You have to beat the best to win it. So what if it is game 1, 2, 3 or 4. I think there could be an argument made that you would want to play the best team possible in game 1. That gives you time to game plan and prepare for possibly your toughest opponent. And your team will be at it's best energy level.

I agree it would be hard to do. We would have the same problem the BCS has. The big problem I really have with our state tourney is that a team could draw the last game on Thursday night and come back Friday night, Saturday morning and then Saturday night. That may have been an okay format for 60 years ago when the game was much slower paced. I would like to see the championship game moved to Sunday. Your thoughts??

How else would you go about drawing for the tournament?

I'll never understand it. They seed the districts and make it so a district loser plays a district winner in the regionals and do a blind draw in the state. I understand it gives lesser teams a fair chance to advance but what about the real basketball fans who want to see the 2 best teams in the finals, not meeting in a quarterfinal or semi.

Lets be careful here. According to the powerful Atari computers being used in Louisville and Lexington Holmes is not ranked number 1 and never has this year. A team that Holmes beat and a powerhouse from somewhere in KY is ranked higher than Holmes. Holmes needs to beat Cooper by around 90 points because showing up weaker competition is obviously criteria #1 in the rating systems Litkenhous and Mr. Cantrall use.

This will never happen because Henley has too much class and respect for Tim Sullivan to do that.

I did a little research on the Largo team in MaxPreps. If you look at their roster for 2007-2008 they had 11 seniors and 6 juniors. For 2008-2009 they have 11 seniors and 2 juniors. 1 junior from last year is no longer on the team and they have have 6 seniors that were not on the roster last year as juniors. That tells me that this school had a lot of movement onto it's team from last year. Do you think this is common for that school? What are your thoughts?

I watched the game on the internet and I heard the announcer say that Largo lost 10 players from last year's team but is loaded with seniors again this year. Does that mean they have a lot of turnover? I can't imagine losing that many players and having that many juniors returning. Does anyone have any information on the type of school they are? ...more like a prep school??

Tim Sullivan played @ Holmes under Mike Flynn and Tim Riley was an assistant coach there. Coach Riley was completely in charge of the defense at that time before heading to Warren Central. Tim played point guard @ Brescia College in Owensboro. He graduated from there and briefly coached @ Brescia after graduation. He went into the business world but decided he wanted to teach and coach instead. He coached under Jeff Trame @ Holy Cross before taking the St Patrick head coaching job for one year in the 10th region. He accepted an assistant coaching position @ Mason County hoping he could get a shot at the head coaching job down the road. When a spot opened up for him @ Holmes he decided he wanted to coach back near his home in the 9th region. Cooper High started up and he landed the head coaching position there.

A good young coach to watch over the next few years is Tim Sullivan @ Cooper. Give him a few years to build the program and I believe he will start producing very competitive teams. He has gotten many of his coaching philosophies from coaching with some of the best programs in the state @ Mason Co. and Holmes and incorporates some tough defensive ideas that he got from coach Riley @ Warren Central. Keep an eye on him, he knows what it takes to win, is great with the kids and kids want to play for him.

Once again I will state that I rarely post on this site as I do not see enough of the games in the state to form a solid opinion on the teams. I prefer to sit back and enjoy everyone else's discussions and get a laugh here and there. Rankings mean nothing!! Probably the most important day of the high school basketball year is the day the pairings are decided for the state tournament. While I still believe the Ky High School Sweet 16 is the greatest sporting event on earth there is a lot of luck involved in winning it. Every coach in the state that feels he has a chance to win the state championship dreams of drawing that 1st game on Wednesday afternoon regardless of the opponent. Go back and do some research on how many teams have played the last game of the 1st round and gone on to win the championship. Mason Co did it last year. Realize that it means winning 4 games in approx. 48 hours. How tough is that on 16-17-18 year old kids? Does anyone remember the 1980 tournament? Remember No. 1 Owensboro vs No. 2 Holmes in the semi-final game on Saturday morning @ 10:00am? Remember that Holmes played a triple overtime game on Friday night against a very good Ashland team. The game wasn't over until around 11:30 and the Holmes team never got back to their hotel and in bed until around 3:00am. The much anticipated matchup between Holmes and Owensboro never was a game. The Holmes players couldn't run, jump or do any of the things they displayed throughout the season. So just remember it doesn't make any difference where teams are ranked. Those who make it out of very tough regionals such as the 6th, 7th, 9th and 11th usually are will be ready for any takers but will need a little luck. That luck is helped tremendously on the day they set the pairings. Good luck to all teams and keep up the good posts.

Yes they will fill the gym with 4th, 5th and 6th graders running all over the place!!! That's the reason you can never get into the gym in Latonia to see a varsity game. That is the highlight of the week for the "Real" underclassmen at HC.

Think about it. Litkenhous is all about how bad you beat your opponent. That's what the rating system is based on. If you win games and blow teams out you will have a higher rating than if you win and play close games.

As a new member of the Bluegrass forum I can tell you that you all need to appreciate what you have with this Holmes team whether or not you are a fan of the "Dogs" or not. This team can and will probably be something special come March. Of course there is always the possibility that depth, injuries, internal problems, eligibility and the likes could slow them down. They will also have a bullseye on them every week when they take the floor. That comes with the territory. I have been around and seen the great teams in the 9th region all the way back to the mid 60s and I can tell you there are always going to be bumps in the road. There have only been 2 teams in the history of the 9th region go undefeated against the 9th; Holmes 1978 and the CCH team from a few years ago, (sorry can't remember the year). The 9th region is and always has been one of the toughest in the state. Games like tonight only tend to make teams stronger. I would hate to be in Henderson County's shoes on Tuesday. It could be ugly!!!! If I were David Henley games like this would make me very happy as I could use it to motivate a team that is clearly heads above its competition on most every night it takes the court and clearly feels they are the best in the state. They read and hear the same things you guys are reading and hearing every day. Nothing like a slap of reality to make you realize that you are not as invinceable as you think you are. Like I said enjoy the ride, it could be a very nice one and could result in the only 9th region state championship since 1984. That's way too long to wait for a second.
