  1. I see 2 names on there that are family. I guess I'll have to root for the Blueboys for sure this year....but just sometimes. :angrybird8:

Come on now. It's an American tradition to root for underdogs! Can't you pull for the colonels to beat the birds just once? Watching the birds drum the colonels gets boring year after year after year...doesn't it?

  2. First time I've seen the logo actually on a helmet. I'm still firmly planted in the "looks pretty lame" camp.

Is it just me, or does it appear that they're using Microsoft Word to design the football and soccer uniforms at Cov Cath these days.

Coach Eviston looks like a BOSS!! I'm very excited about this season. Covington Catholic finally has a real coach and staff.

  3. I consider it a non-issue as people will get used to it with time. All that really matters is the teams on the field are playing at a high level.

Agreed. I'm beyond the change of appearance. The colonels need to focus on execution and team cohesion and work to restore the lagging football program.

  4. Correct.

When Highlands original field was put in the Turf was laid and a Combo of Bunker/Play Sand and Recycled Nike Gym shoes was applied as the "Infill".....the Subgrade at Highlands and all other Applications that I have seen has a Special Crushed Limestone that is roughly 10" thick for the Base. Everything you see flying during a Game is "Infill" that has been groomed in after Installation. Apparently it is done differently in other places.

The Subgrade has a pretty impressive Drainage system that Flows the Water away. That's why I couldn't see Newport just sanitizing their field. The fine River Loom would have settled in the drainage lines and made it almost impossible to drain. Just my 2 cents! Newports field will flood again!

While we are being very particular about word usage and the correct meaning....I'm pretty sure you are referring to "river loam."

Cov Cath. I don't know how many times I've said it on BGP here in the last handful of months, but I think their schedule is going to be more than they want this year. They're going to be replacing starter in several skill positions (including QB), and they're going to have an entirely new look as a result of the new coaching staff. I don't think they're going to be a "bad team", but I don't think they're going to be able to do much better than 5-5, or maybe 6-4 if they're lucky. And as much as I hope I'm wrong, I don't see them making it past the second round of the playoffs.

    Boooooooooooo this man!!! ^^^^^^:ohbrother:

  6. If a team has fast and athletic d-linemen and they have phenomenal line backers...or if your opponent efficiently runs the spread I get it. Try and overwhelm the o-line with stunts and gap shooting. This style requires intense discipline and coaching. I still think high school football is all about execution and simplicity normally is best for that.

I'm not advocating archaic schemes either, just don't understand the constant push to complicate things at the high school level when a teams talent level does not warrant it.

  7. I don't think you're reading SC97's statement correctly. Highlands' ability to put quality players on the field is because of their coaching staff, which has proven for decades that it is able to develop skilled players over and over again, because of its community support, which is as good or better than Cov Cath's, and because of its behemoth system that includes 100 years of tradition and 50+ years of a top notch feeder system that has been coaching 'the Bluebird way' into the boys in Ft . Thomas and having them ready to roll the moment the moment they step through the doors at Highlands. The talent in their "players on the field" is without question the result of those things, but...it is still most definitely in those players.

Thanks buddy for articulating what I couldn't. ^^^this is exactly what I mean!

  8. You can say that again, and again, and again...

I'm sorry but I respectfully disagree. Highlands has a fantastic pool of talent to draw from, but their ultimate strength is the coaching expertise, the community support, and the bohemoth system that keeps churning out wins. Cov Cath has 500 young men to field a team and many of the best atheletes don't play football or sports in general.

Regardless, many would say that my senior year heavily favored Highlands in the level of talent. I disagree with that, but regardless we won. Cov Cath won 5 out of 10 state championships (1987-1997). Football was something to be proud of back then...not so much in recent years. Highlands has defeated the colonels mentally more than anything. Hopefully that will change and the gap between the 2 programs lessens.

  9. Let's call it like it is...Covington Catholic has not had a football coach or much of a program since 2006. The gap between Highlands and CCH has to narrow a bit just because of the coaching improvement. I refuse to believe that Highlands domination is a result of superior talent, year in and year out. Coach Eviston has an uphill battle but I know the school and I know Eddie...it's a great fit.

  10. Apparently the defense is going to be legit this year. The offense should be interesting. I've heard the quarterbacks are taking to the run and shoot rather quickly, but it will remain undetermined until they are game tested. The schedule is pretty ridiculous but as it has always been said, "in order to be the man...you have to beat the man"....and we all know who that "man" is.

  11. Pretty tough schedule, but the defense should keep them in games. They'll be pretty good up front with Steins, Shields and Galvin. The second level has some really good players with Shelton at linebacker and Pitzer at outside linebacker/safety.

The only spot I'm concerned about is the second corner opposite of Best. However, the talent is there, let's see if the defensive staff is up to the challenge.

Sam Beiting is a phenomenal coach. I think the secondary will come down to execution and not instruction.
