  1. Although the Birds had issues with getting the ball in the hole, they stilled played a decent defensive game. They gave it their all and kept it 'interesting' for about 3 periods. It wasn't exactly a pretty game, especially with so many missed open layups, sometimes unnecessarily rushed. I wish Willie would have played the tall blonde kid more than the last minute of the game. In his one minute he impressed me more than the first 31 minutes of shabby post play by the Birds. What kept the Birds alive is that the Dawgs weren't exactly burning up the nets either. They had their moments of flash with some sweet dunks by Rice and Henderson. They kept decently paced so as to not squander the small lead that they held most of the game. A better shooting team, such as CovCath' would've went home the winner tonight by a similar margin as the Dawgs ended up with over the Birds. Arnold played a pretty good game of cleanup in the early running. Simpson played the first half and his services were badly needed in the 2nd, but I'm assuming that he's still taking it a litte easy because of his injury. He manuvered pretty nicely but I'm sure some of his spin moves taxed him out a little and he needed to hang the shoes up for the night. DJ got some limited minutes tonight and he seemed charged and excited to be back on the floor. He ally-ooped (sp?) Rice for a snazzy momentum changing dunk in the 4th quarter that resulted in a 'T' on Rice for hanging too long, but was the beginning of the end for the Birds. Austin Hill looked like he hurt his back in the 4th. I think he's been riddled by back issues since last year. He put in quality minutes before taking a seat for the night. DJ guarded Simpson in the 1st half which seemed interesting just on the fact alone of how good both are and that both are recovering from injuries. I wish both of them the best of luck and hope that their injuries don't hamper either of their promising futures. It looks like the Bulldogs round out the year with a pretty decent schedule. It will be interesting to see if they can tie up their loose ends and be ready come tournament time for the likes of the Blue Colonels. The Holy Cross game should be very interesting in the Districts, but I think that the Bulldogs have an edge there because of a deeper bench, but if Ryan and Sorrell get hot, who knows, it could be 2 Regional tourneys in a row held at Holmes where the host doesn't get to do much more than serve up food and beverages in the hospitality room. I'm not playing any favorites though. May the best TEAM make the drive to Lexington in March. I'll be rooting for the 9th no matter what.

  2. When he was 'The Man' for Newport as an 8th Grader he already had some serious game face and moves. He was given (or gave himself) free reign to do just about anything that he wanted too and more times than not he had it going on. Maybe somewhat of a ball hog but I'm guessing that time, maturity, and tougher opponents have taken care of that while at Winton Woods, Taft, or in the AAU. The only other time I saw him play was at U.S. Bank Arena and he had a sub-par day but I believe that he still has it. I totally agree with D1. I could almost see the NBA in his face when he was at Newport. Who knows he may surprise us all and end up there if he wants it bad enough. If you got it, take it to the limit. Does anybody know it he still chomps on his gum the cool way that he used to???

  3. Pretty interesting game. The Bulldogs worked their depth tonight. They looked pretty sharp and contolled. DJ got a lot of playing time and made some awesome assists to Rice down low and stroked a nice 3. Rice and Henderson had some sweet dunks and both displayed some nice outside shooting. Hill got some much needed rest tonight but contributed nicely as he always does. I really like Clarks game. He's a big plus in the dawgs arsenal. Nice leaps, sure handed and dependable. Remarkalby, the Colonels would never go away. They played the Dawgs an even 2nd half. Half time score was 32-24, final was 62-54. They kept it interesting by pulling witin 3 early in the 3rd quarter. I think Holmes got the lead to as much as 10 or 12 a couple of times but it teeter-tottered back and forth from 5 to 10 numerous times. Dixie showed alot of guts tonight by never rolling over. They worked the ball well and played scrappy, dive for every ball, play. Hit some nice 3's and outfoxed the Dawgs close to the basket many times. I don't know the players names for Dixie but I think one is 'Andre the Giant'. He's a beast and I'd love to see how he developes as time goes by. The Colonels got it to a 2 possession game at the 1:43 mark, but couldn't quite close the gap. All in all I was impressed by both teams at an interesting time in the season when we're watching closely to see whose hitting their strides and thowing their hat in the ring to claim the 9th. If Dixie is only 8 points behind the Dawgs at this jucture the 9th Region looks pretty close except for CovCath who put Scott away pretty handily tonight. It's getting interesting too with Ryle knocking off Boone. As always this Region keeps everyone scratching their heads right to the end. The Regional at Holmes this year is going to be AWESOME!

  4. I could be wrong and I usually am, but I don't see any teams besides CCH or Holmes winning the 9th Region this year. I have a hunch though that CCH has the edge because they started the season as a TEAM and they've grown as a TEAM. Other than losing Billy Schult they haven't had too many distractions. They've developed a deep bench. They beat Lou. Male. They only lost to Scott Co. by 5 without the services of Todd Jacobs in both games, which can only help their confidence level. They always play 32 solid minutes of ball. They have excellent TEAM chemistry. They have way more experience with state powers than Holmes does. Yeah, the Bulldogs are talented and because of unfortunate actions by a few key players, they've had a chance to develope their bench, but it's to be seen if they've developed any TEAM chemistry or if they've ever learned to play a full game from start to finish. I think it's too late in the season for DJ to ever be 100%. I'm completely impressed by Austin Hill and his new bench puppies but besides him, they're a little too young and inexperienced to be much more than role players this year. The 'Stars' are back but can they keep their egos in check? There are WAY too many 'IF's with the Bulldogs and for my money I've got to go with a 'sure thing' in the COLONELS!!! They've proved in the Toyota Classic at Scott Co. that they can play 3 days in a row against top notch teams and still come away smelling like roses. I also bet that of these 2 teams, that the Colonels will be the only team invited back to an invitational tournament next year.

  5. OK pet peeve of mine....... Up on the Soapbox.....

I just wish people wouldn't say it is a State Tournament. It is the All "A" Classic. It is not even a "A" class State Tournament in the same manner that the Sweet Sixteen is The State Tournament. The All "A" Classice is not any different than the 5th/3rd Classic, or the AIT, or even the Kentucky Preps Plus Classic.... What it is is a very good Tournament that is only played by smaller schools, and not even "A" size or "A" class size, schools. While it is a very good tournament it isn't a State Tournament.......

    Off soap box......

I don't know. Call it what you will, but the way it begins with 16 different regional tournaments and then eventually one tournament with the winner of each respective region playing, with no out of state teams involved, and every team that meets the enrollment max is elligible to be in it, then it sure sounds to me like a 'state tournament' for small schools. It may have begun as some sort of invitational tournament in Northern Kentucky, but it certainly has evolved into something much more than that. Sounds a bit ridiculous to debate the point but it's so much more than just an invitational tournament. It's also a great way to keep the Sweet Sixteen pure without dividing the state into 3 or 4 classes with 3 or 4 different state tournaments, but also give the small or smaller schools an opportunity to compete in a very state tournament like tournament. With your line of thinking, perhaps the Sweet Sixteen Tournament is not really a state tournament either. Maybe it's simply just the 'Sweet Sixteen' and since the 16 teams that are in it are usually not rated 1-16 in the state then perhaps it's not truly a state tournament at all and that it's all just bogus anyway. In the end though, I kind of like to consider both tournaments as 'STATE TOURNAMENTS' and I kind of think that all teams involved do too. Since you are a complete minority in your way of thinking (kudos for individual thinking and I applaud individual thinking) no matter what the official name of it is, if it looks like a bird and it flies like a bird, then it's probably a bird and it's not likely to be a plane or superman. :p

  6. I feel bad for Austin, because it seems like he's the only one who is focused...

You took the words right out of my mouth. I used to be surprised when issues would arise with a talented Bulldog squad year after year (How could a great team not stay focused?), but now I've come to expect it. I guess that some of the present players are too young too fully understand what opportunities and great memories they are jeopardizing. 'Too young' is just part of the problem though because there are many young players around who do not lack this vision. Austin Hill for example. I feel bad for him because you know that he's been working very hard to get back to Rupp ever since he got a taste of it his sophomore year. Well...this gives me more reason to quit being naive. Ignorance used to be blissful...and in my H.S. Basketball dream that bliss will be missed. I always have great hopes for the Bulldogs, but perhaps it's time that I wake up and face reality.

  7. That true leader on and off the court is DJ. I think some of you are failing to realize just how big of an impact he makes. He didn't lead nky in assists the past 2 years for nothing. He is another little piece that helps make them so good.

He can hurt them just as much as he can help them. The last time I saw DJ on the hardwood he provoked a GIANT 'T' call that killed the Dog's chances in the 1st Round of the 9th Region Tournament against Dixie. He has had a great career at Holmes but has had issues with controlling his reactions on the court. Over time, I kind of expected maturity to take care of this problem but it never really has seemed to. Perhaps this, his senior year, he can be a controlled leader that can set good sportsmanship examples to the rest of his squad. Another big question is will his injury hinder his performance? We know that at full strength DJ is a great player, but will he have the strength and stamina to compete against all the well oiled teams later in the season? It takes a bit of time to catch up when you've been sitting out alot of the season and with his injury, who knows? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. That's what makes 9th Region Basketball so exciting. Every year it's always too close to call. It would be pretty anti-climatic if we knew at the beginning of the season how it was all going to go down before it did. But we don't and that's why I dig basketball and the 9th Region so much.

The 'care less' part just might be what the Bulldog's problem is too. Even though regular season games don't matter come tournament time, they do 'grow' a team in the meantime. If they're going to play a game of 'tortoise and the hare' then they may come to find the same end results that they saw last year. All that talent with nary a trophy to show for it. When they went to Rupp as sophomores the future was looking bright for them, but they might've assumed that it was a given that they would 3-peat, but you can't 3-peat if you don't 2-peat first. I've seen alot of teams this year play their hearts out as if it was a tournament game and I've also seen teams improve. They've got to put the work in now if they expect to see great results later in the season. They just can't assume that the 9th Region belongs to them. It's quite apparent that there's about 5 or so other teams who'd like to have something to say about that. If they're saving themselves for tourny time, Holy Cross and CovCath just might nudge them right out of a chance to play in the 9th Region Tournament on their home court. Nothing is ever for certain in the 9th Region. Just look at its history.

  9. If he is somebody better check out the mail man!

I've never known a Pangallo to be issued blonde hair.

I think blonde hair and Pangallo is one of those oxymorons! ;)

He is a blonde.. takes after mom. I know it is different seeing a blonde Pangallo. I am hearing he has his Dad Jimmy's talent as far as ballhandling and playmaking. He will definitely be a special player at NCC.

Well, I thought I might've been wrong to think that the blonde haired kid was a Pangallo. Even thought that I may suffer ridicule by asking. Mustang took care of that, but I'm happy to find that in the end one of us was wrong and it wasn't me. ;):p

  10. Its the same from grade school ball all the way to High school... you win with strong guard play. It doesnt matter how big of a stud you have down low.. if you cannot bring the ball down the floor and feed him he is useless. From what I am reading on BGP, NCC has very weak guards. Bring up the Frosh Pangallo....from what I hear he is a ballhandling wizard and would be good to get his teeth cut this early.

Which one is Pangallo? When I saw the NCC/Highlands game I was thinking how the JV guards seemed like they could be more effective on the varsity squad than what I was seeing from the starting varsity guards. The blonde haired kid - Number 15 is an excellent player. Is he Pangallo? If not, does anyone know what his name is? He'd be playing varsity if I had anything to say about it. I see by the NCC website that he's pictured with the Frosh and JV, but I think he's ready for varsity. Can't wait to see his developement. And no doubt....NCC needs to practice a whole lot on their free throws. It's painful to watch them throw up so many bricks. I agree that guards mean alot but if Zak doesn't come back it'll be a long season for the Breds. I'd hate to see that because I'd like to see NCC throw their hat in the ring too by season's end.

  11. I got there early in the third quarter of the JV game with the Birds up 29-16. The rest of the game was NCC charging back like champs with great team play to tie the score by the end of rugulation and then go on to win it in OT. It really was an excellent game that was way more interesting than the Varsity game. Does anyone know who the blonde haired kid from NCC (I think he was number '15') was who scored the winning points. He sure is a WINNER and I expect to see more greatness from him in the years to come. :thumb:

  12. Apparently, he is off the team of his own volition.

I guess he has his reasons, but I was thinking that this could've been Cahill's coming out year for the Colonels. I always thought that he was under used in the past but thought for certain that he'd get his minutes this year. I'm sorry to hear that he won't be playing. I was thinking that his name would've come up alot this coming season as a much improved player. It might've been a little to crowded last year with the Colonels for him to play much, but I just thought that this season could've been a great year for him.

  13. Just an assumption, obviously I am not Willie and I'm sure he won't be jotting down these thoughts but here goes.

    Highlands

    Nic Simpson Guard 6'2 JR

    Greg McGraw Guard 6'2 JR

    Scott Wise Center 6'6 SR

    Drew Simons- SF 6'2 JR

    Luke Stein- PF 6'3 JR

Bench- Zach Hurtt 6'2 JR , Micheal Eaton 6'2 JR, Stewart 6'2 JR, Dierig 6'7 SR , Josh Conner 5'11 Soph, Zach Lother 5'5 Soph.

Is Eaton really a Junior? If he's who I think he is, it seems like he's been playing forever. I kind of recall him playing in the Highlands/NCH game at NKU when O.J. was a Freshman. If he's only a junior then was he just in the 8th grade during that game? Maybe I'm thinking about the wrong guy. Maybe someone can clear me up about him.

  14. Maybe someone can remember the details a little better than me, but in either 2000 or 2001, Ronnie Dawn put on a shooting clinic at NewCath against ??? during a regular season meaningless game. He might've had 50+ points that night. I kind of recall him ending the first half with a half court shot. It seems like it was around the same time of the season that Patrick Sparks dropped his 73. Taking nothing from his performance because he was very impressive, I just don't recall the details because the game wasn't all that important. I do recall in 2000 Patrick Sparks and Ronnie Dawn playing back to back 1st round afternoon session games in the Sweet 16. Both teams lost. Muhlenburg to LexCath and NewCath to Male. I think they were both Juniors but it was the first time I ever heard of or saw Patrick Sparks play. I remember his name being said over the PA time and again everytime he scored. I think Dawn might've been held to about 16 in NewCath's loss. I believe that Dawn and Sparks had their career highs their senior years. There have been many more memorable games that I've seen but was just wondering if anyone remembers Ronnie's carrer high game and the details a little better than I do. Was this the night that he eclipsed 2000 points or was that another highlight night of his awesome HS career?

  15. The prayer after the game was one of the most touching things I've ever seen at a sporting event in my entire life. I didn't expect to become so wrapped up in a game between two teams that I barely knew much about except for having seen SL at Rupp in 2005. And what a game it was! One that I will never forget. Without a doubt, the best game of the 2006 Sweet 16. After the game, I also didn't expect to find myself fighting off tears. Most of the crowd at Rupp did not move until the prayer was through and I could bet that there was a big lump in the throats of all in attendance. I didn't realize until reading in the paper the next day that the prayer was Walt Allen's idea and in a heartbeat the lump in my throat was there all over again. Definitely the highlight of the whole tourney as well as my whole sports fan career. Walt Allen is a class act and he has my vote for the 2006 Mr. Basketball. He made the Sweet 16 complete.

  16. CovCath had a nice team this year, but after seeing South Larel, Jeffersontown, Shelby Co., Mason Co., Madison Central, and PRP play, the Colonels losing a close one might be easier to take then to see what might've happened in the quarterfinals. Nonetheless, it would've made for a more interesting stay in Lexington to see them advance. I'm sure they would've loved the chance as well. I feel for them though after having such a great run through the districts and regionals to come up short here. I really thought that they would've gone further. I still barely know what it feels like to see a 9th Region team make it out of the 1st round of the Sweet 16. I don't quite know what the key would be to do so, but I sure hope we can find it sometime before the tournament turns 100 years old. That quick cup of coffee is really starting to taste bitter. Congratulations Colonels on a fine season, and you still proved that you were by far the best team in the 9th in 2006!

  17. RUSH

    The Trees

There is unrest in the forest,

There is trouble with the trees,

For the maples want more sunlight

And the oaks ignore their pleas.

    The trouble with the maples,

(And they're quite convinced they're right)

They say the oaks are just too lofty

And they grab up all the light.

But the oaks can't help their feelings

If they like the way they're made.

And they wonder why the maples

Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,

And the creatures all have fled,

    As the maples scream "Oppression!"

And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union

    And demanded equal rights.

    "The oaks are just too greedy;

We will make them give us light."

Now there's no more oak oppression,

For they passed a noble law,

And the trees are all kept equal

    By hatchet, axe, and saw.

  18. WOW! With their fantastic run through the regional, CovCath has erased any question of who is the best team in the 9th Region this year. They have silenced any idea that the other top 2 were even in their same league. It's been amazing to see how they have grown in leaps as the season has progressed, and I don't think we've seen the end of their progression. It seams as though they have a growth spurt with every game. The 2004 Colonels were a great team, and taking nothing from them, there's something about this year's team that never ceases to amaze with a surprise around every corner. Who knew that Danny Noll would turn into such a fantastic player? That's a hoop dreams story if I've ever seen one. AND, Micheal Young! 5 for 5 from the floor and 2 for 2 at the line. How do you like that for a championship game growth spurt? This team's not done. They're growing into a legitimate top 5 team. They're pumped, dedicated and determined to get this job done and I don't think there's a team in the state who'd be too much for them to handle. They're a great team that seams as though they're moving foward 'with a spirit that will not die'. It's going to be a thrill to see what they do at Rupp next week, and as Coash L said, 'They're not going down to Lexington for a quick cup of coffee'. What an atmosphere it will be with all the Colonel Crazies! It's time to make some noise!!! Go Colonels! Make the 9th proud at Rupp! You're doing a pretty good job of it already!
