  1. There were two assistants last season with head coaching experience, Derek Cooksey and Brett Cooksey. Will one of them get the shot or is the thought Russell will go outside the program?
  2. Bluegrasspreps.com 16th Region Week 9 Week 9 is in the books. A few teams finished up their regular season schedule this week. As week are looking towards the district tournaments, we will have a district preview as the seedings get more solid. The 62nd district due to the small number of district games played will be doing a blind draw. 63rd is still up in the air awaiting a game this week. 63th has Ashland as #1 and Boyd County as #2. In the 62nd it looks like Rowan and Fleming will be the top 2. More to come on the district tournaments. 1) Ashland (Week 4-0 Season 14-4) Last week #1 Ashland had their biggest week of the season. They played 4 games this week including at the time #2 and undefeated North Laurel and then a Paul Lawrence Dunbar team that had just beat #1 Lex Cath. The Tomcats stepped up and went 4-0 on the week. They also had wins at Boyd County and at Fleming County. In these 3 games, the Tomcats had 3 different 30-point scorers with Sellars, Porter, and Villers each crossing the mark. Ashland’s RPI is .67873 2) Rowan County (Week 3-0 Season 11-3) Last week #2 Rowan County finished the last of their scheduled regular season games, going 3-0. The Vikings went on the road to Robertson County. Robertson County is usually a very active offense, scoring 80+ points in a game 9 times this season. The Vikings dialed up the defense allowing Robertson only 51 points. The Vikings also had wins against Boyd County and 15th region contender Johnson Central. The Vikings are #2 in the region on RPI at .62347 3) Boyd County (Week 0-4 Season 12-8) Last week #3 Boyd County also played 4 games this week. There were no cupcakes this week as well as the strength of schedule was difficult this week. The Lions went 0-4 this week with losses to Ashland, Rowan County, Montgomery County, and Russell. The Lions are generally balanced on their scoring attack with multiple players putting up double-digit scoring. Usually among those scorer is Rheyce Deboard. Deboard also recorded 30 points against Montgomery. The Lions have the 3rd best RPI in the region at .57374 4) Russell (Week 2-1 Season 11-7) Last week #5 Russell had an up and down week this week. That seems to be a consistent thing for the Devils. With the loss of their senior PG Charlie Jachimczuk to a sprained ankle, the Devils went 2-1 on the season. The one loss was a big loss, losing to district rival Raceland. That loss moved the Devils into a possible 3-way tie to determine the district. In their other games, Russell have 2 quality wins over East Carter and Boyd County. Russell is #5 in region RPI at .53614 5) Raceland (Week 3-0 Season 10-6) Last week #7 Raceland played 3 games this week to finish up their regular season scheduled games. The Rams beat Fairview and Huntington St Joe with a huge win at Russell sandwiched in between. With that win, the Rams could find themselves in a 3-way tie for the top seed in the district tournament. Kirk “Mr 30-Point Man” Pence eclipsed the mark not once but twice this week. Raceland is #7 in the region in RPI at .51173 6) Lewis County (Week 2-0 Season 11-8) Last week #8 Lewis County had 2 games this week. They started in the State Sectional of the All-A with a hard-fought loss to eventual all-a Champion St Henry’s. Next they hosted Lewis County and came up short to the Lions. The Comets are #4 in the region in RPI at .56253 😎 East Carter (Week 0-2 Season 5-3) Last week #6 East Carter was on the road this week with games at Russell and at Greenup County. The Raiders came up short in both of the games. The biggest thing hurting the Raiders this week was a lack of efficiency on the offensive end. In their two games, the Raiders shot 33% from the field against Russell and 28% from the field against Greenup County. They will certainly look to improve that. East Carter is Region #8 in RPI at .49870 9) Fleming County (Week 1-3 Season 5-11) Last week #10 Fleming County was 1-2 on the week. 3. Bluegrasspreps.com 16th Region Week 8 Week 8 was a much better week in the 16th region. All region teams played games this week. The feature of the week was a clash of the Titans when Rowan County visited Ashland. The game was everything it was expected to be as Ashland got the win in overtime. Some of the district seedings are becoming clear while others are headed to a drawing to determine the seeds. Numbers 1-3 are pretty set. Then, the rankings become much more difficult. Numbers 4-8 could really go in about any order. Arguments could be made for any of those 4 teams to be #4. Time will show how they should be ranked. 1) Ashland (Week 2-2 Season 10-4) Last week #1 Ashland had a very busy week, playing 4 games this week. Ashland hosted Rowan county in a big 16th region battle. Ashland got the win in overtime. Following that, The Tomcats went on the road with away games at Cov Cath and Simon Kenton. Ashland was on the losing end of both of those games. Ashland finished the week with a road win at Fairview. The Cov Cath and Simon Kenton games should benefit the Tomcats down the road. Ashland 4 games scheduled again this week with only 5 regular season games left on the schedule 2) Rowan County (Week 1-2 Season 8-3) Last week #2 Rowan was able to get back on the court this week, playing 3 games. The Vikings went to Ashland, losing to the Tomcats in overtime. Following that, the Vikings hosted a very good Highlands. They ended the week with a home blowout against Bath County. 4 of the Vikings final 5 games are scheduled for this week, including a back to back home/away against Boyd County. 3) Boyd County (Week 2-1 Season 11-4) Last week #3 Boyd County’s scheduled game with Rowan County was cancelled due to COVID. 4) Russell (Week 1-2 Season 9-6) Last week #5 Russell had a home win against Fairview, followed by two losses, one to Paintsville and one to district rival Lewis County. Russell has a big game with Raceland this week. Win that game and Russell is the number 1 seed. Lose the game and if Lewis County beats Fairview and Russell, Raceland, and Lewis will tie for top seed to be determined by a draw. 5) East Carter (Week 2-1 Season 5-1) Last week #6 East Carter finally was able to have a full week of games this week. The Raiders played 3 games this week. All 3 games were on the road. The Raiders got the win against Rose Hill and Elliott County. The Raiders came up short against Boyd County. Currently the Raiders have 4 regular season games scheduled, with 3 to be played this week. 6) West Carter (Week 3-0 Season 9-3) Last week #4 This was a 3-win week for the Comets. In their biggest game of the week, the Comets got the win in the All-A first Round against Robertson County, in overtime. The Comets will be hosting St Henry on March 2. Other than the all-A, the Comets currently only have 1 regular season game left on the schedule. 7) Raceland (Week 2-1 Season 7-6) Last week #7 Raceland played 3 games this week. 2 of the games were seeding games. In those games, the Rams split with a loss to Lewis County and a win against Greenup County. March 4 is a big day for Raceland. A win against Russell and a little help from Lewis County will result in a 3 way tie for top seed. 😎 Lewis County (Week 2-1 Season 9-8) Last week #8 This was a great week for Lewis County. The Lions went 2-1. Fortunately for them, the 2 wins were against district foes Russell and Lewis County. Those 2 wins coupled with a win this week against Greenup and Lewis County could find themselves in a tie for the number one seed. In their other game, the Lions were on the short end against Bishop Brossart. 9) Bath County (Week 1-3 Season 4-10) Last week #9 Bath County had a busy week this week. The Wildcats played 4 games. The started off with a road win at Menifee County. The Wildcats followed that off losing the next three to Augusta, Lawrence County, and Rowan County respectively. 10) Fleming County (Week 1-3 Season 4-9) Last week #10 Fleming County played 4 games this week. The Panthers started the week with 3 losses to Robertson, Bluegrass United, and Mason County. After those three, the Panthers righted the ship against Nicholas County. 11) Morgan County (Week 1-2 Season 4-3) Last week #11 Thankfully, Morgan County was able to get back on the court after a long COVID break. The Cougars has a win against Menifee County and 2 losses to district rival West Carter. 12) Elliott County (Week 2-1 Season 2-5) Last week #12 Elliott County played three games this week. The Lions had a loss to East Carter and wins against St Patrick and Fairview. 13) Greenup County (Week 0-3 Season 4-13) Last week #13 Following 3 losses this week, the Musketeers are on a 7 game losing streak. However, Greenup has shown flashes of very good play. An instance was a 50-48 loss to a good Boyd County team. Greenup is set as the 4th seed for district play and waiting to see who they will end up playing. 14) Fairview (Week 0-4 Season 4-15) Last week #14 Fairview went 0-4 for the week. The Eagles had losses to Russell, Elliott County, Phelps, and Ashland. Jaxson Manning played well this week averaging 23.7 points a game this week. 15) Rose Hill (Week 1-2 Season 4-15) Last week #16 Rose Hill went 1-2 for the week. Their highlight was a 60-56 win over Greenup County. The Royals also had losses to East Carter and Pike County Central. 16) Menifee County (Week 0-4 Season 1-17) Last week #15 Menifee County dropped 4 games this week. They had losses to Morgan County, Bath County, Lee County, and Raceland.
  4. VERY happy for the Cougars!! I have felt so bad for them and East Carter both. Work so hard then be so limited with number of games.

  10. Bluegrasspreps.com 16th Region Week 4 These rankings are getting harder to harder to do with some teams playing and other teams not. Does a team that dropped 2 of 3 for the week drop below a team that doesn’t play at all? Maybe, but maybe not. This I can say for certain. Time will tell. 1) Ashland (Week 1-1 Season 6-2) Last week #1 Ashland had a home blow-out against Rose Hill. Following a cancellation for Saturday, Coach Mays did some work and scheduled a long road trip to Bowling Green. The Tomcats jumped out early but their shots quit falling and the suffered a 26-point loss to a very good Bowling Green team. 2) Rowan County (Week 2-0 Season 5-1) Last week #2 Rowan County had a road win at Menifee County and a home win against West Jessamine. The Vikings are looking very good right now. The showdown with Ashland was cancelled due to COVID. The Lions are currently on a 7 game winning streak. The Lions are a very good basketball team. At this point, Boyd seems to be one of the 3 teams that can win the region. However, there is a lot of basketball to be played. 4) West Carter (Week 0-0 Season 3-1) Last week #6 West Carter has had their schedule beaten up bad by COVID. Their last game was Jan 11 and, as of right now, now scheduled to play again until Feb 3. 5) Russell (Week 0-1 Season 6-3) Last week #5 Russell’s only game of the week was a loss in the Gary Moore Classic against Franklin County. Franklin County is a 5-4 team. 6) East Carter (Week 0-0 Season 2-0) Last week #7 East Carter was also hurt by COVID this week. Their last game was Jan 14. Their next scheduled game is Feb 8. The Raiders are leading the award for least games played so far with 2. 7) Raceland (Week 0-0 Season 3-2) Last week #4 Raceland was on COVID suspension all of week 3 😎 Lewis County (Week 0-2 Season 4-5) Last week #8 Lewis County went 0-2 for the week. The Lions lost on the road at Elliott County and dropped a home game to Mason County. This was certainly a rough week for the Lions. 9) Bath County (Week 0-0 Season 1-2) Last week #9 Bath County has been on COVID cancellation policy since Jan 9. 10) Fleming County (Week 1-2 Season 2-4) Last week #10 Fleming County went 1-2 this week. The Wildcats lost to Rowan County, Elliott County, and Floyd County Central this week. 16) Rose Hill (Week 0-2 Season 0-11) Last week #16 Rose Hill went 0-2 this week. The Royals lost to region #1 Ashland and to Prestonsburg this week.
  11. Bluegrasspreps.com 16th Region Week 3 Week 3 was a rough week for 16th region teams with 6 of the 16 teams not playing a game due to COVID. Several others that did play had lost games are just trying to get a sense on momentum going. 1) Ashland (Week 1-0 Season 5-1) Last week #1 Ashland was able to get a home win this week before getting things suspended because of COVID.
