  1. Also watched the tape last night. Fritsche (sp?), Deglow and Garnick played very nice games for CovCath's D. Garnick really impressed me, particularly on one play on Highlands first offensive drive. On the Collinsworth run of about 30 yds that about 5 CovCath players missed him, Garnick was the first to miss him. Garnick got back up off the ground, hustled down field, and after Collinsworth broke several other tackles, Garnick made the touchdown saving tackle. That was just great effort by the young man. End up keeping 7 points off the board as just a couple of plays later, Highlands turned over the ball.

I haven't been able to review the tape but if Garnick is not in the game Highlands scores a few more TD's. I'll bet he had to be the leading tackler for CCH and it's not a good sign when your safety is making most of the tackles.

That was the most impressive game I've seen him ever play. He entered into the game sick but sucked it up. Any one who has seen him play could tell on the fumble return by Timmerman that Austin just wasn't at any where near full speed. But he insisted on playing inspite of being sick. Then after his injury, he kept going back in. Finally the coaching staff refused to let him play any further. Just a gutsy, gutsy performance by the young man. Congrats Austin for the award and more importantly for the performance and leadership displayed on Saturday. :thumb:

  3. I agree. I think Austin has stepped up and improved every game. I'm very happy to see he looks like he's having fun playing the game. His pass defense today was excellent. I gotta give Tyler Fennell some credit today at running back. He hasn't been getting many carries over the past few weeks, but today when he was needed he really stepped up. I also have to give Hunter Schlosser credit today. He has several blocks today that were devastating. On defense I thought Roller and Dierig had typical solid games that's become expected of them. Nice game Birds!

  4. My comments should not be inferred as a slight to Towles. Sorry if it looked that way in my earlier post. I was just trying to make my point. My comments are about one thing - I don't think Highlands' receivers get the credit they deserve.

O.K., I'll give Buten, Drennen, Gold and Welz the credit they deserve for being Highlands receivers that help make the big plays!!!:thumb:

  5. My point is just as I said - for all the praise given for the Birds passing game I don't hear much about your receivers. In fact, I would guess there are very few people on here that aren't HHS fans who can name one Highlands receiver. I would further venture a guess that one third of the Bluebird passing yardage this year can be attributed to the HHS QB steps back, throws the ball up in a high arc about 40 yards down field and trusts one of the receivers to get the ball - and they do. The fact that Towles has stepped in so easily and produced is further testimony to the receivers as much if not more than Towles. In fact, I would say if Towles went down (God forbid, not wishing ill will on anyone) then New or McCoy would step in and the Highlands passing game would march right on. That is because of the great receivers and the line giving the QB plenty of time to throw.

And by the way, I think this is only the thrid time I have made the comment so I don't think I am saying it over and over.

Not only the third time if it is I'm mistaken. My point is there is more to the QB than throwing the ball high in the air and the reciever coming down with the ball. I agree the line is very good and the recievers are very good but don't think anyone can step in and be productive. I'm not taking anything away from New or McCoy either... If you think this is easy to complete why don't more teams throw the long ball...because it's not a high percentage pass to complete!!!

  6. You will say Bardo just because he has better receivers to throw to. Conner's receivers are inconsistant catching the ball. If you gave both respective quaterbacks the same receivers, you would see that West puts the ball on the money 9 times out of 10 and he has a lightning fast release. He is also mobile. Mr West is also more valuable to his team. Conner with out West would not be that great but might be able to manage with their decent running game.

I mentioned that I don't want to take anything away from West because West is a good QB, however my choice would be Bardo. By the way receivers are going to miss balls thrown to them unfortunately that happens. I do agree with you Bardo has very good receivers but even good receivers drop the ball some times. A good receiver can help the QB as much as a good QB can make the receiver look good. It's a team sport not and individual sport and stats are not the most important part of the game. By the way without a good line the QB and receivers are not very effective and Highlands has a very good line as well with Schlosser, Grubbs, Combs, Hahn, Meyers and Welz!!!

  7. Conner's QB Nick West is the #1 QB in N. Ky. and one of the top 5 QB's in the state. I would rank Conner above CCH as well.

Injured or not I'll take Bardo over West. The game plan on holding him back for the St.X game worked as planned. Compare the schedules of Highlands and Conner, Highlands has played a tougher schedule. I not taking anything away from West but as the best in Nky. I beg to differ!!! I agree with Highlands as the best team in the State of Kentucky.

  8. Congrats to Highlands for the win over Dixie!!! Towles started out the game the way I thought he would with it being his first Varsity start. Once he settled down he did a fine job and got better as the game went on. I always thought Patrick would make a good QB but more importantly he is a fine young man!!! Good job Birds keep it up, one game at a time!!!

  9. Coach Lewis was a great coach and a better person. My senior year we were rated the number 1 team in Kentucky and he came to Newport stadium to play a practice game against NC. Wyoming was rated #1 pre-season in their division that year. They spanked us by three touchdowns or so. I believe Wyoming went undeated that year and didn't make the play-offs, if my memory serves me right Moeller went to state that year.

For a coach to leave a successful program and go to Conner was a surprise to me. He turned that program around and showed just how good of a coach he was. My prayers go out to his family!!!

  10. Some places are easier to win titles at than others. Give me a coach that took a poor program and turned it around. Chuck Smith, Hilton, Holcomb, A coach that stays at Highlands, T, X, Danville, is going to get one.

One may be right but not several if he isn't a good coach. Your comment leads me to believe that you think it is easier to coach at Highlands, T,X, or Danville which may be right in the beginning of a coaches career however; if your not successful early in the mentioned coaching positions you won't be around long. Lets not forget that the programs mentioned (Highlands, X and T not sure about Danville) play tougher schedules than most teams in Kentucky.

  11. Great game. Highlands Frosh are looking very good. I was particularly impressed with the line play tonight.:D

I agree, anytime I see a lineman running down field to block for the QB on a long TD run its a good site. Tyler Robinson #75 was stride for stride with the QB McCoy all the way down the field and made the final block before McCoy scored. A beautiful run by McCoy as well.:dancingpa

  12. But then again, you have to look at how fortunate Highlands was to escape 16-8 over a currently unranked 6A Manual team. That game took some of the wind out of the Highlans sails. Its a double-edged sword that goes week to week. :D

I look at it like how fortunate Manual was to only lose 19-8. The score could of been much worst in my oppinion.

  13. Very much agree with Loke man. And, I look for the Raiders to improve drastically in play calling as they showed they can both run and throw the ball against a VERY good team. It just needs to be mixed up throughout the game and not run-1st half and pass only when behind. I came away from the game Friday night impressed with the Raiders' heart and potential this year. Lots of positives any time you rack up 350 yards and 25 first downs against a team as good as Highlands. And, I totally agree about Logan Carney. Very good player and tuff kid. One last point alluded to in this thread about Travis Elliott. Great player and great young man who will continue to mature each week. May every kid that suits up strive to play with the heart of a lion like he plays with.

I agree and this is coming from a Highlands fan. I saw the coach talking to Elliott when he would come out of the game and I know he will continue to work on controlling his emotions and letting them out at the right times throughout the game.

Conner has always impressed me as a good QB and one tough kid as we witnessed on a late game INT (what a hit he delivered). It was obvious that Conner wanted that pass back but how many times do you see this happening late in a game because the QB is trying to score and the D is dropping back in coverage. All and all this game is only going to help both teams progress as the season continues.
