  1. The Purples have nothing to be upset about not winning this game. Some one made the statement earlier that the only reason the Purples made the score was because "They probably wouldn't have scored if not for an ill-advised X lateral that was recovered on the 10 yard line. BG then punched it in for their only score." I say bull to this statement....both teams really earned the points that were scored.....I will not listen to any bad statement about either of them...especially the Purples!

While I certainly respect your opinion and can appreciate your optimism, I stand by my statement. I saw the replay. St. X's QB ran into the line, started to get tackled, and he threw a last ditch lateral that was not on target and BG recovered. Did BG earn the recovery? Yes, they pounced on the ball once it was on the ground. But it was an unforced error to throw the ball like that. I have a hard time believing they score at all if not for that considering that they only gained 55 yards of offense and the biggest gainer all night was a 14 yard broken play.

Your defense is tremendous, but it was a lot to ask of the offense with their injuries. But I know they'll be fine, possibly as soon as next week. I apologize if you're offended by what you call a bad statement. And do understand that I agree that they have nothing to be upset about, losing only 15-7 in the face of a top notch team and a lot of adversity.

  2. Certainly once Bowling Green gets these injuries sorted out they will be back. I was unaware of the additional second half injuries, but really the damage with Hibbitt and Steelman out is enough. You're talking about a Mr. Football candidate and your only passing threat there. But still, I was surprised by how ineffective the offense was. The defense, as always, was very good, but St. X did have a good amount of success, especially through the air.

  3. Ayers was really a no doubter. Rhodes had one sack (I think?), and tagged the QB a few times.I must say that I was disappointed the game was called if for nothing else than the fact that Central will now enter a tough game with Paducah without a real full game under their wings. We'll have to wait till next week to see how their conditioning really is.

  4. Hibbitt actually already had the sprain from a scrimmage, or so I was told. That certainly didn't help them.

It sounds cliche to say, but the game truly wasn't this close. BG could not move the ball without the help of their QB and star RB. They had no passing game to speak of, and their running game was rarely on track. They probably wouldn't have scored if not for an ill-advised X lateral that was recovered on the 10 yard line. BG then punched it in for their only score.

A huge momentum moment occurred not long after that. With X up 9-7, they threw it right at BG CB Ryan Beard at about the 50, and he dropped a sure INT. Momentum could have swung on that moment, and they could have been right there. On that drive, X would eventually get the final score of the game.

  5. Game was called at the half due to lightning and rain.

Central had a tough first two series, but from there on out dominated the game completely. Ayers had two TD passes and ran for another one. The defense was pretty stout as well, allowing very little to a Franklin team that had difficulty with a sophomore QB. Franklin will have a lot of growing pains this year with a very young team.

  6. Obviously my favorite is the Dewalt dunk that pretty well crushed any of the hopes Mason had of winning that game, but possibly my favorite game from that year was the Apollo win in the Sweet 16. Earlier that year Central played truly awful in the KOB against them and lost by 25. Some people expected the same thing of Apollo in the Sweet 16. Central came out and punched them in the mouth, going up 19-0 and it was over. That was when you knew that Central was a serious threat to take the whole shebang.

  7. I'm not going to cast stones at Shelby County's ranking, but could someone explain what they have that was so roundly missed here on BGP (and for that matter at least one other ranking that I've seen)? Both the CJ & Herald have them in the top 10, and there surely has to be a reason, you'd think.

As for Christian County over Warren Central, I don't know really what to think of that yet. Not that it bothers me what they're ranked early in the season, because we all know what happens later on......

  8. Don't know if this had been posted before.....

Everyone has seen by now that the postseason format was shaken up in 2A & 4A with the regional final matchups being shuffled. For instance in 4A, District 3 plays District 6 in a third round game/region final, and District 4 plays District 5. But there has been some question as to what exactly was to happen in the state semifinal rounds. The brackets have been posted at:

    http://www.khsaa.org/football/2006/fb2a2006.htm

    http://www.khsaa.org/football/2006/fb4a2006.htm

(1A & 3A are also available, but are identical to every other year)

-District 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8, will all stay on their usual sides. 4, 5, and 6 depend on who they are matched against. For instance, the District 3/District 6 winner will stay on District 3's usual side, facing the winner of District 1 & District 2. Since all four slots on the top side are filled, 4 and 5 are matched on the bottom half to face the winner of 7 and 8. A little confusing in wording, so I'd just look at the brackets.

-Of note in 4A is that district 1, 2, 3, and 6 will enjoy the fruits of the 4/5 matchup. No school in those districts will have to face more than one Louisville school, and possibly none on the way to a state championship. District 3 and 6 never had this possibility under the previous setup; District 1 & 2 realistically could never expect this either.

  9.

Will this be the first game of the doubleheader?

I don't know for certain, but my guess would be no. Pretty much every year (or maybe EVERY year) since the bowl's inception Bowling Green has played the second game. But maybe they made another arrangement in light of last year.

  10. He is attending Murray State as far as I know, but he isn't playing sports. What caused that is that initially he signed with Murray for football, but got offered a JUCO in Utah for basketball and he went there. Before the season, he got an infection in his foot that turned very serious, and eventually life-threatening. After his recovery from that he transferred back to Murray.

  11. I don't know for sure, but I think Maresca is originally from Bosnia...

He's not from Bosnia. I think his family is of recent immigrant descent, but I don't think it was from Bosnia, and I think he was born here.

He does look uncannily like Dirk. He changed his number for his senior year from #40 to #41 for that very reason.

  12. For the most part, I've been a Tubby supporter. I certainly think he is an excellent X's and O's coach that just struggles at recruiting. Here's my question throughout this process of watching this exodus: If UK can't get top tier players in this type of situation, when will they ever get them? Typically the major issue with getting the top players is that they want to play right away. Clearly, UK is in dire need of players. They were already going to lose starters (Up to 4 I think, depending on the setup: Stockton, Sparks, Rondo, Alleyne), now they're losing all kinds of players. Counting walk-ons, eight players are gone, over half the roster. And what do they have coming? Only five players, one of which looks really rough. So, as it stands right now, UK is three players shy of a full compliment. How, HOW, does that happen?

It's my only frustration with him. I know he can coach if given the right circumstances, but he has just had the worst time getting players in and keeping them.

  13. A team I thought of immediately was Mayfield. Yeah, they usually win their region anyway, but now they've been given a two round pass considering it's been so many years since they've lost to any of those teams in their district. Now, perhaps it could help these teams that are playing them again, perhaps not. Probably not.

  14. Any math guys on here that could figure the odds out?

I'm not mathemagician, but I think this is right:

You start with the odds of picking 1 vs. 2: 1/7

Now it goes to 3 vs. 4: (1 & 2 are removed from possibilities, leaving) 1/5

    5 vs. 6: (same process) 1/3

    7 vs. 8: 1/1

Multiply probabilities to get: 0.00952 or .952% chance that one of the classes ends up with the same format as before.

Odds of it happening twice (which it "did"): 0.0000907 or .00907%.

So if my calculations are right, we've witnessed something that had a 1 in 11,025 chance of occuring. The very first time they ever did it. SURRRRRRRE.

  15. I can undersatnd what you mean...

If I was doing the draw I would automatically eliminate the 1/2 vs 7/8 matchup possibilities before drawing (& never have that combo in the rotation due to travel).

It may be "technically" inequitable that 1/2 never has to face 7/8 but I have no idea who or how that effects various teams in the 4 classes (as decisions should be made IMO). That still gives a nice variety with a rotation of 5 different regions to play against. Nothing is going to be perfect - this seems worth trying

I do like this suggestion. As I mentioned waaaaay up the line, one of the things that doesn't add up was the possibility of 1/2 vs. 7/8 because if your goal is less travel how could the possibility of Hoptown going to Ashland in round 3 possibly be better than them going to BG? If you removed those specific matchups (1 could still play 2-6, 8 could still play 3-7, etc.), then you'd at least get rid of that monster.

Of course, the dirty truth is that that was of course not what they were going for....

  16. In 2A this year you have 3-5 and 4-6 in the third round. If they are both #1 seeds to advance to that point, there will have to be a fair way to decide who hosts. I'm not sure what an objective way to do that will be.

    Here's my best guess:

Odd numbered regions host in odd years, even numbered regions in even years.

In the event that the region numbers are the same (odd v odd, even v even), then it reverts to the district number. Odd district in odd years, even district in even years.

If the district numbers are the same as well, which can only happen in the even of District 1 vs. District 5 or District 4 vs. District 8,

    The universe implodes!
