  1. One issue with the NKU talk is the numbers game...

NKU has McDonald, Garnett, Williams, Holland, Faulkner, Gillis, Walton, Garrett, Maxwell, Tate, and Cobb all returning. I know they've got the big kid from Graves, Vogt, coming in next season. Not sure if they already have anyone else or not.

I would assume Brannen has the Spellman scholarship available. I haven't heard if he intends to use it this year or not. Perhaps there are some unsigned kids (juco?) who now have NKU on their radar based on recent success.

Makes sense to use that scholarship to help balance out the classes.

  2. A second motion that this is ridiculous. Not sure why you also say "especially at NKU." The Norse need any strong-willed/determined help they can get.

Let's not forget that NKU already has a 6'1" guard who scored 36.6 points per game in high school, can get to the rim at will, and is an absolute bucket filler. But IMO, his time is limited on the court because he is still learning to guard at the D1 level.

I'm quite confident John Brannen knows who Jake Ohmer is, and has not offered. And as @TAC said, what Jake has produced the last two weeks is what he has been doing for several years. But the success of the the Norse the last two weeks also allows Brannen to cast his net a little wider, and in much deeper water. justsayin

  3. That's ridiculous. Aaron Craft was the best defender in the Big Ten for 4 years at Oho State and he might be an inch taller than Jake. Plenty of short guys out there that play incredible defense. With the tenacity that Jake has, his defense would be the least of my worries as a D1 coach. Seems like one of those kids that all you have to do is tell him "You Can't" and he'll prove to you that he can.

Whoa now! Aaron Craft was a 4-star recruit, and has dipped his toes in the NBA pool. Let's not get too far out over our skis.

  4. Very impressive run. Truly legendary.

Where I have to put the brakes on the D1 discussion, though, and especially at NKU, is he's still 6'1", and has to play on the other side of the court. If you score 40, but the guy you're guarding scores 41, you're hurting the team. justsayin

  5. Their best player (Hayes) got hurt with 5 minutes left in the first half, and never returned.

I have no clue if Clemson is any good. They did have about a dozen losses in single digits, many to top 20 teams in the ACC. That said, a quality win on the road for the Grizzlies. Best team I saw in the Horizon this season.

  6. Sadly, when the NKU men arrived back on campus today, there was nobody to greet them except for a handful of cops (at least one of which was their bus escort), some trainers and some doormen. Spring break did make parking at NKU a lot easier today, though.

I didn't even realize what was going on until I saw some player I did not totally recognize (thought it was Holland) lugging what appeared to be the championship trophy in the arena door.

Looked like a heroes welcome to me .... justsayin

  7. It's so cool they made the Big Dance in their first year of eligibility. To put it in perspective, Northwestern made it into the tourney this year for the first time in their schools history and they've been around forever which would include every year the NCAA tournament was a tournament.

I do have to admit after watching them last night, yikes, their first dance could be an ugly one lol.

Last night was not indicative of how this team plays. They normally play about 9 guys, and all get significant minutes, and there's little drop off. Last night, both teams went down fighting with their best five guys, and they were gassed.

Williams played 35 minutes (averages 24/game); I doubt there's been a game all year he's played 30. Murray played 36, averages 28. And it was their third game in 3 games. Heavy legs. Brannen "danced with the girl he brung". Not sure he subbed the last eight minutes. Kudos.

That said, they're not beating UK/UL, but they play crisper than what you saw.

  8. Motor City Madness is the right name for this :#9 beats #1, #10 beats #2. Milwaukee had only won 8 games all year, with a ton of transfers etc. Crazy thing is they had one win vs NKU and had NKU down by like 18 on the road and a 27-4 run by NKU pulled out the game. This will most likely bet a crazy game. Hopefully for the Norse, their depth will be a major factor.

I forgot about that! That was a great atmosphere when they made that run.

Norse have their work cut out for them tonight. Not an easy task, but one they're up to.

  9. Jake's missed gimmes weren't as concerning as some of the others. His moves with his back to the basket were VERY strong, unfortunately some just rolled out. He had quite a few more opportunities, but chose to pass it out........why????? Coaches directive or lost confidence......?????, either way his game has improved this season and I'd be willing to bet he improves greatly over the summer.

    This.

Got the ball several times at the block, made a nice turn to the basket, only to throw it out to the line. Puzzling.

I'm not as hard on him as several are. I think it's obvious that he is told to "cause no harm". He certainly is not a point of emphasis, but that's probably more a result of stellar options in CVH and CJ.

Entire team had more of a "play not to lose" than a "play to win" mentality. Very deliberate.

  10. Adam Kunkel was special. He deserves credit for being the best player on the floor.

The 3 by McNeil when it it was 11-1 was an important basket, considering the time and score. Settled the Jags, and (who knew) started a 50-27 run (let that sink in). The 3's by Hendrix and Runion to end the third were daggers.

Congratulations to the Jags. Very poised group. As mentioned by many, they have a chance to go deep.
