  1. Actually there will be a radio broadcast tonight if you want to do updates?

1050 AM will be doing the game at 5:30, and I believe is now doing all of Holmes' games? They did the game last night as well and there is a 1050 "sponsor" banner in the Holmes gym now.

Do they stream on the internet? I am in Fla. and would love to be able to pick up the game and could do updates.

  2. But that disadvantage will turn into an advantage when they play at Rupp as the winner of of the 9/10 will have played a couple of games on it!

Another disadvantage will be the distance behind the baskets to shoot at, but again when they play at Rupp again it will turn into a advantage.

For the players, I just can't see a disadvantage on playing on a college floor prior to playing at Rupp....

All good points. Any thoughts as to what advantages/disadvantages there might be to the various teams that make it to the regional on playing on a bigger court?

  3. I highly doubt she would still go against Holmes just because she went to Holy Cross. IMO i don't think that would come into effect. Also, I don't think she calls it bad just against Holmes. I was at the Connor game and HC game and I think she was pretty bad all around, not just against Holmes. JMO.

Just had to chime in here. Obviously you never went to either Holmes or HC. There is no inbetween with the rivalry between these schools no matter the records of either team!!

  4. Doubtful. Holmes doesn't really have the depth this year to press like they did last year which is why we haven't seen it. I would like to see Henley atleast start out the game pressing though to see how it goes. Maybe he's saving it for later in the season. :sssh:

A lot of coaches will work on new things this time of the year to prepare for the tournaments and don't want to tip their hand too early. I like you would like to see some press thrown at teams at times. Let's hope. I do think they could be effective and feel it could make them even better defensively. It sure could make for exciting dunks!!

  5. Dixie will struggle to score against Holmes athleticism and size. Unless they catch fire from outside, I don't see them scoring more than 42 points. Holmes will have their way with Dixie on the boards which will lead to a lot of second and third chance points. I'd be very surprised to see Dixie keep it within 11 points.

Holmes won't score 80 against Dixie. Henley has too much class to let Holmes beat Dixie that bad. Holmes also doesn't run an uptempo enough offense to score 80 in a game. If they left the starters in the full game, I could see it, but Henley wouldn't allow that.

This raises a good question maybe not in this thread but do you think that coach Henley will employ a full court press at some point in the tournaments? With their length and athleticism I could see this being very effective against a lot of teams leading to some easy breakaway dunks. Your thoughts??

  6. ATM, it is a fact that the comment by a ref, that he or she, would not give Holmes any calls is true. I can name the ref(but I won't!!!) and could probably give you a second. Bad thing about it, they grew up in Covington. As far as the refs any where else in the state, including 10th region refs, will not give(and we don't need them to give us anything) any calls period. I can tell from the Charles Hurt through the net call until today. Is it because of the name,"Holmes",the city,"Covington", I could go on for another reason, but I would like to keep discussing on this site. It is a fact, I am a coach, most of all I am a sports fan, Holmes do not get any calls any where they go. :idunno:

You're right, names are best left out of your posts. It is what it is.

  7. All of the fouls called on Pittman were VERY questionable though and 3 should have been offensive fouls. On two of them he got absolutely bowled over while standing still to take a charge and on the other Nikola threw an elbow at his chest, knocking him on the ground, but the foul was called on Pittman? When Pittman fouled out in OT the refs had came over and said something to both him and O'Conner about talking back and forth and not even 5 seconds later Pittman went up for a rebound and got the stick back but they call a foul on him?

Anyone who has seen Riley knows he NEVER gets in foul trouble which plays even more in to the fact that the refs were absolutely terrible.

You just had to be there to understand where myself and a few others are coming from. I'm sure the Scott fans would agree as well with the calls that went against their team.

It's just a shame that aren't more people willing to get into referreing that have played the game and know what goes on during the heat of the battle. Most of the guys that get certified today clearly never played the game and do it as a part-time job to make a little extra cash. You used to have a solid bunch of veterans and new guys had to earn varsity games by doing the lower levels. I have seen refs today who haven't been around but a few years doing varsity action.

  8. Just got in from the game...and man is my heart still racing. What a game by both teams!

First quarter Holmes came out hot and raced out to an early 6-0 lead but Scott fought back. Rico collided with Riley on a rebound attempt and went out of the game for a few minutes with an ankle/knee injury. While he was out, Scott went on their own 5-0 run to close the game to 6-5. Rico later returned and Holmes then responded with a 8-3 run to close out the quarter and lead 14-8 at the end of one.

Second quarter Scott opened up the quarter on a 7-2 run to close the gap to 17-15. Riley was then fouled by Smith on a 3 point attempt and sank all three free throws to give Holmes a 20-15 edge with 5:35 to go in the quarter. The next few minutes was back and forth with Holmes leading by no more than 3 until Rico drove and found Pittman underneath for a nice two hand dunk to give Holmes a 24-19 lead. Very next possession for Scott Gligorevic came down and bowled over Pittman and instead of calling an offensive foul, they sent Pittman to the bench with 2 fouls. Rico then came down the next possession after Scott sank a free throw and hit a 3 to put Holmes up 27-20. Next possession for Holmes they missed a shot and Smith found Hagfors ahead of everyone for a two hand dunk to give the Eagles a little momentum. Scott scored 7 straight points after Holmes made one of two free throws but an 8 footer by JJ at the buzzer sent Holmes in to the locker room up 30-27 at the half.

Third quarter Pittman scored Holmes first 5 points to give them a 35-30 lead. The refs would then take over. Within the next 30 seconds, both Pittman and Riley were sent to the bench with their 3rd fouls and neither would return until the 4:30 mark of the 4th. Scott would then close to 35-33 but a 6-0 run by Holmes put them back up 41-33. Scott came down and scored on their last possession to close within 41-35 heading in to the final period.

Fourth quarter Scott opened up with a 5-0 run to make the score 41-40 Holmes at the 6:37 mark. Holmes scored 6 straight to take a 47-40 lead but Scott responded by scoring 6 straight to make it 47-46. At the 4:30 mark, Pittman and Riley FINALLY returned. Holmes then went on a 4-0 run including a HUGE two hand put back dunk by Pittman off a missed shot by Rico to give Holmes a 51-46 advantage. Scott, rising to the occasion once again, then scored 4 straight to close within 1, at 51-50. Riley responded in a huge way with a nice drive and bucket to give Holmes a 53-50 lead. Scott then scored on their next possession to set up the rest of the drama. With around 20 seconds left JJ went to the line with Holmes leading 53-52. He made one of two to give Holmes a 54-52 advantage. A Scott player (Smith or Murray) came down and hit a big 3 to give Scott their first lead of the game at 55-54. Holmes then came down the floor and called a timeout with 9.1 seconds left. On the out of bounds play JJ found brother Ricardo under the rim for a monster two hand dunk to give Holmes a 56-55 lead with 0.6 seconds left. The refs then proceeded to go over to the score keeper and put 2.5 seconds on the clock. (HORRIBLE AND WRONG CALL!!) Smith then came down and missed a shot AT THE BUZZER and after the refs saw that he missed blew the whistle to send him to the line shooting two with no time left on the clock. He sank the first but two straight timeouts by Henley froze him and he missed the second to send the game in to OT at 56-56.

In overtime, the refs called Pittman for his 5th foul just 13 seconds in to the quarter, another controversial call that had EVERYONE in the stands screaming. With Holmes leading 58-56 after a pair of Free throws by JJ, Arnold was then called for a technical on the next Scott possession which allowed Scott to tie the game at 58-58 and take the lead at 60-58. As all big time players do though, Rico came down on the next possession and hit a 3 to give Holmes a 61-60 lead. Smith was fouled on the next possession and hit 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game with 1:29 to play. Holmes then hit 3 of 4 free throws to take a 64-61 lead with 49 seconds left. Scott scored on their next possession to close within 1 but Rico sank 1 of 2 free throws on the next possession to give Holmes a 65-63 lead with 29.2 left. Scott came down and missed their tying attempt which led to a long rebound and break away dunk by JJ to seal the deal and give Holmes a 67-63 lead with 2 seconds left. Smith made an uncontested 3 at the buzzer but not enough. Holmes wins 67-66.

It was a very hard fought game by both teams and I was impressed with Scott, especially the play of their PG Smith. He is bigger than the 5'11 that he's listed at and for only being a soph is an absolute stud. I'd say he probably led Scott in scoring and he was very good at penetrating and getting in the lane to find open teammates outside. Keylo (sp?) Jones also had a nice game for Scott. Surprised he doesn't see the floor more.

As for Holmes, they showed a lot of character being able to respond to adversity. Good teams find ways to win and that's exactly what they did today. To play 2 full quarters and OT without Pittman and still win the game while also having Riley on the bench for aleast a full quarter speaks volumes to this teams' character. Foul trouble plagued them the WHOLE GAME. At one point in the third Pittman had 3 fouls, Riley had 3, and Rico had 2. The refs were absolutely horrible both ways and didn't let either team play. A lot of calls against both teams that were terrible. One of the refs looked like a high school kid he was so young and the older gentleman was calling things 20 feet away from him. Very poorly officiated game.

All in all, a very good win for Holmes and this should help them in the long run not to overlook anyone. Give credit to Scott though. They are a tough team and honestly if they play the way they did today, they could come out of the 10th.

    Holmes- 14 16 11 15 11- 67

    Scott- 8 19 8 21 10- 66

very nice update and thanks for letting everyone that couldn't be there know what was going on. Excellent work between you and "Baseballguy" to keep us informed throughout.

  9. This game was nothing less than a small wake up call. There is no one in No. Ky that can stop them. The only team that can stop Holmes  is Holmes.

I hate to even bring this up but if you have watched Holmes play over the years as much as I think you have, you know that the zebras have always made Holmes teams earn everything they get. They traditionally give them no breaks and I have personally had some of them tell me they never will!! They could stop this team from achieving greatness with a few crucial whistles here and there.

  10. Surprised a little, but by no means am I shocked. Yes, Holmes has the the better athletes and experience, but this goes to show, when there is adversity (foul trouble) anything can happen. Also, Brad Carr is one of the best younger Coaches in the State. When you have a Coach as good as him, your going to be in most ball games. And add to that, he played for Holmes. Your always going to have your guys ready to play against your alma mater.

I will not comment on the officiating because I wasn't there, but I know someone who will.:D

Great job updating the game. Being all the way down here in Fla. I really enjoyed the information you provided us all.

  11. Go back and check the scores. There haven't been many championship games that were blowouts.

I have been going to the state tournaments for 40 years and I can tell you that I have seen many uneventful championship games. Games where both teams walked the ball up court with neither team willing to full court press and play hard man-to-man defense. Most teams have resorted to play strictly zone defense because they didn't have the legs to play a man. Once again I say move the championship game to Sunday.
