with neighboring publics. All I can speak to is the situation in Bullitt County, where we have had a LOT of problems over MANY years (a consistent pattern) with private schools from Jefferson County attempting to "persuade" above-average football players that attend public schools in Bullitt County to attend Catholic high schools. During the same period of time, we have had only a few isolated incidents of concern with illegal contact from public schools outside our system.

Heresay, I agree that the biggest problem in all of this is the KHSAA's unwillingness to aggressively investigate ALL complaints. They have brought this upon themselves and will pay the price. Had they seen it was in their best interest to investigate every reasonable complaint of improper contact, we would not be at this point. With all the headaches this decision will bring their way, I bet they will reget not be more proactive in preventing this.

Shaughnessy, a St. X graduate I believe, should stick to more urgent political matters. His bias is obvious.
