Was the game ever close I wonder? I mean besides 0-0.

I'll have mine baked until skin is flakey and the meat is tender and juicy served with garlic whipped mashed potatoes and a nice spring mix salad with ranch dressing. If done right it can taste like chicken.

According to the KHSAA scoreboard.

I agree B-ball fan. I would love to read about the history of 9th Region basketball and we should start a thread possibly regarding this and allow eveyrone to post the years they remember and best players. As far as the 50's and 60's I cant go back that far. I do know Newport had some very good teams though back then with Dick Vories and John Turner. Vories was the best shooter in the state I hear and John Turner went on to play at Louisville.
I heard that Mel Webster was compiling data and going to put something out but not sure if true or not.
The Bishop Brossart athletic director, who's working on a book about Ninth Region basketball history, gives us the top five boys' basketball teams ever to play in the Ninth Region:

Ryan Ernst's column today - best Ninth Region teams ever. Pretty much along the lines of this thread - 81 SK, 78 Holmes, late 50's Grant (with Thacker), 54 Newport, 67 CovCath.

After the NCC game, Holmes seems to be on a mission.
I'd hate to be Conner right now...
Taking nothing away from Holmes for beating Greenup County by 49 points, but y'all do realize that Greenup has the 3rd worst record in the 16th Region at 6-18 and 3-13 against 16th Regions opponents, right? They've been spanked numerous times within a region that's nowhere near the strongest in the state. Not sure Holmes beating them can be considered much of a statement displaying that they're on a mission. I think they've been on a mission all season long, got a little full of themselves for spanking Boone and then underestimated a smart NCC team who cleverly took them out of their game. I would've been surprised if they hadn't killed Greenup. Conner has a pretty poor record as well as they do every year, but their losses usually come from a stronger schedule desiged to prepare them for post season play. It's not unlike them to stay under the radar every year and come to life and pull a few shockers here and there. To me, it's no shock anymore. It has become their yearly approach and quite often it has worked. Can't remember the last time they went to Rupp, but they've certainly played spoiler a lot in tournament play. With the districts just around the corner I'd say this is about the time Conner starts really turning it on to fine tune themselves for a competitive 33rd district tournament. I'm sure Henley's aware of this trend and will not let the Bulldogs overlook them, but that still doesn't mean that the Cougers won't be entering this game (at home) with upset on the mind as a big confidence builder. I say they play the Bulldogs a lot closer than Boone did. Holmes will still get'em though, but by no more than 7 points in closer game than the final results will indicate that gets desided at the foul line. ...Or not and maybe I'm just full of it. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm expecting a good game though. :thumb:

He and Coach T are, and have always been, the ABSOLUTE best choices to be the coaches of CovCath basketball. They are 'CovCath' right down to the core. They bleed blue and are good fruit from a good healthy tree and their roots go deep enough to shake off any ugly diseases that come along to try to infect them. Discussion about someone's eminent firing is unethical and in poor taste. This rumor is out there every year. Rumors are just rumors. Don't read much into them.
-
I've heard from a very reliable source from within the program that Coach Listerman has no intention of going anywhere and wants to remain the coach at CovCath for a long time.

I think Orange, Black and Mint Green would make great colors. What do ya think?
See my avitar to the left.  :scared:  :jump: :ylsuper: :creepy: :thumb:

I must say that the first time I ever saw the Ryle Raider's uniforms my stomach did a little flip-flop. I think it was 2001 when Doellman was a sophomore, but no one knew who he was yet and Ryle wasn't any good. I give them a thumbs up for breaking the same-old-same-old colors tradition and such, but I wasn't ready for the orange, gray, black and maybe white combination. (Maybe someone could verify all the colors that they use). I've warmed up to it little better over the years, but it really caught me off guard at first. I thought that it was way too busy and way too ugly.
No offense to Ryle though.

That half court shot was at Newport in the Districts. To make that shot even more impressive is that he jumped to his full vertical height to tip a Newport pass. Landed, spun, and then shot it from half court. Sort of like Chuck Norris would have done it.
He must've done it more than once then, because when I saw him do it, it was up on the hill at NewCath.

While we're on it, talking about great individual performances (maybe this could be a new thread) Draud's 69 and Jennings 68 are the two best performances in NKy history, according to the KHSAA records, but in that same gym I think you also had Dicky Beal drop 50 on CovCath in 80, Jennings went for 52 in another game, and going back a few years farther Rick Fischer of Holmes lit it up 48. Also, at one point I think Bob Barton, who went on to a successful major league baseball career, held the individual scoring record at Holmes (46 or 48?).
How about other schools records?
I saw Ronnie Dawn put on an unbelievable performance his senior year (2001) dropping in 50+. I Don't recall who it was against but he did it at home, and to top it off, hit a half court shot to finish a phenomenal 1st half. :thumb:
Does anyone remember the total and who they played?

It seems like I recall in recent years that Holy Cross had their Indian emblem in an awkward spot right on their butts. I could be wrong about that. It might've been another team. It seemed like it was in a spot that if you were sitting the bench you'd be sitting right on it. I'm pretty foggy about that though. I'm thinking it was over 5 years ago maybe? Who knows, it might've been incentive to play so well that you didn't have to sit the bench or else you'd be branded with an Indian design where the sun don't shine.

Great stuff guys. :thumb: Keep'em coming. It's really awesome to be going down 9th Region memory lane.:thumb: Thanks to everyone for all of their great stories.

Wait no longer! Winning one big game a month and losing 4 games you should have won, does not make you a good coach. It shows that with consistant coaching they should compete and win more.
Not get beat by Newport by 20.
The new offense is working but shows he has no clue what game plan he had going into the season.
All said great win for the school and players. They are great players and there dads should be proud sitting next to them.
You're right. NCC wins some and they lose some, but they are extremely clever at taking other teams out of their game. Usually when they lose it's not by much and even to decent teams. They know their strengths and weaknesses and that they're not going to run with everybody, so they smartly know how to slow the ball down. They probably scored somewhere near their average but the Bulldogs were nowhere near theirs. That says a lot. If the final score was 47-46 Holmes, I'd still have a tendency to think that NCC won just because of that. Highlands could've done the same thing I believe but they chose to run with Holmes and did a mighty fine job of doing so. I don't think Willie was losing anything by giving his guys a tough workout to build their stamina, but I don't see them playing the same game if they meet again. I'm sure he has many options in his arsenal of plans that he can come up with besides wearing the heck out of everybody. Tourney time I think he'll be wanting to save some of their energy and win with a slower approach. I would be more surprised by NCC beating Highlands than NCC beating Holmes.
-
Holmes beat NCC with Keirnan in second round of region last year.
Thank you. You are indeed correct about that. Holmes wins 59-44 in the 2007 Regional Tourney
Instead of NCC winning 8 of the last 12 meetings like I had first thought, NCC has won 8 of the last 13.

Would love to hear more stories of the 50's and 60's if anybody's got some. How about when Danny and Roger Tieman were playing? What kind of teams did CovCath have then? Didn't Newport have some great teams way back when? Does anyone remember any details of stuff like that? I guess going back too far would be a stretch. I wonder where I'd find a good history of the 9th Region. Has there ever been a comprehensive all inclusive type book written or stats that can be viewed that go way back? That would be cool if there were. Believe it or not, my dad played for CovCath back in 1936 and 1937 when they had a jump ball after every made shot.

Holmes wins in '99, '02, '03, & '07 (The '07 game, NCC plays without injured big man and Louisville Cardinals football player Zack Kiernan)
I honestly don't know if Dawn really went off in all 3 of those games. I just thought that it sounded good. He must've in at least one of them. I do know that Krebs did have great games in his meetings with the Bulldogs.
It appears that Valentines Day is not always sweet for the Dawgs.

St. Henry came out of the region in 2003 and lost in a thriller to the eventual state champ I think, but wasn't their win over Ryle in the regional pretty controversial? Didn't Doellman get his nose broken AND foul out? I seem to recall a lot of discussion about the officiating in that game.
Ryle did not make it to the 9th Region Tournament that year although that's hard to believe with it being Doellman's senior year. They did however host it that year. St. Henry and Simon Kenton came out of the 33rd district and met once again in the 9th Region Championship game. I do recall the incident with which you speak, but I was not in attendance at that 33rd district semi-final game. Maybe somebody who was can give us blow by blow details. :fight:

In 2001, The Highlands Bluebirds lead by Gino Guidugli and sophomore Ross Neltner stayed under the radar all season long in a very competitve 9th Region only to win the title in a thrilling double-overtime victory over the Conner Cougars. This was also Ronnie Dawn's senior year with an excellent NCC team looking to repeat their 2000 9th Region Title. Cov Cath had a pretty nice team in 2001, as well as Simon Kenton with sophomore Michael Brock. Scott Eagles even had a decent team that year coached by Jeff Trame. I'm forgetting who else played for the last 3 teams I mentioned. The most exciting team that year in my mind though was the Conner Cougers with Marcus Johnson, Jeremy Stevenson, and Terry Johnson. I was really wishing that they had won it that year because I thought that out of all the great teams that year, they were the ones that had more going for them and perhaps could've made a bigger statement than the rest if they had gone to Rupp.
The following year in 2002, The Ryle Raiders with juinor phenom Justin Doellman stayed WAY under the radar in a year that was supposed to belong to an excellent Cov Cath team. Not many people even spoke much of Doellman until he put the team on his shoulders in the 9th Region Tournament and wooed the critics all the way to the title game winning over the Colonels in an intense thriller. Dixie with the Bramlage brothers Joe and Russ, Scott, Highlands, and Simon Kenton weren't too shabby that year as well.
In 2003 I would say that the St. Henry Crusaders were hands down the right TEAM to come out of the 9th, but not before having to get through a region that boasted the most D1 signees that we had seen in awhile. Ryle (down a bit from the year before) with Doellman, Highlands with Neltner, and Simon Kenton with Michael Brock. The Pioneers also had 1000 career points guard Jordon Stowers and and excellent shooter in the Kannady (sp?) guy. Dixie had the 7 footer Mayes guy along with Russ Bramlage who could jump out of the gym. 2002 and 2003 seemed to be Dixie's best chance in many years but the 9th Region was just way too crowded for them.
Year in and year out the 9th Region has been so competitive that nothing is for certain. It should come as no surprise if the favorites get sent home early. The years of 2001-2003 display this competitiveness perfectly.

If I'm Boone County I'm taking some notes on what NCC's approach to this game was. Sure, they're not carbon copy teams of each other, but they both have a big man, nice guard play, and pretty decent 3-ball shooting. NCC obviously entered the game with a good offensive/defensive plan, Boone obviously did not. If they are to meet again in the Regionals, the Rebels have got to have a different approach or they'll end up with the same 'blow out' results. Remember, NCC did it also with not that big of a bench against the biggest bench in the 9th. Good job Breds! :thumb:

Don't mind if I pick your memory. As we can see from the 'Greatest 9th Region Team Ever' thread, there's been some great teams that have won the 9th Region and have represented us well in the Sweet 16 over the years. Not every great team made it out of the region either by major upset, or just that the 9th was very competitive that given year. Like Walton-Verona's 81 team that didn't make it out of their district, but had the eventual Pioneer State Champs on the ropes in a double-overtime thiller. Were they a great team or a 1 man show in Andy Burns? I honestly don't recall. What do you recall? What teams had everything they needed to make a statement in the Sweet 16 but just didn't get over the hump for one reason or another? Who were some of these Forgotten Greats??? Lest We Not Forget...

Season 5, Episode 21: Barney Runs for Sheriff
Original Air Date: 8 February 1965
Barney decides to run for sheriff when he thinks Andy is leaving Mayberry. When Andy ends up staying, Barney ends up running against him.
In this fast, ever-changing corrupt world, wouldn't it be nice to hang tight with some of Sheriff Andy Taylor's good values? Please tell me that we haven't all but forgotten them. The biggest shame of all of this is to poison the minds of young men who could be missing a great opportunity to be guided by one of the most loyal, honest, and philosophically sound men that they'll ever be lucky enough to know. It's sounds downright misguided for people to be calling for the head of someone who would be sorely missed and very hard to replace. When you're privileged enough to have such a class act why on earth would you want to see an era of integrity end in such a sad manner? You don't know what you've got until it's gone. Wake up America!
