This is interesting. To me, it has seemed like the Highlands faithful have been satisfied with a change in the overall physicality in the program (size, strength etc.).

Is your comment directed at this specific game, or the overall position of the program in regards to size and strength?

Highlands is physically bigger and stronger than they have been in many years and not what I was alluding to.

My physicality comment is referring to them being a bit tired or not in tip top game shape. Probably has something to do with the Defense not getting much rest.

Of the two, definitely more not being mentally conditioned.

  2. Highlands should not have lost this game this past Friday imo. If you watched it in person, anyone that knows anything about football knows this.

Unforced mistakes by the other team was the difference. Highlands self implosion was a direct result of not being fully prepared both physically and mentally.

On the other hand, CovCath was prepared and did a great job capitalizing on Highlands mistakes, very good programs do this and I do give them the Win in this category.

In my opinion, this lost will be the wake up call and I believe you will see a different team the rest of the season and Bob will do his best and give the program the best opportunity to win.

    Go Birds!!!

I heard Lorenzen was a beast in this game! I know of one play he had a guy on his back and still got away a pass to Abner in the end zone. Person said it was like watching Jared back in the day when he had guys hanging on him and still was able to throw the ball. Sounded like some good football this morning in Park Hills!

Lorenzen looks and carries himself exactly the way I remember Jared.

This young man may or may not know this yet but he is going to be the man for the next 2 year Highlands.

  4. Sad to not see Geisler get 20-30 touches and TE Schneider not get a single ball thrown his way. LBs and DBs won’t walk up on you if you use your TE. Use your RB to open up your passing game and vice versa but what do I know.

I don’t have an issue with kids being emotional but the taunting isn’t the Highlands that I remember and when people say it’s everywhere and everyone does it I just think to myself that Highlands isn’t everyone.

CovCath defense made plays and certainly showed resilience when needed and deserved this win.

Just rattling off the big Kentucky rivalries I can think of off the top of my head (and then referencing the KHSAA for the total number of state championships for each team):

    (40) St. X vs. Trinity: 27 Trinity, 13 St. X
    (36) Male vs. Trinity: 8 Male, 27 Trinity
    (31) Cov Cath vs. Highlands: 23 Highlands, 8 Cov Cath
    (24) Cov Cath vs. Beechwood: 8 Cov Cath, 16 Beechwood
    (21) Beechwood vs. New Cath: 16 Beechwood, 5 New Cath
    (21) Danville vs. Boyle County: Danville 11, Boyle County 10
    (16) St. X vs. Flaget: 13 St. X, 3 Flaget
    (15) Mayfield vs. Paducah-Tilghman: 12 Mayfield, 3 Paducah
    (10) Male vs. Manual: 8 Male, 2 Manual
    (7) Pikeville vs. Painstville: Pikeville 6, Paintsville 1
    (5) Bardstown vs. Elizabethtown: 4 Bardstown, Elizabethtown 1
    (5) New Cath vs. Newport: 5 New Cath, 0 Newport
    (3) Ashland vs. Raceland: Ashland 3, Raceland 0
    (3) Dayton vs. Bellevue: Dayton 1, Bellevue 2
    (3) Scott County vs. Frederick Douglass: Scott County 2, Frederick Douglass 1
    (2) Owensboro vs. Owensboro Catholic: Owensboro 2, Owensboro Catholic 0

There’s some meat right there… thx CWB.

Seems there is some interest in this game.

This thread at 6:00 pm on Friday: 12.6k views and and 182 replies. Next highest is LCA vs. Boyle Co.: 6.7k views and 92 replies.

Probably because the winner of this matchup has won more state championships depending on the outcome than perhaps any other rivalry in the State. @Colonels_Wear_Bluecould shed some knowledge on this.

I know being in different classes changes things but at Highlands this is how you get ready for the rest of the best.

Last night was for a single season. He is approaching the career record. I thought I heard last night that he needs 3 more for the career record but that could be wrong.

This is an awesome achievement for this young man and is well deserved through some very hard work and quite frankly I hope he reaches this milestone.

However… imo this type of stat is not a good thing for an offense. Tells me, Highlands needs to work harder and get better in the Go Zone and stop relying on the 3 pts.

When an opposing defense is really good then I get it, you take the 3 pts and move on, game may come down to a FG to win it and I really like Highlands chances in a close game with the kicking game Burleigh.

To be perfectly honest, the young man probably should already have the record, way too many 1st down turnovers in Go Zone.

Birds are getting better every week and the Koolaide is getting a shade darker Blue every week.

You have Cov Cath offensive series mixed up. There were no false starts on the series where Cov Cath ended up giving up a safety...Cov Cath intercepted Benke on the 2 yard line with 7:21 left in the 4Q while the score was 21-17 Colonels. Then after gaining 3 yards on dive plays, Pitzer was sacked on 3rd down for the safety.

Noon ran back the subsequent kickoff, and the Birds kicked off back to the Colonels. Cov Cath started 1st and 10 on their own 14 yard line, and Leen got a first down on a screen to start Cov Cath 1st and 10 on their own 27. The two straight false starts took place in that series when the Colonels had it on 3rd and 6 on their own 31.

Well shoot you are right, it sounded good though. It appears that I  am having a who’s on first kinda of moment…

Is someone able to post this video of a hit, so others can see what type of hit it was. Since there seems to be some debate about it.

I don’t know how to do the copy paste thingy but I did see the hit. It was an awkward collision with contact from both sides, it appeared to have evidence of a high low hit.  Actually one from the front and the other from an back angle.

Hope the young man is ok, unfortunately still the risks of the game whether illegal hit or not. Vicious and dangerous sport with lots of uncontrollable testosterone flowing…

Thank you for posting that! The high school rule used to be different and did not allow for an intentional throw away by the QB even when outside the tackle box. There had to be an intended WR in the area or it was grounding. Do you know when they changed that rule for high school?

I think everyone is forgetting what put CovCath in this position in the first place. Back to back false starts put this scenario into full swing… no pun intended.

Just making sure facts were actually presented here. Since some may have actually believed you that Highlands hadn’t beat CovCath since Dale.

Plus I’m interested in who beat CovCath in 2015 twice, since Beau wasn’t on that team. Since you obviously don’t want to get the previous coach credit for that either.

Could give a rats tail who coached Highlands in 2015 unless they won a State Championship…

You do know the story behind Tubby Smith right?

Wow that’s impressive that Highlands won a state title in 2014 and made state semi finals in 2015 without even having someone coach the team. The know it all fans from the stands must have had some great game plans and made some good calls that year.

Plus really impressive that Beau Hoge was able to still play and beat the Blueboys in those two years. Especially in 2015, since he would have been at BYU that year and already graduated. I’m surprised CovCath didn’t petition that game then if Beau Hoge beat them, since Highlands would have been using a player that had graduated and was enrolled in college at BYU.  Very impressive on his part to travel back and forth from college to high school to pull that off.

You are proving my point. Unqualified leadership saved by Tubbys team.

    Does it really matter?

    Correct.

2014 - Highlands (Weinrich) beats Cov Cath (Wirth) 47-7
2014* - Highlands (Weinrich) beats Cov Cath (Wirth) 37-34
2015 - Highlands (Weinrich) beats Cov Cath (Eviston) 14-10
2015* - Highlands (Weinrich) beats Cov Cath (Eviston) 44-22

    * Playoffs

Ahhhh, had that one locked and loaded, didn't ya, Sweep 😂

Great game tonight for both teams. Glad to see obviously a Highlands win.

Scratched my head when Eddie got lock jaw right after CovCath  shoved it down Highlands throat.

The back to back penalties and then the safety exposed a conservative approach with the game on the line
