  1. I would like to hear some feedback from BGP'ers on the importance of middle school football? Boone does not have a middle school program, my sources close to the program say that there is not enough resources to have a team. Does this put Boone behind the 8 ball even more? Most schools have gone to this format, it gives them a chance to learn an abbreviated system that they will run in high school.

Love or hate the Bluebirds, you have to respect them and their success. The Ft Thomas youth program runs a very condensed version of what they see in the future. I was at the Boone/Highlands game when Towles was a senior, they won 50-0 that night. I was most impressed with all the players on HHS knowing their roll, everyone of them had those miniature playbooks on their arms, everyone was on the same page. During change of posessions, HHS came on and off the field as a unit, Boone seem to be overwhelmed and never really had a chance.

I do not believe you can teach that kind of execution in one summer to kids. This is just another disadvantage the Boone kids have to overcome.

  2. Correct me if I'm wrong because you might know, but how many high schools did he end up playing for? I could have swore he also bounced between the three "River City" schools.....Bellevue, Dayton, & Newport.

Had he been able to stay away from drugs, we would have seen him, without question, playing on a Major D1 team, (Duke, Maryland, etc.)

I remember 8th grade varsity at Dayton, 9th grade varsity at Newport, then 10th grade back to Dayton, but my memory gets a little fuzzy from there.

  3. The cubbard is a little bare, I hope that I am wrong, I have friends whose kids are on the team. You feel for the coach who moved his family up here from a winning program, then gets shut out and his kid gets hurt. Enrollment and demographics play a huge roll in the success of a program. I was in a debate on another thread last week on this topic. Simon Kenton has benefited from population growth in Independence, Lloyd and Boone have been affected from mature neighborhoods.

Boone County's population has exploded in the last 20 plus years, but look at where Boone drew from pre-Ryle and Walton Verona did not play football. They rarely had kids going both ways and they had special team players that would of started on most clubs. Scott County is now the Boone of the 80's and 90's, no other county schools to compete against them.

  4. How tall was the late "Tigger" Brooks???? You could list him at Dayton, Bellevue, & Newport, I'm pretty sure he had stops at all 3 high schools in the mid 80's.

The kid could "flat-out" play, unfortunately drugs consumed his life before he reached his ultimate potential. 2 years ago at his funeral on display were recruiting letters from Maryland's Lefty Driesell and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, among others.

I am not sure how tall Tigger was but you are correct when you say he could flat out play. I believe he was 2 years older than me, I remember playing Jr. Pro ball with him at the American Legion in Newport. He was a man among boys, throwing it down as a 7th grader. It is ashame how it ended.

  5. NCC Press Release:

NCCHS will be awarding the Coach Jim Connor Award to Mr. Ralph Meyer. The Coach Jim Connor Award is an award being given to Mr. Meyer for exemplifying the ideals and traditions of Newport Central Catholic and for the excellence he has achieved in his work and his personal life. In addition, the Fr. John Hegenauer Community Service Award will be given to Mr. Roger Wagenlander, for his commitment to Newport Central Catholic and to the family values NCCHS strives to impart to its students.

All proceeds from the event directly support the athletic programs at Newport Central Catholic.

There are a lot of great names on that NCC list. I would just like to point out Mr. Shea for his contributions to NKY as a player, coach, teacher, father and mentor. You will not find a better person, I had the honor of playing baseball for him 35 years ago, then he was my son's golf coach last year. Mr. Shea is a very humble man that has contributed to the NCC and St. Henry/Erlanger community his entire life. He has four wonderful children who all were excellant athletes. You will never find a bigger Fighting Irish fan. Mr. Shea was a major influence in my upbringing and many others that he has touched. I am very happy NCC is giving him this day of recognition!
