  1. L/N,

I hope your right but I have to agree with UCRN, it wouldn't hurt to have the centers working on snaps as well. This has been a problem over the years and I personnally don't understand why they don't take the opportunity during the 7 on 7's to work on this. The center has the snap to worry about and getting to his block at the same time, it may seem simple but I don't think you can ever practice it enough.

  2. Buckler and Johnson both looked very good. Thanks for the compliments about the O line. They did create some very nice running lanes that often times allowed the East RBs to get 5-10 yards down field before they were touched.

You are correct about the simple offenses. Don't know about the West, but the East's playbook was on one page. Like seeing Zach Deaton call the counter. Man, I love that play.

I was really surprised that the West couldn't run the ball better than they did, particularly between the tackles. Other than one nice run by Simpson (during which he broke several tackles after he was stopped at the line of scrimmage) and some nice runs out of the QB position, the East D kept them throttled through the first 3 quarters. I missed the 4th quarter as I had to run an errand to Fed Ex for Henry (technically for my youngest son). The kids from Holmes on defense all played a very good game.

I was on the field after the game and enjoyed seeing all the smiles from the players and seeing the friendly inter-action between the players on both teams. Just a great way for the kids to end their high school football careers.

Big thanks to the organizers of the event, the coaches and the refs for volunteering their time. Well done!

I agree, but would like to mention Schlosser on the o-line the kid just dominated whoever he went against all night. Centre is lucky to get this young man!!! Welz also had a good night playing tight end. And as you mentioned Buckler and Johnson looked good at running back.

On the defensive side of the ball Lowe from Holmes had a heck of a game and Jake Smith came alive after he was called for a horsecollar on number 30 who jumped in his face after the tackle. I hope number 30 is OK because I know Jake didn't try bring him down this way he had to dive to make the tackle and it just happened. Jake and Mark Snyder made a great tackle towards the end of the fourth quarter that stopped the West from getting a first down. Big play that could have changed the outcome of the game.

I thought Rigdon did a fine job considering the lack of practice time the teams had and Simpson had a beautiful run but unfortunately took himself out of the game after this play (out of football shape like everyone or most of everyone else). This is one of the reasons why I don't like the timing this game. Boden and Walker also stood out to me as being very good players.

All in all a good game and one of the best all-star games I have seen in some time. I'm also happy everyone came out of this game without any major injuries.

  3. VOR, very well put, I agree with you and can't stand it when people take shots at the young athletes that are trying their best!!!

To add to my short response... i also feel we put too much pressure on some of the players by predicting they are the best junior QB before the young man has even started one varsity game. Not to take anything away from Pike but right now I think anyone who knows anything about the game would have to give Towles the edge at this time. The young man proved himself last year when many thought Highlands was in trouble after Bardo was injured. I wish both QB's a successful season!!!

  4. I agree that he needs to mature. I am not necessarily protective of him. I just am trying to keep some balance. I think many kids make mistakes when they are young. I do think Pike has brought a lot of the hater attitude on himself but I also think people are very quick to attack him. I don't really know him but I cringe when I hear how many people talk about him and seem to target him. I don't think any kid who has done nothing wrong other than being overly competitive and immature deserves to be attacked like he is. That is why I defend a lot of these guys who get targeted - Elliott is another player who gets unfair rumors and is targeted. Pittman I think got hated on more than he deserved. Maybe I am a little too easy on these guys but I just see them as young kids trying to grow up while many of those around them don't look at them as young athletes and expect more than they can give at a young age.

VOR, very well put, I agree with you and can't stand it when people take shots at the young athletes that are trying their best!!!

  5. First of all they play for a lower level because they are not "good enough" to get playing time on a D1 team. If they were "good enough" they would play over the person in front of them.

I said I am talking from only an athletics standpoint. I understand that you have to have grades to play and what not, but honestly it doesn't matter to me how the players do in the classroom as long as they are eligible. Again strictly an athletics standpoint.

30 years ago schools were able to give out more scholarships. Today schools can't afford to give out scholarships to sub par players. You could go with a case by case basis on a lot of things but look at the percentages, the players that are "good enough" to play D1, play D1. There will always be a few exceptions but in general the "good enough "talent for D1 is in D1.

I understand what you are saying but I don't agree with you. Maybe part of the problem with society, college ball and professional ball is there are to many kids or adults that don't care about academics or doing what is morally right. Thank God for sports for without sports some of the players would never get through college or be playing in the pro's.

My statement is not fair to the players that are good role models for our kids but lets face it a coaches job is to win and there are a lot of them that feel the same way you do when it comes to the classroom. For that matter you have owners like Mike Brown who is looking for the best deal instead of the best interest of the team!!!

I know this is way off line for the subject but true. I personnally would want my son in a good academic program surrounded by coaches that care about his future than him having the opportunity to play D1.

  6. I know two seniors on the same team that had D1 offers. They recieved offers from the Airforce Acadamy and one also had an offer by Army .Both had injuries , one his junior year and the other his senior year. I believe their injuries had a major impact on which major D1 schools would offer them. Believe me these players are not afraid of anything , including competition. Heck , they have been competing in football since grade school. As far as not accepting the D1 offers , hopefully one or both of these great athletes will end up on a major D1 college campus down the road , and if they don't , we are extremely proud of them regardless. As per your bolded statement , thats bologny

    Hoosierbirdfan,

You are correct and for someone to make a statement that a player picks another school or level of Division due to being afraid is ludicrous!!! Education does play a part for some of the athletes!!!

  7. Man, any coach or teacher that has been at this long should get a pat on the back.

In all seriousness, congrats to this man on a incredible career. No hard feelings on giving my daughter a C in his English test even though she aced the english portion of the ACT exam. Must have had something to do with the typewriter he lost in the spelling bee competition back in the late 50's.

He deserves all the recognition he is receiving... I had a B in his class and didn't come close to your daughters ACT scores!!!:notworthy:

  8. I think Neil could have played at the DII or NAIA level if he wanted. He has the size and speed. He went unnoticed many times last year because he did such a good job in coverage that teams didn't throw his way. How many games did Buten not catch a pass? Not that Highlands needed to throw very much against CovCath, but Neil did a very nice job in coverage on Buten.

Chris Garnick in my opinion is the emodiment of what a High School football player should be. He played every play 110%, cared very little about personnel recognition and was a great leader for his team. Great student, who represented CovCath on and off the field in manner any coach would be proud of. Pound for pound you won't find many better hitters than Mr. Garnick. He is worth the price of admission to the all star game to see him play one more time!

He could have played at D3 or NAIA if he chose. However, he has chosen to pursue his engineering degree at UK.

I'm sure his parents are very proud of him and they should be, a nice young man!!!

  9. Yes, great players fall through the cracks. He might not have got noticed by D1 schools at all... or they might have saw him and thought he wasnt good enough. Either way, the facts are that D1 is the best of the best and % wise sends the most players to the NFL by a long shot.

The fact is that D1 is the best of the best and % wise send most players to the NFL ... The fact is also that D1 coaches miss out on talented players that slip through the cracks and still make it to the NFL. The fact is we will never know what is good enough until the players career is over!!!

  10. A college commitment does not exclude a player from All-Star game competition. Many of them actually take the last opportunity to play HS football. I could see everyone but AC, Simpson, and Nichols playing in this one. IMO, the West could have an advantage with West...:D Sorry for the pun but I don't think the Highlands laden defense will be good enough to stop Nick "West" offense.

Highlands defense would do just fine against West...they see good QB's everyday in practice!!!

  11. Great post! I have a son this year who had D1 And D2 offer's. He chose Georgetown (NAIA) because he liked the coaches and the campus. He also liked the opportunity to maybe see the playing field as a freshmen. The idea of telling people he played D1 later in life wasn't a priorty. He just wanted to play football instead of maybe just getting to play as a jr. or sr. if he played D1. Who know's he may never have seen the field if he went D1. I'm still proud of him no matter where he had gone!

I have a similar situation with my son... He had several offers from other schools but once he stepped on the University of Dayton's campus and met the players, coaches and Dean of Engineering he knew it was the right school for him.

Football can only last so long and take you so far in life, at UD you are a student first and football player second!!!

  12. If you would ask Will, Pat or the others probably none would view it that way. All the Birds' players take "ownership" of the TEAM. :D

As a QB, Pat should be at the top from KY, not just NKY.

Looking forward to another fine season... 20n10.

There is no I in team...I hope we don't over hype this young man so much that he feels he has to do too much instead of what is asked of him. Dale will control the game and the seniors will supply the leadership. Patrick will be the QB but let the kid enjoy his next two years without putting too much on his shoulders!!!

  13. LOL,I watch football all over the state and as an ex coach and parent of grown children I find it very amusing on the negative comments on some of these kids. Not only in this thread but others I have commented on,I think 99% come from parents of other players on the team or team mates. In the spirit of sportsmanship lets let these kids enjoy the noteriaty they recieve here and go by the old saying "you dont build yourself up by tearing other people down" I have herd nothing but positive comments on this Hemple kid on and off the field.Character and personality goes a long way with the recruitment of these kids lets not forget that. Dixie Darling I got your sarcasm!

Billyblane, I couldn't agree with you more about the negative comments that are not neccessary but I guess everyone has an opinion. I also believe Dixie Darling was making more of a clarification on when a player can accept a written scholarship offer versus being negative toward the player mentioned.

  14. I'd reverse Kremer and Towles, but I agree this is the top four and that Lawrence is #1. I think Kremer is right there though. Then a dropoff to both Towles and Hempel.

I disagree, I feel Hempel and Towles have the best upside of the four players mentioned. If you want to talk about stats Lawrence and Kremer will probable be in the top of the stats catagory but that doesn't make them the best QB's in NKY. There is more involved with being the best Qb in NKY other than stats alone.
