  1. How much does Mercer County return compared to how much GRC returns. Obviously from his previous stops Cook can get it done. Tremendously impressive resume. Should be interesting. Cook definitely sounds like one of if not the top rising young coach in the state of Ky. I'll now go back & watch all of MC's games from the sweet sixteen.

  2. It is amazing to me that Indiana still has that type of rule. There have also been years including this upcoming one with New Albany that teams from there would be invited to the huge Christmas tourneys such as the City of Palms in Fort Myers Fl, where Ballard, Trinity, Scott County among others have played in or even won. Such a shame. This field is amazing though. Looks like the best of the best in Ky. I know 2 of the out of state teams (Allatoona & Lee) will represent themselves very well. I imagine the other 2 will as well.

  3. The Derrick Smith shootout ended around 5 or so years ago

Actually I know it was played as recently as last summer as Floyd Central became only the 2nd Indiana team to win it beating Louisville Manual in the finals. It has gone way down recently for sure. 3 of the final 4 last year were from Indiana. (Floyd, Providence, & Christian Academy). I think it was 3 years ago the finals were shown online and Trinity defeated Ballard in a great game!

  4. Not sure where you got your numbers and I am not being negative about Hop or their defense but JO Johnson is averaging 71.7 for the year for far so they actually held them to 3 points below their avg. Again not taking away from their performance at all, and them only having the footballers back for this little time says a great deal about how good they are and even better how good they are going to be.

  5. I saw Trinity play in the COP in Ft Myers and after hearing all of the hoopla about how many D1 guys they had etc... I felt like Coach Szabo did a great job keeping them in games against those extremely talented teams as Trinity was no where near as talented as those teams. I know they were talented comparitively in Ky. but those were games to me Spalding should have really took over but that didn't happen. I am glad UL got him as I am a huge Pitino fan and his ceiling is very high but like many who star in AAU they take longer against hs and obviously college competition to flourish where there is better defense and much more game planning to slow the oppositions best player or players. After watching Ballard online around Christmas I wasn't at all suprised that they ended up in the sweet 16 as they were MUCH more athletic than Trinity and outside of Spalding at least as talented if not more talented. Just my 2 cents.

  6. Thought Ballard would win it all this year after watching them online a few games. They were extremely tough! Just goes to show it only takes one bad game to cost you the title, especially if you are dependent on 3 point shooting which they were because they had to be. Not being at all negative about the 3 point shooting, that was their strength and something they had to do to be successful in my opinion. Looking forward to watching them this year and hopefully even this summer. Is the Derek Smith going to be online this summer like it was summer before last???

  7. Male is a traditional school. Basically a free private school. On paper you have to come from one of three traditional middle schools. Male fills up fast with traditional kids. Recently they have not allowed many slots for non traditional kids/athletes. In the past they were. I understand Football does and basketball has recently. They have heavy invlovement with parents and boosters. Challenging school to coach at in basketball. Expectations are state titles. A big problem is they have to keep their traditional kids. Traditional middle school kids are not locked in to Male or Butler and can choose any school they want. Three solid traditional middle schoolers are at Fern Creek this year. Coach Feldhaus is coming into a different world. Kids can go anywhere they want basically. They are influenced by a lot of people including aau coaches. If he just sits in his office and takes the kids who show up he will struggle to compete with Ballard/Trinity in that region. He will have to be visible and protect his kids or they will go elsewhere. Good luck to coach Feldhaus

Probably more than you want to know, but:

Male High School was first opened in 1856. It moved to its downtown location on Brook Street in 1915. As its name suggests, it was the Jefferson County public high school for boys (there also was a Girls High School). A lot of prominent Louisvillians attended Male, including US Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis and author Hunter S. Thompson. I am not sure when it became co-educational.

Male moved to its current location in 1991. It currently has an enrollment of around 1750, which makes it the third largest high school in the Seventh Region (Ballard has around 2000, Manual around 1875). Plus, you have St. X (1400) and Trinity (1300) who technically are smaller, but are all male. As dawgs83 suggests, it is in kind of a tough spot to be competitive in sports.

Very good point about needing to be visible and protecting your players. Unfortunately it is getting that way almost everywhere which is sad but true. Also per the 2nd quote, St. X & Trinity are actually basically equivalent to having a student population of 2800 and 2600. Interesting stuff. Good luck to Coach Feldhaus at Male.

  8. They have to buy in to how Biggs' practices(running, running and then some more running), new style of play, learning the playbooks, making the grades in class, etc. As have said in other threads, all schools have kids walking the halls that are All Stars at Lewisburg, YMCA,Germantown, etc. You have to commit to the above things for any Coach

Running just to run or in drills? Just wondering. Always like to compare coaching styles of successful coaches.

  9. Yes Goodin to Butler is the rumor. I think with him or the right choice Butler is the best job. Not just limited to traditional kids

Outside looking in I thought the Butler job was the best open right now. Goodin will do well. Butler is the job I would have went after if I had wanted to leave Florida, not that I could have gotten it, just saying it looked attractive to me. Where is Goodin leaving? College job right? Asst job? Thanks for being informative dawgs83

  10. Rumors is that Goodin turned Male down for Butler, Bibby couldnt take it this year, and now they trying to convince Renner. Havent heard anything on J-Town. Willie Feldhaus name also keeps coming up with Male

Do I read this correctly that insinuates Goodin is going to Butler??? Which of these 3 are the best job in anyone's humble opinion???

  11. He was selected as the 7th region coach of the year this season (With Renner probably doing his best coaching job this season). That puts him in that category to me. He had one dominant player, but used the role players and pieced his team together as good as he could have. Outside of Sutton, no one on his team stands out as a great player (West is good though, just isn't consistent with his effort) individually, but they've all bought into what Coach Just is teaching and play their roles. Great coach, and great character kids on that team. Should be a good game Thursday.

Thanks for the info. I just knew he had won at I believe it was Iroquois (spelling?), then at Jeffersonville in Indiana I think it was and now at Manual, so he must be very good or really really lucky. I tend to lean towards the very good in that regard.
