  15. No appetizers needed, Week 1 of the 2024 Kentucky high school football delivers the main course. The 3-time defending Class A state champions, Pikeville Panthers, will travel west along Route 80 for a matchup with 4A powerhouse, the Corbin Redheunds, Even though, on paper, the game has the possibility of delivering a Michelin-star rated dish, the two teams will enter the matchup from two very different perspectives. Pikeville is coming off its third straight Class A state championship. While the Panthers lost some heavy contributors from last year's title team (Sam Wright, Jeb Wilkerson, Jackson Wilkerson, Westin Bevins, Taxvian Boykins, etc.), the cupboard is far from bare. The reigning Class A state title game MVP and preseason Mr. Football candidate, Brenden Anthony, is back for Pikeville. The "do-it-all" player will be the focal point for the Panthers on both sides of the ball. Along with Isaac Duty, Deonte Stevens, Bradyn Hall, Isaiah Stanley, Blake Caudill, Drew Ferguson and many others, Pikeville looks primed to make a run for a 4th-straight Class A state championship. The Panthers are enjoying an unprecedented level of success and look to continue their dominance in 2024. Across the field, the Redhounds of Corbin enter 2024 with a high level of cautious optimism. The goal is always the same for the Redhounds, a state championship. They've been close in recent years to achieving that goal, real close. While that elusive title has escaped the grips of the Corbin faithful, the goal remains unchanged. That may be the only aspect of the Corbin program that hasn't changed. Gone is Tom Greer. Gone are Jacob Smith, Jerod Smith, Franklin West, Guy Bailey, Carter Stewart and others. Enter Luke Salmons. The former Cabell Midland coach takes over as head honcho for the Redhounds, Even though Salmons has experience coaching in Kentucky (head coach at Lawrence County, 2008-2010), his new assignment comes with heavy expectations. Fortunately for Salmons, he'll have plenty of tools in his arsenal to compete for a state championship. Kade Elam, Eli Pietrowski, Cam Estep, Jonah Mahan, Jace Hatfield and others are back, plus a couple of additions from Cabell Midland that followed Coach Salmons. Needless to say, the 2024 edition of the Redheunds will be more than equipped to compete for a state championship. This is a rematch of a 2022 game that saw Corbin beat Pikeville, 24-19. Both teams that year ended their seasons at Kroger Field. If this year's game can produce a similar result, both programs will leave the table full and ready for dessert. Who wins the game, Pikeville or Corbin?
  16. Pikeville scrimmaged Breathitt County last night. The Panthers didn’t show a lot, very basic on both sides of the ball. The running game looked strong. Brendan Anthony, Jayden Justice, Blake Caudill, and Isaiah Stanley all got touches and ran hard. Isaac Duty looked good throwing the ball and the receivers made plays. The offensive line needs work, but that’s to be expected this early in the season. Defensively, Breathitt County moved the ball on their first possession, but after that, the Pikeville D settled in and pretty much shut them down. Both teams went 10 plays on offense, 10 plays on defense for 3 sets. Then they played 2, 12:00 minute quarters (with a running clock). The game was called after the first quarter for lightning. Pikeville scored 4 times, Breathitt did not score. Breathitt looked better than they did in last year’s scrimmage against Pikevillle. Again, it was the first scrimmage for Pikeville, so they were very vanilla on both sides of the ball. My takeaways for the Panthers: they’re big, fast, and physical. If the offensive line can improve, which I expect them to do, Pikeville will be poised for another strong year.
  17. Which players from Taylor Co enrolled at Campbellsville?
  18. I’ve also been told that Pikeville will play a home and home with CAL starting in the 2025 season. The Panthers continue to schedule beasts. Those should be two great games with the way those teams have been playing that last few seasons.
