Discussion of refs favoring CCH, dirty play and specifically calling a single player dirty is nauseating.
Out of town refs last night, but now of course, the theory is that their statewide success gets them all the calls.
Bologna.
So tired of it. If you don’t like em, beat em.
The Golden Boys get favored, period, no matter who they play.
-
If the behavior changes, the expectations will change! May take some time but it will happen.
I’d like to agree.
-
So what makes you think officials "have it in" for Newport, as you're seeming to imply?
I would like you to show me how much interaction have these officials from Louisville have ever had with Newport HS sports in order to even remotely substantiate your argument that the officials were intentionally picking on Newport, as officials have done for "years" in "any sport".
Ask anybody who grew up and went to Newport.
-
There’s a counter to that .. maybe a pattern of mouthiness prevents the turn your head/cover your eyes moments from the refs.
I won’t disagree, but people expect it and are looking for it before the game even starts. It’s been this way for years. When I played it was this way. Even folks before me will tell you.
-
Agree, but the ref who called it was behind the play and had roughly the same angle as myself. I didn’t see the left arm extend from my angle. All I saw is the dribble between the legs and the CCh defender fall down.
He broke the kids ankles and made him look bad so it HAD to be a foul. Plus you can’t do those things to the NKY favorites.
-
Look at the additional part of my post, unless he said the magic word, I for sure would have ignored it.
Newport doesn’t get ignored and hasn’t for years, in any sport. But it’s something Newport folks have learned to expect.

Phantom charge, just a snippet of one bad call. Twitter

He had jawed at two CovCath players, bent over, put his hands on his knees on the block, and turned to the CovCath student section said something...with the ref between them and him and actually in perfect position. Surprised you missed that from your perfect position.
So a T for saying something to the student section? Must have been harsh. Joke of a call as were most of the charges. It was expected though, good day.

As a spectator, I am astonished at how people (officials, opponents, etc) put up with CovCaths play. I saw flopping, pushing, shoving, what appeared to be a swing in the pile, getting physical after the ref blew the whistle. I guess they are dominant for a reason. Very physical. In my opinion, Newport did a pretty good job keeping it together, albeit not sure why Harding got the technical, but I assume something was said. Crazy he didn’t play the 4thQ! A senior, in a regional semi-final. What is this rule?? Do other schools have this rule? Why does Newport? Can’t believe this was some sort of life lesson or moral teaching.
I think CovCath beats Beechwood in the championship in a nip tuck, back and forth battle.
I was in perfect position when he got the T, I didn’t see anything said. Could have been under his breath but I couldn’t understand what happened. As for why he sat, a rule was put in place by the school, that if a player received a technical, they must sit the rest of that game. Stupid rule IMO. It is what it is. The Golden Boys won and that’s really all that matters.
-
Let’s not pretend like Thelen and Mayer weren’t getting chippy either folks. Or pretend like Thelen did get away with what looked like a punch in a scrum in the floor. And yes, Harding sat because a rule had been put in, not sure by who, but if a player received a tech he was to sit the remainder of that game.

That was a much different team. Different players, coaches, time.
That’s not the point here.
-
Is the poll so close because people WANT Newport to win? Based on what you have seen, what makes people believe Newport can actually beat CovCath in this environment? This is what CovCath does. Experience.
People said the same thing in 2010 when Newport played Holmes. A 30 point beat down ensued. I’m not saying that’s what’s gonna happen tonight but things do happen.
-
They got beat down by Carolina because they lost Zion 34 secs in and couldn’t function properly. They’ll figure out how to play without him. They lose to VT. Duke is not that great without Zion.
-
I hope Newport watched that video too. That'll get them nice and pumped up to beat the private school defending champs.
You can bet they watched it. They’ll be ready.

Newport has a very real shot here. Most games you know what you’re getting from McGuire, Miller and Harding. When White steps in and starts scoring (their 4th leading scorer at just under 10 ppg) is when things get dangerous. Davis will be their defensive workhorse and do all the little things as he’s done all year. Harding grabbed his 900th rebound for his career in the Conner game and will certainly add more in this one. McGuire didn’t play in their regular season meeting and I really think that was a big factor in the 17 point win for CovCath. These kids are out to prove they belong at the top and I think we finally see that break through tonight. Give me Newport 64-59.
-
You wouldn’t have ever caught me in one of those.
-
Newport also appeared to have shown their support for the Highlands cheerleader’s family by wearing blue socks tonight.
-
White dropped an easy 16 tonight as well. Their matchup with CovCath should be a dandy as Newport will have everyone for this one.
-
I don't think Glider was trying to be offensive in calling them the "Big 3." They do respectfully average 16, 17, 17. I doubt anyone else in the 9th has their 3rd best player averaging 16!
The "Big 3" have been given more hype than any other trio in the area. However, we all know it is a team sport and it takes all 5 to gel in order to be successful!
Very good possibility and I may have just interpreted it wrong.
-
I like this matchup for Conner. I look for the big 3 of Newport to get frustrated and get away from Coach Snapp’s game plan and try to do too much 1 v 1. Conner by 6...61-55.
It’s probably a good thing the “big 3” include 2 other plays in White and Davis in which those are BIG reasons for the success Newport has had. And I can assure they don’t like being called “the big 3”. It’s Newport vs Conner not “the big 3” vs Conner. Newport by 8.

'Last Chance U' coach Jason Brown resigns after text exchange with player
Coach Brown resigns due to an exchange with a player. I guess it catches up with all these guys eventually. Guy could put a winner on the field, but how in the world you allow that to be the face of your program is beyond me.
One of my former players played for him the last 2 years. He said the guy was a nut job.

So District rivals play each other right out of the gate in the playoffs?
Why play at all in the regular season if you have to turn right around and play them again in Round 1 and 2?
Lol nobody said the people who make these decisions are smart.
-
I also want to hear about that matchup. Anyone?
I missed this one but heard it wasn’t much of either. McGuire and Miller were the stories for Newport.
-
Congrats to Newport. Heard Highlands was up most of the game, but that Miller & McGuire had excellent nights for the Wildcats.
Newport didn’t lead til mid 4th quarter.

Oh well. 20-0 free throw advantage second half. Good day.
