  1. So tell me how those 37 were scored. Do you know? I would not say 37 when the last 2 scores occurred with less than 3 minutes to go and totaled less than 30 yards total. By then the defense was completely out of gas. No problem with the discussion, just know the facts before getting on here and spouting off. What the heck are you talking about "win at all cost?" That statement has absolutely nothing to do with the game. You act as if Highlands was trying to cheat or something. Game of life? They lost a football game, nothing more nothing less. You continue to want to talk about some chatter on the field that you heard and saw none of and quite honestly have no idea what was said on the field by anyone during the entire 48 minutes.

Soooo....the last 2 scores don't count because they occurred with under 3 minutes left in the game and the defense was tired?

  2. Serious question, Highlands fans, has the dominance that has been established for 10 years just been erased by one game? Seriously? One loss to a good team...that ultimately means not much in your quest...does that mean that the entire tradition has been terminated? It very well could be a down year. So what?? Your established excellence shouldn't be forgotten because of one year much less, one game. As a highlands foe, I expect more. the highlands ship will right itself.

  3. Does "BOOM!!" mean you like the post or that you you just blew it up?

The post is perfect. There is so much hand wringing and over analyzation. It was apparently a good game. Things happen. This is hardly the end of either teams season. The way high-school football is setup, you don't need to win many games to make the playoffs. No need to pile on (either team.... Good or bad). These are young men and the most important objectives are for them to have fun and learn life lessons....while hopefully learning the game and winning as many games as they can.

  4. HB, I'm getting the impression folks are be-littling the Jags accomplishment based on a "building consensus," of this being a down year for the Birds. I'm not going to ask for your feedback on this in that I know of the resulting Gettysburg address response I may get...:lol2:

Down year or not Cooper knocked the king, prince, serf ( based on what some are saying ) off the throne and yes the great run had to end sometime. So rather than substantiating or not the results of this game let's celebrate the fact that Cooper plays both Ryle and SK. Cooper will have their opportunities to validate their place on a potential NKY throne.

Cooper is in the catbird seat ( all pun intended ), they earned it. It's hs football folks. However you want to spin it, live through it. It's about kids growing and getting ready for the "game of life."

And btw a big hats off to the objective Bird fans who are focusing on "constructive criticism" and encouraging the flock.

5A, 6A football in NKY is comparable to a bee hive just knocked out of a tree after week 0. Ultimately it will come down to who wants it more, who executes, some luck, strength, and will power. As hs football always does...

And sk1 don't think I didn't know your neers where losing to a 2A school past midway in the 3rd. Turnovers haunt and you are fortunate the ball bounced in your favor.

The birds lose, it's Sunday morning at 8:30a and there are 12+ folks dialed into this thread. Guru is getting fat and happy!

Have a great Sunday folks and keep the Covcath RB Darlington in your prayers this week for ideal an ideal recovery and healing from an ankle injury. Because we know that those blueboys pray for our kids when we sustain injuries against them....?

    BOOM!!

  5. Again we are talking about the offense getting manhandled. I would hardly say that the defense got manhandled in any way. Did a great job to keep it close with the HOPE of somehow finding magic in a bottle.

What's the point in reiterating how poorly the offense played? I watched the CCH vs Ryle game last night. It was a great game all the way around. Cov Caths offense was really impressive. Their defense not so much. They are of the same team and everyone wearing a Cov Cath jersey lost the game. I don't understand what you are trying to prove?

  6. I don't think we're ready. We're not going to do that good this year in my opinion. But my optimism is still better than ever. A new coach doesn't instantly make a team better. It takes time. I predict 42 - 21 X marks the spot.

I think they are closer than you are suggesting. They have a long way to go, but I think they will be in the thick of things come playoff time. Younger kids improving. Hopefully talented kids playing both ways. Better execution on defense. Taking lumps from powerhouse programs. The colonels could make it interesting by the end of the year!

  7. Tanner Morgan is a really good quarterback. I do think the Cov Cath defense helped him out...A LOT! He was three step dropping all evening and zipping short (high percentage) passes. He threw a deep ball, for a completion, that was absolutely perfect.

I found Cov Cath's sophomore quarter back to be very impressive. He orchestrated the offense really well and didn't turn the ball over. The Colonel offense is ligit! I just hope that some of the skilled players will end up playing both sides of the ball.

  8. Here is the bottom line for this game. Cov. Cath lost a lot of very good players from last years team, where as Ryle didn't. Ryle has much better play makers then Cov. Cath, not to mention over all team speed as well. I really don't think this game will be that close, Ryle by 10 or more points, they are the better team, period end of story. Expect your first loss Cov. Cath in about 9 hrs. from now. FEAR DA RAIDER!
    GO RAIDERS!

    Hahahaha

  9. I win because as I said the quote, "I'm just saying, the best football minds are not employing this strategy for a reason.", is irrelevant to the success or failure of this strategy, or to the future adoption or not of this strategy.

Yeah you win. The coaches I listed probably have not heard of this scheme yet. Once they do, I expect full implementation.

  10. I

1990= "What do you mean they are dropping linemen into coverage and playing zone when linebackers are blitzing? I'm just saying, the best football minds are not employing this strategy for a reason."

Ok. You win. Obviously the game of football has been revolutionized and all teams are going to adopt this style. Statistics don't lie and the probability of winning games without kicking onsides everytime and without going for it on fourth down...will be impossible. All deep ball kickers and punters need not apply. All coaches will now gamble away possessions and field position because statistics say it's in their favor. Cause yeah you are completely right, it's just like the advent of the forward pass, the spread offense, zone blocking, direct snaps and whatever else you said.

Edit: should we start talking about all the gimmicks that haven't become so mainstream?

  11. 1930="What do you mean they put a guy behind the center and take a direct snap?I'm just saying, the best football minds are not employing this strategy for a reason."

1959= "What do you mean the qb is lining up in this shotgun thing and not under center? I'm just saying, the best football minds are not employing this strategy for a reason.

Keep trying, not quite getting there.

  12. You stuck your foot in your mouth on this one because Belichick studies analytics and goes for it more that typical coaches, and one year when it backfired against the Colts got villified for it. People punt because thats whats always been done, fans understand you when you punt, the media understands you when you punt. Its hard to defend change. Its exactly the same as my examples.

Does belichick line up and kick an onside kick EVERY kickoff? Do the Patriots still have a punter on the roster? Obviously there are scenarios where this makes sense. There are also teams that can/will effectively run this type of scheme. I view it as the wildcat offense. It's not the wave of the future. It's a component...until the kicking game is outlawed to prevent injury.

Edit: I'm pretty sure all good coaches study analytics to the best of their ability.

  13. Irrelevant comment. Imagine 1916= "This whole passing the football thing with people lining up outside the box, I'm just saying, the best football minds are not employing this strategy for a reason."

Yeah obviously the same...but not really. If you think guys like Saben, Meyer, belichick, punt because they are opposed to change and evolution of the game, I completely disagree. Do you really think that they do not completely analyze and ststistics and probabilities to help them win a football game? They are just guys who are unwavering in their belief that "this is how football is played and by golly we will keep it that way?" They aren't "forward enough" thinkers?

Alignment and drawing up plays is one thing, gambling on possession and field position is another.

  14. Well they made some in school and posted them on twitter with a superimposed " bad word " Ryle. The spirit and fun of competition is one thing. Flat out disrespect for another institution and singling out players is another. No big deal, it's just not what I teach my kids. Some of the Ryle players seen them.

Um...pretty sure stuff like this has always happened. It should not be condoned and it doesn't sound like Cch will tolerate it. But come on

  15. I've always said this guy is brilliant. I'm not going to say this would work for everyone without a doubt, but I do think it would work for more teams than someone would want to admit.

I fully think giving up the extra yardage for a few extra offensive drives per game is a very easy trade off. If people stopped thinking about it being an onside kick, and more about just blind probability, I think it would get a better review. I mean, if someone asked a coach "Hey coach, I'm going to roll these dice, and if it comes up as one of these numbers, your opponent starts at the 45. If its the other numbers, you get a free possession. If you don't roll the dice, they get the ball wherever they can return it to and you most likely won't get it back." I'll take that chance every time.

If you're bad on defense, why not take the chance? They're going to probably score on you anyway. If they're bad on offense, does it really matter where they get the ball?

And I don't think anybody has said anything about the sheer boost in excitement that a team gets by recovering an onside kick. If you want to demoralize a team, recover an onside kick.

Except, what about when you don't recover a single onside kick...and their offense scores every time while starting at mid field...what happens to morale then?

I'm just saying, the best football minds are not employing this strategy for a reason.

  16. I don't understand how he glosses over the 20% difference in scoring probability when pinned back and going for it? If your defense is good, I think that probability actually becomes greater. If you have a kicker, why would you not aim for a touchback, rather than giving the ball to them at the 45? Coach Kelley said that their average kickoff return was brought out to the 33. Why not work on kickoff coverage? We can all point to different successes this strategy has achieved, but I hardly think it should become the norm. Guys like nick saben, bill belichick, and even chip Kelly don't coach games like this for a reason.
