  1. I'm not sure if Somerset will/can win tonight. However, one number keeps jumping out at me--311. As in passing yards that Raceland put up next week. I know Raceland had a fine team this year but I don't think they have 2 players as good as Deaton and Cole. Somerset made a very good Harlan defense look pedestrian and simply dissected a Hazard defense that had held what was supposed to be "the best team in the mountains" in Pikeville to 14 points. If you want to look at things objectively, NCC lost to Belfrey in a squeeker. Belfrey barely beat Pikeville. Somerset beat a Hazard team that defeated Pikeville on its home field by a comperable score to what Pikeville defeated Hazard earlier. One would be short-sighted to think that Somerset couldn't play NCC close based on these scores. Deaton is quicker to run when pressed this year and in spite of the score last year, Somerset gave the Breds some trouble especially when he scrambled. They just failed to finish off drives. I can't really decide on a score but I just don't see this one being a blow out.

That Belfry game was the first game of the season with a brand new QB. I am sure NCC is better now than they were on the first game of the season. I think NCC will be to much for somerset. I am going with last years score NCC 35 Somerset 10.

  2. It was game 1, but here is my take:

Harris is an GOOD passer, but that kid simply does not like contact!

I have not seen Somerset, but if he can consistenly commit 6 guys to rushing the passer and actually get a solid push, the game will be interesting.

On the other hand, if Harris has time, he will destroy his opposition.

Somerset needs to be VERY efficient on offense and SCORE. On defense, Somerset needs (regardless of what they usually do) pressure, pressure, pressure Harris. The Jumpers need to HIT Harris every time they can.

I think NCC is playing well and has a very good front

    NCC 34

    Somerset 21

If they do that, Then I see NCC's backfield Burks and Vicars having very big nights.

  3. News from the-The Independent

    http://www.dailyindependent.com/localsports/local_story_320235856.html

Raceland’s J.T. Forrest (51) and Caleb Caldwell tackle East Carter quarterback Nathan Carroll during their game earlier this season in Grayson. The Rams take on Newport Central Catholic tonight

Forrest has it right, Raceland will have to stop the run. Vicars has 1500 yards rushing and he is not that easy to bring down.

  4. The key to the HC victory over NCC was there ability to stop Vicars. If Dayton can do that they will have the same shot at turnovers as HC, but if NCC can establish the run look for the pass attempts to be down and fewer shots at turnovers. NCC's defense is very good Dayton needs a couple of short fields to have a chance.

    Good luck to both

The key to HC's victory was NCC,s mistakes. If NCC stops the mistakes they are one of the teams to beat.It will come down to NCC and Beechwood again.

  5. You are correct in that NCC will not go far in the playoffs without a passing game. But there are ways to develop a passing game without being in a shotgun formation with four wide receivers basically the entire game.

The paper today said Holy Cross only completed one pass in the second half. But it was a 40 yard TD pass. Meanwhile NCC is completing a lot of passes but was also throwing 4 INTs, having bad snaps, getting sacked. Which passing game was more effective? I'd say the one that didn't turn the ball over and put points on the board.

You might of misunderstood my quote.I am in total agreement with you.I think they should line up under center every play and run their offence from there.Play action fakes are so effective, and they are a big weapon that is taken away from us in our current offence. We also have a huge problem with dropped passes. So why not line up under center take some of the pressure off of our Offence and run the ball get a lead, then stay under center and complete a pass here and there by play action faking.(IMO) That is the way Beechwood has had our number over the years. That is a better all around Offence then what we use.

  6. NCC lined up under center the very first drive from center. They had the fullback in and scored in three plays from they 21 yard line. Then the rest of the game they were in that stupid shotgun.Maybe 5 plays the rest of the game they brought the fullback back in.I believe they are trying to get the kids better in the passing game instead of doing what works.I guess they feel without a passing game they wont go far in the playoffs. It should have been 21 to 3 at the half, but these turnovers inside the 10 yardline are killing us.Just like the Ryle game 3 or 4 turnoves inside the 10.And someone else already said it,the play calling is Horrible as with formation calling. This has costed us 3 wins this year.

  7. ALL 28 of CCH's 1st-half points were by the offense. They turned it down a notch in the 2nd.

Nope, your wrong on this one. They returned atleast one punt for a TD in the first half (I thought it was 2 punts but the wife says it was one) and the opening kickoff in the second half. That was there last score. They almost had another one but the Breds had a nice goal line stand. So the CC offence scored 21 points, which I think is pretty good For NCC against a strong CC team.

  8. I realy am not sure what NCC team you have been watching, the one that I seen play is nothing like that. If anyone is close on there guess it would it would be btownguy. Or maybe we forgot they 1-3, and HC is 3-1. I think i will just sit back and wait for BIGZ to blast on me.

I guess you forgot to look at who HC played and who NCC played. If NCC had there schedule they would be 4-0.

  9. That's actually a good point. They are averaging what...16 pts or so per game? I haven't been able to see them play yet, what's the deal? Do they not have receivers, is Harris still too rusty, is the line not what it was cracked up to be? For as much experience as they had coming back you'd figure that you'd be able to run the ball consistently and not have to pass as much as last year.

The one thing they are doing is running the ball. 183 yards against Ryle and 175 against Newport and 93 yards against a very tough CovCath team. The problem (IMO) is they haven't been able to balance the passing to take some pressure off opf the run.Right now the D follows Vicars on his first step everywhere.

6 turnovers in the Ryle game lost it.Without those turnovers NCC wins.2 were in the red zone one in the endzone. They played a very good CovCath team and did not allow a point in the second half to the Offence. Not saying they would beat CovCath but special teams killed them in that one. They played a 110% better game last week and made great improvements. They are going to be tough to beat in 1A.

  10. NCC never quit.I believe that was one of the best games they played this year.Special teams did kill us.They had field position all night. They also ran back a punt and the opening kick off.Our Defence did not let them score in the second half.We still have some things to work out but nothing to be a shame of last night.

  11. After watching Dixie play Saturday afternoon I came away impressed. They (The Lil Colonels) need to start believing in themselves, as you could see the longer they stayed in the game the better they got. The Lil Colonels will beat Boone, Conner, Scott, and Holmes and should beat CC and SK, but Ryle, well they will really need to play their best game of the season and even then, I am not so sure.

BTW, what is really a shame is the crowd that Dixie brought with them.... It is indeed sad when a school is so large and yet so close to CovCath (that you could almost call it a home game).......but yet so small....

Good luck Lil Colonels, and the game against Ryle should be a good one...

I believe they will beat Ryle.NCC would have beat Ryle if wasn't for the six turnovers.I believe 4a will come down to CC and Dixie.Ryle will fight for third with SK.

  12. So, 26-0 near the end of the third quarter is a close game? NC scored their last TD after a fumble by Ryle's backup running back. NC will have a good year but Ryle would absolutely throttle them when our QB returns. NC did not have to defend the pass and still gave up 5 TDs. Ryle returned a pick to the 1 and a questionable clip call brought it back 70 yards.

Untill the defence was flat exhausted Ryle did not move the ball.Say what you want, but the D needed rest and could not get it.Like I said though Ryle's D played great and there O played mistake free and they wore us down. They deserve the win and clearly won.NCC will fix these problems and be fine.

  13. Congrats to the raiders, but to say the game was not close is wrong.6 to 0 at the half.the Breds played sloppy,6 turnovers and 3 of them in the redzone. They will get it together though by the playoffs. It is a long season.A few less dropped passes and turnovers and it is a different game. Our defence played there butts off and has to be dead tired. They were on the field tonight forever.

  14. It's Tuesday night. The regular season has begun. Will coach Sneider still permit the players to hang out at the bar(BW3) late on a school night? I would think since the season is underway and with a tough game this week that NCC will just be home early this week.

They are up there right now, along with some CC kids and Bellevue kids and HHS kids.Heck all of NKY is getting drunk.
