  1. Another full house for the Annual Renewal of the Crosstown Classic between neighboring Bishop Brossart and Campbell County.  This was the twenty-fifth time these two teams have battled for the traveling trophy.  With the 85-65 win tonight, it will grace the trophy case in Claryville for the 13th time, as the Camels go one-up in the rivalry.

On this night the Camels took a liking to the fast pace of the contest putting up 24 points to our 16 in the first quarter as Jake Gross knocked home a trio of 3s to pace the Camels offensive attack.  The beat went on in the second period as the Camels continued the torrid pace, adding 28 points from eight different players, to their sum total, giving them a comfortable 22 point lead, 52-30, at the break.

Campbell County won the third period 19-14,but the Mustangs took the finale 21-14 to account for the 85-65 final score. Logan Woosley and Luke Schumacher shared scoring honors with 18 points each and Mason Sepate added 14.  Campbell County had four double-figure scorers led by Aydan Hamilton with 17, Jake Gross 16, which included a trio of 3-pointers, and 12 each from Conner Weinel and Jordan Combs.  Garyn Jackson was named he Player of the Game.

Campbell County won the Freshman game 52-36, and the JV game 39-29.

Brossart moves on to host Bellevue on Monday and Pendleton County on Tuesday, while the Camels host Calvary on Monday, and will travel to St. Henry Tuesday at 6pm.

  2. The boys at Heritage Academy have something positive going this year, starting the season at 6-1.

When I saw this game on the schedule I thought this game had the potential to be a contentious Division III contest.  Bellevue started the season 3-0 and owned a win over Villa Madonna who is not D-III chopped liver.  Therefore, I was quite surprised to see the wallop laid on the Tigers tonight by the Eagles.

  3. Calvary lost 54 of its 54.6 scoring average from a year ago, when they were 20-11 and had defeated Scott in a district seeding battle.  They lost 9 seniors to graduation and while the cupboard appears bare, returning only one senior this season, they have a raft of young bodies, fielding Freshman, JV, and Varsity teams.  Unfortunately, for Coach Orlando Donaldson, who continues to toil under these conditions, there are no Mason Rusches, Ethan Mullings, Luke Ruwes or Gavin Yuskos among them right now..   The .6 who returns from last year's team is Junior Race Zachary who is averaging around 9ppg for the Cougars this year.

I think that Coach Donaldson needs to get on the phone with Coach Greg Smorey at Covington Latin school and set up a home and away series.

  4. Not a happy night for the Mustangs.  Our lofty 76ppg average took a hit, as did our shooting percentages as we really struggled to score.  Neither team had success taking care of the ball, each victimizing the other for more than 20 turnovers each.  All of this added up to a pretty ugly ballgame.

No Mustang scored double-figures.  Harrison County was led by Kaydon Custard with 24.  Will Furnish scored 14, and J.D. Kendall 12.   The Breds improve to 4-0 on the season, their best start since 2000-01.  They will play in the 9th/10th Challenge at Bracken County High School tomorrow night at 6pm where they will take on Boone County.

Brossart won the JV game 53-28.

Our Mustangs play Calvary in a district seeding event Monday night at home.

  5. Another wide open run and score event, with the Mustangs having the early advantage with a pair of 29 point quarters, leading by 19 at he half 58-39.

However, Ludlow battled back to make a game of it, closing the gap to 76-71 with just over four minutes remaining in the contest .  Our guys were up to the challenge, and finished it out strong to preserve the victory 90-81.  We placed five double-figure scorers in the book led by Logan Woosley with 20, Brandon Bezold added 19, Mason Sepate 15, Anthony Kruse 11, and Luke Schumacher 10.  Our Mustangs improve to 4-0 on the young season.

Unofficially, Jaxson Rice, the football quarterback scored 40 and Spencer Brandenburg 16 for the Panthers.

Our Mustangs will get a few days away from hoops wars to prepare for Beechwood who we will visit on Wednesday of the coming week.

  6. Our Mustangs are no stranger to the David Evans Fieldhouse, having taken on Mason County here in the 10th Region Tournament this past spring.  On Thursday night we made ourselves right at home running out to a commanding 27-9 first quarter lead, and for all intents and purposes this one was safely tucked away in the win column, our third against no losses in this young season.

The remaining three periods would see our guys register 21 more points in the 2nd stanza, 20 more in the third, and 9 while the sophomores finished things out in the finale.  Senior Brandon Bezold took a particular liking to the Holmes hardwood, knocking down six 3-pointers en-route to a 28 point performance – a career high.

Logan Woosley put up 14 and Mason Sepate 12, rounding out our double-figure scorers.  Holmes had no double-figure scorers, and were led by Jayden Humphrey and Adam Boone with 8 points apiece.  Brossart moves on to Ludlow Saturday for an early day tripleheader with the Panthers.  Our Freshmen play at 11am, with the JV and Varsity doing battle at 12:30pm, and 2pm.

  7. BB - Five Double-Figure Scorers led by Logan Woosley with 24 (7/7 FT and 3-3s), Mason Sepate 13 (9/9 FT) Brandon Bezold 12, (3-3s), Luke Schumacher 11,  Anthony Kruse 10 (8 Rbds).

    N   -  Taylen Kinney -17, Noah Silverton - 16, DeShawn Anderson 14, Marquez Miller 13

Miller is the lone Senior on the Newport roster.

Brossart goes to Holmes on Thursday.

  8. While this has been widely anticipated, it was officially announced today in the Enquirer that St. Henry would embark on a journey to varsity football at the Class 2A level starting in 2026.  In the interim they will field a Junior High team which will evolve into a JV team, which in 2026 (the next major realignment) will compete at the varsity level.

They already have a fully functional football turf surface field presently in place on their Donaldson Road campus in Erlanger.

  9. Look for somewhat of a shakeup in the schedule this coming year.

Dayton and Newport will be gone, and probably Bellevue if they are not competitive.  Ludlow will stay, along with Holy Cross, Lloyd, and Pendleton County, along with our district opponents Nicholas County, Bracken County and Paris.

Sayre and Bethel-Tate (OH) are replacements I hear being bantered about.  Grant County is also possibly in the mix.  Sheer speculation.

  10. Mustangs keep it close in first half, trail 14-10 at intermission.  Paintsville rules the second half, and draw off to win handily.

Paintsville senior running back Harris Phelps lives up to his billing while scoring the 58th, 59th, 60th,and 61st touchdowns of his career tonight in Alexandria.

Mustangs finish out with a 9-3 record and graduate 13 seniors, but the cupboard is certainly not bare.

Paintsville moves on probably to face Pikeville.

  11. I agree with most of what is being bantered about in the posts above.  Considering that we lost our quarterback in the first half of our first game, and then went through three other candidates before converting lineman Austin Schadler to the position in the Ludlow game on September 23rd there was certainly room for improvement.  Schadler, who played QB on our Colts Junior High team and was our JV quarterback his freshman year, now has six games under his belt, including a 38-13 win over a competitive Paris team, that no one here seems to have noticed.  Putting up 43 and 36 against lesser opponents, Pendleton County and Fairview, says that we can score.  Our defense is ranked 2nd in Northern Kentucky and 4th in all of Class 1A.  In a nutshell, we are not sure just what we have right now, but we are certainly headed in the right direction.

I think that it is neat that the 2020 Class 1A State Champs are coming to Alexandria, and even neater that here on the week of November 7th that the Tigers are in Paintsville preparing to travel here and play us.  Chances are that a few years back they had never heard of Bishop Brossart.

I'm hoping for a competitive game, and hitching my wagon to our defense to prevent them from running roughshod over us, and keeping them in range.  It would be neat if we could actually beat Paintsville and then let them go to Raceland to play the Rams.   I'm really proud that this team is in the conversation.  Win or Lose this has been a very successful season for a "rebuilding" Mustangs' team, with a Fifth Round Draft Choice Quarterback.

  12. The Brossart Mustangs rolled to their sixth straight win, and 9th of the season with a 36-14 win over Fairview Friday night in Alexandria.

This one was over quickly as the Mustangs had 14 points on the board before three minutes had run off of the clock, and had pushed the lead to 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.  The game was sent to a running clock early in the second quarter at 36-0 and the Mustangs had enough points to ride out the 36-14 victory.

    1Q  -  10:23  -  BB  -  14 Yard Evan Orth  - 2 Point Conversion Good -Orth  -  8-0

    1Q  -  9:46  -  BB  -  21 Yard Pick 6 by Austin Schadler Plus  Tyler Smith PAT  15-0

    1Q  -  UNK  -  BB  -  26 Yard Evan Orth TD  -  PAT  by Tyler Smith -  22-0

    1Q  -  :46    =  BB  -  29yd Pass Schadler to Alex Amin - PAT Attempt No Good - 28-0

    2Q  -  7:40  -  Austin Schadler 1 Yard Run - 2 Pt Conversion Schadler to Braydon Ketron - 36-0

    4Q  -  11:44  -  6 Yard Run Austin Miller - PAT No Good  36-7

    2:57  -  31 yard - Cameron Harper run - Caden Thomas 2 Point Conversion

NOTABLE:  Brossart's Tyler Smith sent six kick-offs out of the end-zone dooming the Eagles to begin those drives from their own 20 yard line.  Their other two offensive possessions began at the 23 and 29 yard lines.

Mustangs, now 9-2 host Paintsville next Friday night at the MAC in Alexandria at 730pm.

  13. These are the scores of the Class 1A district seeding games played recently.

Bishop Brossart 17, Nicholas Co. 15

    Paris 47, Nicholas 40

    Paris 14, Bracken Co. 8

    Brossart 7, Bracken 6

    Brossart 38, Paris 13

    Bracken 14, Nicholas 13

This has to be the most competitive district in the state in any class.  Only Brossart's win over Paris was lopsided, however, Paris probably came in as the favorite to win that game.    Pity Nicholas County who came into the district play 6-0 and co-favored with Paris to become district champs.  They lost three games by a total of 10 points, are suddenly 6-3, become the district's Number Four seed and the prize behind Door Number 2 is a bus ride to Raceland.

Brossart was not in the conversation coming into the district seeding matches.  yet eek out wins over Nicholas County and Bracken County, and soundly defeat Paris to win the Number One seed, earning us a pair of home games should we defeat Fairview on November 4th.

Ok. I was going off competition rules document but It's not updated. On website they have link to district ties but nothing listed there.

There is a lot of this sort of thing on the KHSAA site, and someone is being paid to keep the info updated.
