"Several problems these last couple years"? What problems this year aside from the losses? Half the team quitting at half time last year? No- not even close. You have some really bad info coming from an "unbiased parent." There were some bad vibes in the post Highlands loss going into Beechwood no doubt, but that staff is entirely gone so I'm not sure what kind of impact you think last year has on this year. I have seen and heard nothing but positive from this staff and these kids. Sure they are torn up about losing - but what competitive team wouldn't be?

I'm glad I'm wrong on the numbers. I hope it has absolutely NO impact on this years team. I hope that it has already been "flushed from the system." I just can't believe that it happened in the first place.

I have no idea of any problems this year. My concern about "culture," was the "culture" in which players did not want to take the field in the second half against beechwood. I'm sure there were all kinds of reasons this occurred. The thread is comparing this years team to last years. I just hope that whatever caused several of the players to want to quit, has been fixed.

You are obviously closer than I am. I can see that you don't want to comment in detail.

 

Cool. I'd just be careful about what you post that can leave people to wonder what exactly is going on. It tends to lead people to exaggerate the real problems and then it snowballs from there.

You know the same people of which I'm referring. EVERYONE knows about the Beechwood game last year. I have no idea of what is currently going on, other than it didn't seem like the same team that played ryle, played the cincinnati schools. I'm just saying that a team wanting to quit mid-game last year is kinda a big deal.

There were several problems these last couple years correct? It ultimately culminated in half the team threatening to quit during half time, of a game against a rival school. All kinds of things were going on that were counter productive to success, according to an unbiased parent whose judgement I trust. A former colonel, who knows the program inside an out, has voiced concern...so I share his concern. I'm no closer to the program than you are. I don't understand why it is sooooo earth shattering that I question the "culture" of a program when half of the team almost a quits....during a game? Something positive is not happening when this occurs.

First of all, unlike you, I'm not "taking offense" to ANYTHING I read on an Internet forum. My "truly honored" comment should have been "truly amazed." Second, I challenge you to point to where I described the basketball program as being a negative? I said it was an aspect (positive or negative) and I stand by that. Third, I hope every student that passes the placement test and truly wants to come to Cov Cath does so. The student body helps make up the "culture." The more students that want to go to school and play football at CCH...the better.

I'm wondering why you are laser focused on 2 small aspects that I listed? What are you not commenting on?

How about this? Since you made the claim about needing the culture to be better can you give clear details?

 

Are you saying CCH is now a "rich school?" What is the concern about basketball?

I'm truly honored you care so much about what I think. The basketball program is awesome. They are doing some great things. I think the school's intention is to emulate their approach and success. That could very well be a positive or a negative for the football program.

What am I not commenting on? I've defined what I think makes up the programs "culture." Whatever you want to call it...it hasn't worked in 8 years and some changes need to be made. You think that a difference in talent alone resulted in the losses to St. X and Sycamore. I think the team could have played much better than they did. Obviously Cov Cath was not going to come close to winning, but I think they could have gritted out a better performance for themselves.

Yes - got a record group of incoming Frosh that came in this year. Got almost half the boys attending IHM which traditionally matriculate to St Henry.

Are you talking about a Blue collar/ White collar thing in regards to culture?

I do think that is of concern as well. I know that more students are on tuition assistance than ever, but the tuition is also higher than ever.

Where players are drawn from?

With the emergence of strong programs in Boone county, does Cov Cath get as many BC players as they used to? I was told they do not.

I'd love to hear more about this comment in this thread, and less about Highlands and Ryle. Do you mind expounding on this?

I was intentionally vague because I think the "culture" encompasses so many facets.

Coaching transition, parent involvement, years of domination by a rival, where players are drawn from, the focus on basketball, new facilities, strength of schedule, the rumor of players quiting at half time during the beechwood game, coaching turn over, player expectation and attitude, etc all positively or negatively impact the success of the program. I'm just saying the positive aspect need to be retained and the negatives weeded out.

Unless you are a coach (which I doubt) then you have ZERO CLUE about this team's level of desire and motivation.

So you didn't notice a change in attitude from the Ryle game to the St X and sycamore game? I'm not talking about the obvious mismatch in talent, but the teams overall effort.

And please make no mistake about it. I wasn't making any reference about when I played. Regardless, I wouldnt beat around the bush. The football program was in a much better position back then. That matters nothing right now. But really good thought though.

Pride and spirit don't beat teams you have no business playing nor do they beat D1 players when you have maybe 1 on your roster.

Not sure what spirit you are talking about from previous years. That was one of the things that everyone said was lacking under the previous staff.

 

It's early. When this coach was at NCC he used to get beat early against tough competition and at playoff time they were ready. Not saying this team is going to win state but they will get better as they go and into the next few years.

Pride won't win against far superior opponents, but It would produce more than 10 yards of offense in 2 games. It would help tremendously with their poor tackling.

"Spirit" and several other components were lacking within the program under the last regime. The problem is, that culture and mindset is still kinda present. It will take some time to flush that from the system. I think the colonels will be fine, I just hope they can right the ship this season.

Be patient, you all have a very good coach. It will take some time. 2-3 years away, many in Park Hills and other places will be happy.

Coaching is definitely not the problem. I'm worried about the culture of the school.

I think the talent level and overall mentality are in question at Cov Cath. I know they can obviously turn things around, but it's gut check time. The desire and motivation seems to be sub par. I hope I'm wrong, but the team seems completely defeated. It's not like they are just getting crushed by better teams...it doesn't appear the are playing with pride. Getting manhandled by far better opponents was expected. The way in which they were manhandled is of concern.

Eviston had no involvement in making Cov Cath's schedule. This year's schedule, and the contracts they signed into essentially make for the same schedule next year as well, was devised and agreed to last year former HC Dave Wirth, retired AD Mike Guidugli, and former assistant AD Tony Bacigalupo, who is now Cov Cath's AD.

My comment about firing the person/persons responsible was a joke because of the above listed info. I will admit that mr Bacigalupo needs a stern talking to...at least. Just kidding.

Why are you guys crying about who made the schedule. Over the pass years Highlands has played GCL teams and they didn't complain. Your Covcath you should want to play these teams quit crying the basketball coaches don't cry they play the best teams in the state and out of the state. Take your beat down like a man and move on.

Who is crying? When has highlands loaded their schedule quite like this? (Actual question). If you can't see the difference in scheduling 1 or 2 Gcl schools per year and the current schedule...

Haven't we talked about CovCath's schedule enough?! Talk about beating a dead horse...

No kidding. It's a tough schedule. It was set before coach Eviston was hired. Doesn't really matter as to their playoff contention. Yada yada yada.

Does Cov Cath financially benefit from st X? If so, I could see why they have some interest in Scheduling the game. The Gcl is LOADED this year. St X looks like a college team! I still think the colonels should have faired better. Much to improve on.

Where has the time gone? All you guys were way too athletic for this farm kid (at the time). Pretty sure any time I played I was very last to be picked. Hahahah

Couple of ugly DTs, but overall really good. I like how Pfifer went from being Squints Paladoris in Knothole always talking trash to us to being David Fulcher by his senior year. Why didn't I grow like that?

hahaha! Pfeiffer came out of no where. He surprised us. He had an extremely good DB coach that cut him no slack as well. Probably the greatest player development that I've ever seen.

Madden was a beast!

Madden was pretty good but the defense was the heart and soul of that team....ehhem. At least that's what I've heard.

This is a good team and an excellent coaching staff. They will continue to improve as the season progresses. I expect the colonels will surprise many people. Regardless, Eddie was a perfect hire and I don't think it will take very long for that to be determined. I did receive several texts from fellow alums after the game saying, "fire Eviston...he hasn't even won a game since he took over the program!" All of which were in good fun and people have realistic expectations. Rome wasn't built in a day. It will take a little time to restore the program.

But isn't there a big difference in going for it when confident and onside kicking the ball in some situations (albeit with greater frequency)...and saying "we don't punt" and "we only onside kick?"

I think if the colonels play unintimidated, play hard, and the way they are coached, this will be a good experience for them. Hopefully everyone makes it out injury free. I don't think it really matters what the score is.
