    Kenny Morgan

And any of the current coaches on staff.

    Noel Rash?

    Jeff Marksberry maybe?

Would Dan Wooley take the job back at Scott? I was always told he was waiting for Coach Rash to retire at Beechwood in hopes that he could take over at his alma mater, but it would seem that that didn't happen. Would he want to get back into the head coaching ranks at a program where he's already seen success?

If I was Scott's athletic director, I would have emails and phone calls in already with Dan Wooley, Ken Morgan, Dave Brossart, Greg Taphouse, Dave Brausch, and Kevin Siple. I'd assume Rash and Marksberry are both happily collecting their retirements, but I suppose it never hurts to ask.

Any idea what Zach Deaton is up to nowadays?

Take away yr one when he was gift wrapped a state championship team on a silver platter and he’s 13-10. Not exactly setting the world on fire. And truly the only coaching change that happened was his dad stepping down and him getting the HC spot. Dad even stuck around the first 2 yrs as an Asst. The rest of the coaching staff stayed the same.

I’m not even talking about wins/losses. I’m talking about the ability to be a leader of young men and set the example. Talk to people within the program the last 3 yrs and let me know what their opinion of him is/was.

The Etown folks I know all talked like they really like Ross Brown. That's why I was taken aback by your "doesn't have the work ethic and motivation". It reads to me as someone who's just salty to see that their coach left.

I've worked with a lot of people who left a good situation at work for another job, and that's their right. I always figured, more than likely, there was some situation I didn't know about that made things look better elsewhere. And I don't feel like it's my right to go insulting a person for looking out for #1. But you, you just go ahead and do your thing, man.

That’s the most interesting thing about this new program, who do they get for the head coach, but also, by default, who builds the entire trajectory of the program for years to come.

    An experienced head coach?
    A young up and comer?
A former HC who helped start a program?

With that, is an experienced head coach out of a job right now that is looking to do all that it takes to start a new program?

Will they trust a young coach with the entire basis and future of a program?

When it comes to a HC that has helped start a program, who is left in NKY that helped start a program? (What school was the latest to join the NKY ranks with Varsity football? And where is that coach now?)

And probably most importantly, the article stated the job is coming open in early 2024, how long is that hiring process going to take? What coach is going to accept a job in which they cannot actually coach a varsity football game until a year after? And if I’m St. Henry, wouldn’t I want a coach that is still involved and coaching, meaning they are coaching and still in the industry.

Early early names to look for I’d have to say:

If my assumption of Woody McMillen- being the last one to start a program in NKY (Walton), he fits the criteria above, but he just took the Ludlow job and is nearing retirement.

Dave Wirth - Been apart of Catholic School programs his entire career, including college.

Greg Taphouse- HC experience not coaching currently. Although the rumor in why he was fired is pretty well known news, if true, I don’t think you attach your program to that.

Alex Shelton - Would be the young up and comer of the group, the question still remains, do you give the reigns to a new program to a young guy?

Dave Brossart - Experienced HC with Catholic School experience.

Stephen Lickert- He’s open to change, as he’s applied for a job recently, Beechwood. And it has been stated often that his ultimate goal is HHS, would taking a job at St. Henry further that ultimate goal? And is a brand new program better than NCC- I say no, especially with all the changes that is coming.

Jeff Marksberry - Just recently hung up the whistle, would have to assume he’s reached the amount of years in KY public schools or is quickly approaching the amount of years to retire. But he would fit in the HC with experience that is not currently coaching.

Outsider - Do they have someone in mind, as they had to have had a football minded person in the conversation of starting a program. If so, who is that? Who did they lean on, and is he available.

I feel like I see you mention Alex Shelton in every open job thread you comment in, lol.

This is what happens when a HC gets hired because of who his dad was, gifted a state championship caliber team, and then doesn’t have the work ethic and motivation to build his own legacy.

Oh, I see. Glad to find out that's it, and not a case of a fan base having gotten comfortable after a half decade with a coach and his success, and then having unreasonable expectations for the following act once that coach leaves. And then blaming all woes on the successor instead of realizing that when a coaching staff changes over, it'll usually be reflected for a few years in a programs' W/L column.

I read it as it’s still open because they can’t find a game.

    Same.

I'm not sure if that is or isn't the official schedule graphic (aka, put out by the school) but if it is, it's kind of embarrassing to use blatantly poor grammar like that on something that is intended to act as somewhat of an advertisement for a school program.

    Crittenden is misspelled too.

Nice to see the number of openings running less this year, although Beechwood, Lexington Catholic, and maybe even the other three could topple dominos in other places if the right person is hire.

Looking at the list of new hires, it appears that most were assistant coaches that moved up in the ranks. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, necessarily. On one hand a lot of guys are moving up in the ranks, and on the other hand a lot of guys are calling it quits or getting canned.

    Hard to combat religion.

I haven't ever know the KHSAA to budge on transfer eligibility on basis of religion. The issue will have to be handled in the courts now since it's a state law and not just a KHSAA bylaw, but are you saying that the Harneys intend to argue in that Cash should be eligible to play sports at CovCath next year on the basis of the transfer being religiously based? LOL

The Harneys better start showing up every single blessed Sunday wherever they go to church and tossing double or triple into the collection plate. LOL

What are rules for transferring now?

KRS 156.070 is the law that was recently changed to govern athletic eligibility for transfers. Athletic eligibility for transfers previously only been governed by the KHSAA and hadn't ever been governed by state law until the law was enacted in 2022. It took effect this past July.

The nuts and bolts of the change is KRS 156.070(1)(I):

Any student who transfers enrollment from a district of residence to a nonresident district under KRS 157.350(4)(b) shall be ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics for one (1) calendar year from the date of the transfer.

So I’ve heard. Which is usually a dead give away when you start in one youth program, change to another school, and then get shopped around after being at one school for another.

The Harneys' reputation for being super difficult to deal with is well known info even in my neck of the woods. Interestingly enough CovCath seems to do okay handling prima donnas for however long they park their drama wagons at CovCath, be it Geisler or Mason or Starks.

Question though. Doesn't the transfer law that started this past July mean Cash will have to sit his entire sophomore year, given the fact that he played varsity football and basketball, both? I know the law makes it so there is no longer any 'appeal to the KHSAA' situation.

I disagree with this completely. Camels get an absolute test against size, speed and discipline play while the Tigers get the RPI advantage of a 2A team playing a 6A foe.

I think this is a good game for Campbell County and won't be a terrible win for Beechwood if you're looking at RPI.

Don't forget, though, if you're a Highlands fan everything Brian Weinrich does is an absolutely horrible idea. The worst.

How do you challenge the numbers you reported to the Kentucky Department of Education for funding purposes?

    1 hour ago, gchs_uk9 said:

Unless it is some type of clerical error, I'm not sure how you challenge that.

I'm not particularly sure either. Just reporting what I heard.

Maybe they went back and reviewed things after seeing the move up and found an error?

There is a solid foundation in place. Gotta get more kids to stay in district and play which has been a problem the last few years with some very good players choosing to play HS ball elsewhere. The move to 5a and a very tough district will make this a tough job.

Heard it thru the grapevine that Scott is challenging the enrollment numbers that the KHSAA used and is trying to stay 4A instead of moving up to 5A.

  13. Anybody else hear that?

That was the sound of what little remaining wind they had leaving the sails of the Admirals program completely.

Good lord, they really can't get out or their own way in the administrative offices up there in Danville, can they? This was absolutely made to be the opportunity to get Clevenger back in the saddle and pick up the pieces, and instead they just elect to sweep the pieces into a trash bag and throw them out.

That is just unbelievably impressive, and something that will probably not be matched again. A lot of work with some luck sprinkled in.

I agree with you LongTimeReader. Trinity is a great program, but if they're trying to continue measuring themselves up against the accomplishments of the guy who currently is (and probably will remain to be) the most successful coach in the history of KY HS football, they're setting themselves up for failure.

Expecting anyone to repeat what Beatty accomplished is ridiculous. Also, hot take here, Trinity's football program will probably never be as good again as it was under Beatty. Same as Highlands, who won't ever be as successful again as they were under Mueller.
