  1. The season is OVER for all of these teams except for....CONNER who won their first 2 district games to advance to the 33rd District Championship game against Ryle and, win or lose, have won a berth to the 9th Region Tournament. This, I remind you after having not won a game against another 9th Region team the whole season.

  2. When Ryle hosted in 2000:

    1st Round:

    Mon. 6:30 & 8:15

    Tue. 6:30 & 8:15

    Semis:

    Fri. 5:30 & 8:00

    Final:

    Sat. 7:30

    When Ryle hosted in 2003:

    1st Round:

    Mon. 6:30 & 8:15

    Tue. 6:30 & 8:15

    Semis:

    Fri. 5:00 & 8:30

    Final:

    Sat. 7:00

Traditionally the only time they clear the gym is for the Semis on Friday.

There is a little difference in the time of games for the Semis and Finals from 2000 and 2003. I don't know if the changes they made in 2003 worked out for the tournament better than in 2000. If so, I'm assuming that the times they had in 2003 are more likely the ones they'll go with this time as well, but this I do not know for sure.

  3. I don't know the final outcome but I bet whoever's there will get a chance to see Jeremy Wight play the game of his life. I think the Tigers are gonna give this game as much GAME as they can. Jeremy has been a super hard worker playing Varsity since he was a Freshman and has devleloped into a very fine player. If I already wasn't going to the CCH vs HC game I'd go see this one for sure. I think Bellevue will hang tough and make this one closer than most would think. Birds by 5. There's a little more experience going on with Bellvue than most people realize. Too bad they still don't have Chas Moore and the other 3 point threat, but I think the team they have has gelled nicely this season and is gonna get at the Birds and give them more trouble than they expect.

  4. I don't know if this thread was intended to be region specific but in the 9th Region I started the season pulling for the Holmes Bulldogs who have struggled of late. Whoever goes to Rupp from the 9th is fine by me, but I thought that they could go far. They lost one key player a couple of weeks ago and haven't been the same since. I didn't catch the details of lastnight's romp over Conner by 23 on the Couger's senior night, but it sounds like the Bulldogs of old may be back. Dollars to Donuts I bet Edmonson must've caught fire because lately he has been the missing link for Holmes to dominate with the ramaining very talented players after Greg Rice split. A few losses might've woken them up and perhaps it took a few games for their new game plan without Rice to gel. We'll see, but if they can get it together the folks at Rupp are in for a real treat!

  5. Yeah, I know. I knew they weren't exactly having a great season, but when I researched this I was dumbfounded to find that they haven't beaten anyone at all in the 9th Region this year. They lost again tonight to Holmes which is not too surprising. Holmes really needed a win to start refocusing again before the districts. What a story that would be though if the Conner Cougers could get hot at just the right time and make some noise in the postseason. For them to do so is not completely impossible and the 9th Region is really tightening up with most of the favorites except for CovCath having some struggles. Wouldn't mind seeing something crazy like this happen.

  6. I saw this on the CBS Nightly News Thursday night. At first I was wondering where the story was going and the next thing I know I'm crying my eyes out. I told a friend over dinner and he got all misty eyed without having seen it for himself. I got to work and found the video online and showed it to my ego trippin' male co-workers without telling them what the story was about. You should've heard the swallowed lumps in the throats of all of them. This story has grabbed everyone and I understand that CBS replayed it again Friday night for those who might've missed it the night before. What a heart warming story and if you don't feel moved by it, you have to already be dead. If there's ever a movie about it, I'm gonna be there opening night and the night after that...etc.. I don't think you can have too much of a story like this. :thumb:

  7. Don't be surprised if there is a Cinderella team among those teams listed in the above list. Conner from the 9th Region has a history of staying quiet most of the season and then making noise come tournament time. Last year they stayed pretty quiet all the way to the Regional final after knocking off CovCath in the semi's to eventually lose to Holmes. In 2000 when Ronnie Dawn of Newport Catholic was a junior, Conner lost to them by 1 point in the regional semi-finals when nobody heard much from them earlier that season. Now 0-11 in the region this year is pretty quiet, but wouldn't it be something if they broke out again this year and turned that ugly record around with a series of important tournament upsets? It wouldn't surprise me if they did, they've actually been playing pretty tough lately. They lost to New Cath by 2 who had just taken down Holmes and Brossart and had also advanced to the semi's of this years State All 'A'. They're a team to keep an eye on. They may be the only team listed who could make it out of the basement.

  8. It's that time of year again to check down in the basement to see what teams have not won a game yet this year.

    Region 2 - Lyon County 0-23 0-16

    Region 15 - David School 0-27 0-16

The following 9 teams have not won a game in their respective regions:

    Region 1 - Community Christian (Paducah) 1-19 0-15

    Region 2 - Lyon County 0-23 0-16

    Region 6 - St. Francis 3-21 0-6

    Region 9 - Conner 6-18 0-11

    Region 9 - Covington Latin 1-11 0-2

    Region 12 - Kentucky School f/t deaf 1-19 0-2

    Region 13 - Williamsburg 2-16 0-12

    Region 14 - Riverside Christian 3-19 0-9

    Region 15 - David School 0-27 0-16

We will be keeping a close eye on these teams to see if they can turn things around come tournament time. :p

  9. Y'know the gap really is closing in in the 9th Region and out of the top 3 the Colonels are definitely looking like the team that has it together at the right time. They have grown considerably while the Bulldogs and the Birds have had some issues. I saw a team at the U.S. Bank Arena Saturday that looked like they were having a nice practice session preparing for their trip to Rupp. Very diciplined, organized, smart and talented bunch of spirited players. They keep this up and the region is theirs. Coach L is a GREAT coach with a GREAT philosophy and he always brings together a very respectable crew of fine young men that give the 9th Region a touch of class. They've become a team that I would now enjoy seeing in the Sweet 16 this year. They're now a well oiled machine and that's what I think the 9th needs is a smart organized team that can focus on their goals and not get caught up in other distracting issues. I say 'Go Colonels, tear it up in the 9th'! You've earned it!

  10. Check that, I said earlier this week that the biggest upset in the 9th this year was Newport over Brossart. This is the biggest upset with or without Greg Rice. (who i hear has enrolled at a new school this week)

WOW!! RYLE beat boone by 22 last week. That was surprising to me. Boone over Holmes even more surpised.

Speaking of enrolling at a new school, does this now open up discussion of where Rice might take his GAME next season? I was kind of hoping to see him stay with the Dawgs and take it to the state. Last year he was the MAN in the Bulldog's close call to Warren Central. It's was pretty exciting to see this Sophomore turn some heads and I was looking forward to his repeat and becoming a household name. The remaining players have all mostly improved and they've developed a deeper bench. This Bulldog team still has a chance to WOO the folks at Rupp. It's obviously not going to be the cakewalk to get out of the 9th that it once appeared to be and the way I had it all played out in my head is not going to happen with Rice gone. Edmonson just needs to flat out start hitting. 5 or 6 of his 3's a game and I think the Dawgs would be back. Hill totally has his game together and Henderson has room to step up big time. This is also Jefferson's chance to take a leap in maturity when it's needed NOW.

In an imaginary world where do you see Rice playing next year, if at all? Since we don't know yet where's he's going let's imagine if the rules allowed him to 'suit up' immediately elsewhere. How would that effect the 9th Region Tourney if he were able to start with another team during districts etc....? Freaky if he'd go back to Holy Cross. Even freakier would be him blending in real quick at Ludlow and the Panthers take the Region by storm and shock the heck out of the state at the Sweet 16. But that's just in my imaginary world. Where's he gonna play in your imaginary world?

  11. According to KHSAA....O.K. is this for real? I left with 5 minutes to go in the 4th with the Indians down by about 10. It was a pretty good game up until the HC went cold and got outscored in the 3rd 16-3 by the Birds and by the start of the 4th Highlands looked like they were in firm control of this game. I turned to the guy next to me and said "It never fails when I leave this early that I find out that I should have stayed, Oh well, I'll take my chances". Famous last words, I guess. The officiating was getting on my nerves and in was starting to get frustrating to watch. What in the world happened in the last 5 minutes? I should've known better......

  12. 9th Region Class 'A' Tourney at Newport 1999. Holy Cross vs. Heritage. Star player for Heritage (who will remain nameless) gets into a shoving match with big stocky guy for Holy Cross. Daddy, Daddy, dear ole Daddy of star player for Heritage (who will remain nameless) jumps out of the stands and onto the floor like a mad man rushing over to come to the aid of his son. Let's see, pretty strongly built grown adult rushing the floor. What did he think that he was going to do, take out the 17 year old Holy Cross player? Anyhow, refs contained 'Dear ole Dad' and tossed him out of the gym. I can see a parent getting emotional about what he saw taking place on the floor, but to make the scene that he did was WAAAAYYYYY out of line. Does anybody remember the incident that I speak of ??? Remember, the star player for Heritage who was also the older brother of another star player for Heritage will remain nameless. ;)

  13. Kevin Beuter was outstanding tonight. The kid is as tough as nails and he outfoxed the Dawgs on numerous occasions with awesome penetration. Kiernan had his moments with monster moves to the basket connecting on some and charging on others. He can be a beast when he gets fired up. Austin Hill still holds the 'stud' position in place for the Bulldogs. He made a move to the basket tonight that dropped the jaws of all in attendence. Edmonson started out O.K. but couldn't connect after that. I'd love to see him find his game because when the kid starts hitting there's no stopping him. Perhaps he should just forget that he's trying to prove himself and just get in the flow of the game and be the 3 point dynamite that he knows that he is. Forget the pressure, just play your game. Henderson and Jefferson had their shining moments, but the Bulldogs, no matter how much they gave it their all just couldn't be as consistent later on as they where earlier on. Both teams played hard and no one slouched. I think the Dawgs early might've thought that they had this one in the bag and softened up a bit, but not much. They were very scrappy defensively and gave NewCath all kinds of fits, but the ball bounced the Breds way everytime they needed it and they clawed their way back. No one fouled out but it got close with Kiernan and Hill with 4 apiece. Another Bulldog had 4 but I forget who it was. The refs might've blown some calls tonight, but I don't think too badly. Almost all calls that angered the crowd still had fragments of uncertainty obout them. Not too many people there but those who were there got their money's worth. It was a seriously tough game.

  14. OMG...What an incredible game! I don't have exact stats but the Bulldogs came out smoking making it look like a long night for the Breds. Holmes was up by about 11 or 12 early. They had maybe an 8 point halftime lead. NewCath put the work in and never ever gave up. They finally overtook the lead real late in the game and the rest was decided at the foul line where they actually could have put it away but couldn't connect on all their foul shots. Ultimately they got the 'W' but it stayed interesting until the final horn. Alot more to relay but that's the jist of it for now.

  15. I thought about going to this game but took in the Holmes/Dixie game instead. Does anybody know anything about this game? It must've been a thriller! How did Jeremy Wight and his cast of 3 point threats do? How about Romes? How'd things go with Chas Moore playing against his other 'Tigers'?

Bellevue seems to be improving nicely as of late and Beechwood might be in a little funk but they pulled the 'W' which has to be a relief to them after having lost to Ludlow and HC 2 times. I believe Bellevue just beat Silver Grove the other night which can't be bad for them and their expectations for this season. When I saw them beat Beechwood they show'd that they are capable of having some GAME. Chase King kind of reminds me of a combination of Scott Bibbins and Jeff Vories. Maybe not as complete as either one of those guys but the kid really plays well and is exciting to watch.

Anyhow that's a whole 'nuther thread....

 With all due respect I must take exception with this comment. If the Panthers make it to the Regional they won't being sneaking in by any means. They will have earned it. Ludlow appears to be playing there best ball right now and some others appear to be going in the opposite direction. As for Penick in the regional I think it will be interesting to see how the so called "Big Boys" handle him. Along with the other twin tower Justin Hardin and the outside shooting of Chase King the Panthers could present a few problems for some teams with matchups. Call it sneaking in if you want but I know Coach Highfield won't have them looking past Lloyd.

Sorry, I thought that I was paying Ludlow a compliment. I said that they were capable of GAME. I acknowledged Penick as a player who could make things interesting in the Regional and hinted that it was an oppurtunity for all of us to see what he's made of by going against the best the 9th Region has to offer since Ludlow doesn't play a strong schedule throughout the seasn. I praised Chase King for being a really good player the likes of Bibbins and Vories. I don't know how much nicer about Ludlow I could've been. Using the words 'Sneak into the Regional' is not all that far fetched when you think that some teams will not make it to the Regionals who are better then Ludlow namely Cov Cath or Holy Cross, and that getting past Lloyd to get to the Regionals is not exactly a hugh acomplisment. The fact that I even mentioned Ludlow at all should be a compliment to you that anyone else cares enough to mention them. As much as I pull for Ludlow (having grown up in Covington) year in a year out, I still have a grip on reality that the small school that they are will typically provide them obstacles of ever really having a consistent program but I always like to see them do well. Someone seems to be a little bit knee-jerk sensitive that they can't even take the compliment when one is given. Relax dude, you'll be alright. Sorry though that you must build your belief in a team that typically has next to a 0% chance of ever doing much. I admire your allegiance to the Panthers but take a compliment gracefully when one is given. Jeeze

When I saw them beat Beechwood they show'd that they are capable of having some GAME. Chase King kind of reminds me of a combination of Scott Bibbins and Jeff Vories. 17. After watching last nights game I do not think that they have what it takes to win the region this year.

If Holmes doesn't have what it takes to win the region then who does? Sure, it's not already signed, sealed and delivered but jeeze if you can't see that they are the most athletic, road tested, tourney experienced (counting last year's trip to Rupp as SOPHOMORES) team then you got a serious layer of CAKE smudged all over your glasses.

The Birds certainly made a statement that they also are a tough team and gave the Bulldogs all that they could handle. I'm not saying that Holmes is unbeatable but until someone from the 9th Region beats them I don't know how they can't be viewed as the present favorite to win the 9th Region. When the season began the Bulldogs were the only team that I thought could represent the 9th Region this year and go far. Now I feel that the Birds could make a decent showing if by chance they end up at Rupp, but that's about it.

I think that Cov Cath is too soft. Talented players in a consistent program with no killer instints. I think that this is their problem most years. They're always fine clean cut young men who'd be frightened by their own shadows walking down an inner-city alley way. Not their fault nor is it a bad thing. Their future careers look bright, but to kick butt at Rupp you need to have a little taste for blood in your mouth. I think that the 'Dawgs' and the 'Birds' are the only teams in the 9th who fit this description.

I've always had a problem with the Bulldog's TEAM effort. They have too many superstars sometimes who all want the spotlight, but I think they regrouped well against the Birds when they got down by 13 and showed that they can play as a TEAM if they get their backs to the wall. The game against the Birds I think grew these guys up a bit and made them realize that team effort is what's gonna get them to Rupp and that there are no guarantees no matter how much talent you have. I think they might've earned a little respect for the Birds and realize that they too are a tough hard as nails bunch as well.

The winner of the 9th is not set in stone, but Highlands and Holmes are the only teams I'd care to see down at Rupp this year if the 9th expects to get out of the 1st round. But to say that Holmes doesn't have what it takes is WAY beyond my comprehension.

  18. INTENSE is all I can say. You know a game, just like a movie, was great if you're still thinking about it the next day. I can't get it off of my mind. Infact it felt like I was watching a movie packed with intense DRAMA on and off the court. I had been thinking beforehand that this game should be the biggest game of the regular season and it certainly lived up to the hype. I think that everyone there got their money's worth and I can't wait for the 'sequal' to come out somewhere around March 11th.

  19. E-Town's semi and final game with Antwain Barbour in 2000 at Rupp.

Conner's overtime win over St. Henry in the 33rd district semi-final at St. Henry's in 2001.

Highland's double-overtime win over Conner in the 9th Region final at Holmes in 2001.

St. Henry's loss to Mason Co. at Rupp in 2003.

Mason Co.'s triple-overtime win over Trinity in the quarter-finals at Rupp in 2004.

Mason Co.'s double-overtime win over Scott Co. in the Semi-finals at Rupp in 2004.

My heart broke on the last 4 games I mentioned because the outcome wasn't to my liking and I wanted Mason Co. to lose all 3 times....

But then they did lose in the Finals to Warren Central when Warren had that Matt M???? guy (can't remember his name, but I think he red shirted at Western Ky last year).

There have been many great games but those are the ones that stick out in my memory.

I physically wasn't at the Simon Kenton/Mason Co. game in '81 but I bit my nails down real good while listening to it on the radio.

  20. If the 9th Region has to face Warren Central again I think that I'm gonna be sick. 2002 over Ryle and Dollemann in the 1st round. 2004 over Cov. Cath. in the Semis. 2005 over Holmes in the 1st round. All 9th Region losses were close games. Warren eventually won it all in 2004 and were runnerups in 2005. I don't remember how far they got in 2002. Since 1999 the 9th has been 1 and out except for once when Cov. Cath. made it to the Semis. Our showings haven't been bad. St. Henry lost by 3 in the 1st round to eventual state champs Mason Co. in 2003. The 9th just keeps on picking teams that go deep into the tourney if not win the whole thing. I know that if the 9th expects to win state then they have to beat everyone they face, but I'd just be happy to see them make it at least out of the 1st round once in awhile. Maybe this year the Holmes Bulldogs can peak at the right time and give the 9th something to really be proud of. It's looking like this year and next will be the best showing for the 9th in quite awhile. It's time to see what it feels to be at Rupp on Saturday and still be alive in the Sweet 16. How sweet would that be?
