  1. Sorry... but I couldn't resist...

1999 @ Newport - Eventual 9th Region All 'A' Champs Holy Cross Indians in a 1st round game with Heritage Academy. Little shoving match starts between HC's big boy with shaved head and Heritage's Burt Capel. Capel's dad rushes the floor to get a piece of the action and gets tossed from the premises. I laugh every time I think about it. LOL!!!

  2. Wow...I have no idea who you are, but I am totally diggin' the fact that this Newport team converted an "outsider". It seems as if we (our kids, schools, etc...) don't get much love from those outside of the city. It's nice to see these kids getting some much deserved recognition. :thumb:

It seems like something has been brewing in Newport for awhile, but they just never could seem to get over the hump. I thought that losing Housley to Holmes would set them back this year to being mediocre once again, but it doesn't look like the team has batted an eye about it. They look like they have many strong options to go to all over the court and their bench comes in and does a great job of contributing as well. It's fun to see every one of their offensive possessions to see who's going to step up and work some magic. I'm impressed with their size, strength, talent, and spirited teamwork. Nice slick 3 ball shooting from Luther and strong power moves in the paint by him, McDaniel, Collins & Darnel. Greene off the bench adds some meaningful minutes to the mix and the little excitable backup guard comes in to put in an honest days work. What's not to like? Hopefully it was no fluke and they can continue to play like this. It would be puzzling to me if I'd go to see them again and another Newport team would show up. I hope that's not the case. They stay focused like they did the other night and I'll be thrilled to see how far the season takes them. In a Bulldog season or not. Good basketball is good basketball. :thumb:

  3. That was a bad call but you are clearly one sided. Beechwood got hammered all night under the basket and the ref was too scared to blow his whistle. Not to mention the refs also missed some VERY OBVIOUS traveling calls.

You are correct about me being one sided. After I saw what an entertaining bunch the Wildcats were I jumped into their camp for the evening. I went to see a good game and walked away a Newport believer. Nice to see some good TEAM basketball played by a program that has suffered over the years, during a season that's been for the most part pretty dull (aside from the mighty Bulldogs). I'm happy for Beechwood too to get some good signature wins in this year against teams who usually had their number, but ultimately I was really diggin' the surprise team that Newport turned out to be. They have a little bit of that 'team of destiny' sheen going on and it's awesome to witness. :thumb:

  4. I heard it's been 20+ years since a public school has won the 9th Region All "A" for the boys. Walton-Verona won the first tournament way back win and it's been a private school winner ever since. Can anyone confirm this? I would LOVE to see Newport break the streak!!

Here's another list that has all the State winners back to 1980:

  5. Good win for Newport. Congatulations. Newport has a team that can surprise some people if they play well.

Agreed. They've got some size, muscle, talent and chemistry that I think a lot might've been overlooking. I know I did. Surprised the heck out of me. They play focused, spirited and disciplined like that they can go places. Who knows, we might be seing them in the Regional tourney down the road. With this being a Bulldog year though, and taking nothing away from them, they better nab the All 'A' while they can. GO WILDCATS! :thumb:

  6. Not as an excuse for the Tigers but it was a pretty bad officiated game IMO. Romes also fouled out with 2minutes and 30 seconds to go.

The worst and potentially game changing call of the night came at the end of the 3rd period. With time running off the clock, a Newport defender gets called for a foul when it was obvious that he didn't touch Beechwood's player. He reacted by throwing up his hands and saying 'I didn't touch him' and the ref served him up a big 'T'. (A little overblown by ref for my money). Beechwood goes to the line already up by 2 and sinks 4 free throws to now go up by 6 to start the 4th. Up until this point in the game it was nip and tuck. Newport was up by 1 after 1. Newport was up by 1 at half time. Beechwood should've only been up by 2 at the end of 3rd, but now they had their biggest lead of game, at that point, by 6. I personally thought that this would be the end of Newport. Into the 4th Beechwood extends their lead by 10 (40-30). I was about to head for the doors. Newport however IMPRESSIVELY NEVER GAVE UP! Luther started to hit some much needed '3's to get them back in the game. Newport's Darnel and forwards McDaniel and Collins played tough and made some clutch shots down low down the stretch. Every player for Newport stayed focused and contributed wonderfully in a TEAMWORK effort the ENTIRE GAME. Wish I knew all their names because I was impressed by EVERYONE of them and their high spirited effort. With game tied at 47 with 30 or so seconds on clock, Newport holds ball for last shot and Tucker tosses a beauty up from around the foul line that was nothing but nets! The roof came off! With 1.2 seconds remaining Beechwood could not convert. Game Over. Newport 49-47. It was great to see the smiles on the faces of the Newport loyal for a change. This game should certainly boost Newport's confidence. Huge win for Newport! I would've kicked myself if I had missed this one. Good luck to the Wildcats the rest of the way. Don't overlook Dayton though because they're also having a confident, better than average season themselves. It's likely however that Newport will be facing either St. Henry or NewCath in the finals. This year, I say that Newport looks awful HUNGRY. Just might be the year they take the All 'A'. Tall order with with those well coached teams, but Beechwood's Shumate is a good coach too and the Wildcats got out alive on that one. Newport deserved EVERY BIT of this WIN coming back, down by 10 and put in a bad spot by the bad call at the end of the 3rd. Y'never know. If Newport's ever gonna do it, this has got to be the year.

Congratulations on a great win! :thumb:

  7. Coach Shumate was on the radio after the game and it didn't sound as serious as it looked. I agree, I was worried for him during the game. He sat in his chair for almost the entire second half with an ice pack on his neck and a trainer looking over his shoulder. But he seemed to be ok on the radio after the game.

What station is broadcasting 9th Region basketball this year?

  8. Billy and I grew up 10 houses from each other as kids and were childhood pals from the time he was 2 and I was 4. Barely a day would go by where we weren't making after school plans of Basketball, Baseball and Football or any of the numerous games that we made up. We played on the same grade school championship team together down at the old St. Aloysius. Billy was a great friend who was loved by everyone and had a great sense of humor. My family and I have only great memories of him and my deceased Mother would get a kick out of Billy when he would sit in our kitchen and tease her by hiding things from her when she turned around. He was always making her giggle. I can't help but think how saddened she would be by his early departure. This is a complete shock to my roots and I don't know that I'll be able to understand or believe that it's true anytime soon. I bumped into Billy recently and he was excited about the idea of getting together soon with the old gang. Little did I know that it would be the last time I'd see him. I will always have only great memories of you Billy and if there's anything I can learn from this is to not take anyone for granted and that life is too short to put off getting together another day. You will be missed in so many ways that run very deep. My prayers go out to his wonderful family and hope that they soon can find the strength to understand and come to peace with such a hard thing to accept. God Bless you, Billy and to the Due family, and to all of your friends who greatly love you and cannot believe that this is real. You were a great friend and will be sorely missed.

  9. Does anyone know why Landon Sloan didn't play? I was looking forward to seeing him. Did his omittal from the roster open the door for McGraw? If so, I was satified with this replacement. It was good to see McGraw prove to the college scouts that he belonged too. It would have been a shame if he had gone unnoticed with the season's end, and this also gave him a nice opportunity to show his stuff one last time which should likely increase his offers. I think that his poised leadership qualities were well displayed and whoever gets him is getting a good one. :thumb:

  10. Agreed. Curry takes ten seconds to get down the floor, saunters around, and then can't get a shot off. Terrible, TERRIBLE play. Why doesn't Richards have the ball and Curry come around a screen?

I totally agree. They certainly could've set up a better play than the one that was executed. Curry with the ball the whole time made it a no brainer for the defense to stick to him like glue giving him no looks at all. Sure, everyone knew that he was the go to guy, but he would've had more flexibility with his options if Richards would've controlled the ball coming down the court. Not only that, 2 points would've tied it up. They really didn't need to play do or die by the 3 with the final shot. Great run through the tourney though, and Curry and Davidson certainly made it a fun ride :thumb: Too bad it had to come to an end.

  11. Click on that link at their website about Matt Wilhoit. Notice that Kenny Shields is in the English Department and Terry Trame is in the Social Studies department. Dollars to donuts, Terry Trame becomes the head coach. This is completely a guess. I have no inside information about this. It just struck me when I saw his name. If it is, it also wouldn't be bad to have Kenny around too for a little mentoring. Could this be the answer to our question? I wonder?

  12. Kinda find it hard to imagine that 47 states get it wrong and Kentucky, Delaware, and somwhere else are the only ones to get it right??? I think the setup needs to change and hopefully it will.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that life in general is way more fun and enlightening when you're not always following the pack. I've heard it said by the wiser of men that if your going the ways of the majority, it can get pretty crowded, and that you're probably going the wrong way. Remember when Mom used to say "Just cause all the other kids are jumping off the bridge doesn't mean you have to"? Kentucky has an All 'A' classic that does a fine job representing the smaller schools, and those teams, if good enough, and quite often they are, can dance in the big dance too and no class divisions prevent them from doing so. I understand those who would like to see classes, but the Sweet 16 has a goose bump charm and tradition for many that class divisions would totally dissolve. Just ask basketball fans in Indiana. Just one state a way they used to have a mighty tradition that has gone the ways of the world only to now bore the heck of them, making them wish they had never changed. I've talked to folks from Indiana while attending the Sweet 16 in Lexington, who were there because they miss what they had. We could learn from them before we did something rash, like totally destroy a great tradition for the sake of being just like everybody else.

  13. Great season Bulldogs :thumb: You did the 9th Region very proud. You gave the fans at Rupp a TEAM to remember and ended a fine season the Number 2 TEAM in the state. Not bad at all :thumb: Stay hungry and and go get'em next year and show the state of Kentucky just what a dynasty you have become. With visits, 3 out of the last 4 years, 2 Semi appearances and a Final, I think they're already starting to take notice. No doubt you'll be back again next year making it 4 out of 5, and with all of that experience, that State Trophy has your name written all over it. Get on back to Lexington and take what is rightfully yours.

    GO DAWGS!!!

  14. No way Slone and Paintsville can shoot as well as they did against J-town vs. Bulldog Tech... And that is exactly what it will take for a Tigers W. Holmes by 15 in a somewhat back and forth contest thru 3 quarters. Holmes will pull away down the stretch due to multiple turnovers and fatigue late.

The guard with the messy hair for Paintsville might wanna get faded up in the morning... He'll need every bit of his vision to even think about dribbling out of the Holmes High Hoyas' full court pressure. After what I saw late in the J-town game, that particular guard could be good for up to 7 turnovers tomorrow.

That particular guard is as tough as nails, messy hair or not. Outside of Sloan, that guy's quite a spark for Paintsiville. The dude just played his guts out against a very tough J-Town team. He's proven himself and I don't doubt that he can handle the pressure that the Bulldogs will give him. :thumb:

  15. If Paintsville can stay out of foul trouble, I say they'll stay with Holmes to the very end. They put up some points on J-Town showing that they can run. They're a very strong and smart feisty bunch. Bulldog defense will keep the score lower but I still wouldn't be surprised to see it get into the 70's with the winner winning by no more than 3. Should be an awesome game. :thumb:

  16. Who now?

I'll take the bait. It looks like Sloan has made a case for himself and has thrown his hat into the ring. Miller of course is completely in the running. Hopson? Hmmmm... maybe not. I've only seem him play once. Nice player, but...something's missing. I guess there's always a chance we'll get to see them face off in the Finals and let them decide it right on the court. Wouldn't that be something. :ylsuper:

  17. POY isn't a team award. It's a player award. One player doesn't lose a game, the team does. POY or not, a kid can only do so much. Also Love led his team to a regional berth, something Beechwood failed to do. I can understand and sympathize that Beechwood had to play Holmes, but the fact still remains.

Are you trying to imply Hall is better than Love? If you think so, you're sadly mistaken. Love had 25 the first game and 21 the second game and finished the season with an average of 21.3 ppg for the year.

Love was held to single digits just once the whole year and that was in a 16 point W that he only took 5 shots in.

Now Eta... I was just trying to warn you so you didn't have to go through the pain of the explanation twilight zone that you were entering. Looks like you got caught up in it anyway. Not sure if anyone's seeing what I'm seeing. Oh Well... so it goes...
