  1. This is only my 3rd year involved in NKy HS Basketball. If it were to happen, would a Holy Cross win over Holmes in the District be the biggest?:idunno:

In 1979 I believe Beechwood upset Holmes in the opening rouund of the district. This was Dicky Beal's junior year and this Holmes team went 33-3 the next year in 1980 before losing to Owensboro in the state semifinals. Owensboro was ranked # 1 and Holmes # 2 in the state in 1980 but I can't remember how high they were ranked in 1979. I know they were a heavy favorite to win the regions in 1979. Anyone remember this? How about Dawgs81?

  2. Interesting observation from the 9th ratings:

    Holmes 93.0 Highlands 83.1 -9.9

    Holmes beat Highlands by 9.

    Holmes 93.0 Ryle 80.3 -12.7

    Holmes beat Ryle by 14

    Holmes 93.0 Conner 78.6 -14.4

    Holmes beat Conner by 7.

    Holmes 93.0 Beechwood 76.5 -16.5

    Holmes beat Beechwood by 19.

    Holmes 93.0 Covington Catholic 75.0 -18

    Holmes beat Covcath by 19

    Holmes 93.0 Dixie Heights 72.8 -20.2

    Holmes beat Dixie by 23.

    Holmes 93.0 St. Henry 71.9 -21.1

Holmes Beat St. Henry by 18.

I don't really agree with the Lit Ratings but they seem to be within two or three points of being accurate.

That just show you that he bases the ratings on actual point differentials and why teams who can run up the score will benefit in the ratings.

  3. Just got in from the game...wasn't as close as the final might indicate.

First quarter Holmes jumped out to a 10-3 lead after back to back 3's by DJ and Pittman. NCC responded at the other end with a bucket, but a personal 5-0 run by Rico with 2 free throws and a 3 put Holmes up 13-5. At the 2:58 mark Conner came down and hit a 3 to close NCC within 5 at 13-8 but Pittman and JJ hit back to back jumpers to put Holmes up 17-8. NCC then got a basket at the other end but a 3 by Pittman seconds before the end of the first closed out a 7-2 run for Holmes to put then up 20-10 at the end of one. Pittman led all scorers with 8 and I believe Connor had 5 or 6 for NCC.

Second quarter, not much excitement. Holmes started the quarter on an 8-2 run, keyed by a one hand dunk by Housely at the 4:51 mark. NCC responded with another 3 to close within 28-15 after JJ hit a jumper. DJ hit one of two free throws to put Holmes up 29-15 at the 1:03 mark, but NCC, again, responded with a 3 to head in to the lockerroom down 29-18 at the half. Pittman played less than 5 minutes in the second quarter.

Third quarter was back and forth for the first few minutes. Right out of the half Rico got an "and one" to put Holmes up 32-18. NCC went on a 5-0 run after this, including a 3 by Pangallo to put the Breds down by 9 at 32-23. Holmes scored 4 straight to go back up 13 at 36-23, but another 3 by Connor closed NCC to within 10. After this, it'd be all Holmes the rest of the quarter. Pittman knocked down another 3 at the other end and then Holmes got a turnover which led to a break away, J. Johnson dunk to put Holmes up 41-26. Pangallo got a nice up and under at the other end at the 2:56 mark, but that'd be the last points for NCC of the quarter. Pittman then provided a little excitement for all the fans. He got the ball on the baseline out on the arc, head faked, and blew by his man and threw it down hard with one hand over 2 NCC defenders. Riley then hit a 3 at the buzzer to give Holmes a 46-28 lead at the end of 3.

Fourth quarter Holmes started getting a little sloppy and slowed the ball down some after several turnovers which allowed NCC to get back in the game. NCC started the fourth on a 7-2 run to close within 48-35 but a lay up by Riley pushed the lead back up to 15 at 50-35. NCC then went on 9-2 run to close within 9 at 53-44, but Holmes sealed the deal down the stretch at the line to give you the final of 56-44. Holmes started slowing the ball down around the 3 minute mark when they were up 15, but turned it over several times which allowed NCC to make the run that they did to close out the game and make the score more respectable.

For NCC, they shot the ball well from outside. Probably the only reason they kept it close as nobody could really score around the rim, other than Jake Geisler while Pittman was out. Connor, Pangallo, and Meyer all knocked down several big 3's tonight to keep Holmes from turning it in to a blowout. Pangallo is VERY quick with the ball and Connor has a nice stroke from outside. I still don't understand why he doesn't start. IMO he provides much more than the Olberding kid. NCC needs to work on their press breaker though. Other than Pangallo using his quickness to break it himself several times, NCC really struggled against it.

For Holmes, Pittman was the man tonight. I believe he led all scorers with 18 points and that was in probably 20 minutes. He sat out the last 3 minutes of the first quarter, first 3 minutes of second quarter, last 3 minutes of third quarter, and first 3 minutes of 4th quarter. Henley had a great plan as to how to use him tonight. I was glad to finally see Henley use the press more as well. I think that could be a huge advantage for them down the stretch. Worked well against Boone on Tues and gave NCC a lot of problems tonight.

All in all a solid win, but Holmes has to learn to finish better. They should have easily won this by 20+ but with Pittman playing the minutes that he did, I'm sure the Holmes coaching staff is pleased with the W.

Thanks for the update. What kind of press did they run? I have been saying for the last couple of weeks that I felt they could be effective with a press with their length and quickness. Looks like they have been working on it in practice which is good. It gives them another weapon for teams to have to prepare for. I would also bet that coach Henley will throw in some match up zone and maybe even some 1-3-1 with Arnold in the game and maybe Rico on the point. Your thoughts.

  4. I disagree. Charlie Chappie has been one of the worst referees in the 9th region for years. He's dying to make a bigtime call. And that's a horrible trait for a referee to have.

Agreed, Chappie is way past his prime. The only reason he still gets the big games is because he has been refereeing for 34 years and as long as he isn't blackballed by a coach he pretty much gets his pick.

  5. I've read a bunch of criticisms from Ninth Region fans about "that lady ref", who is actually Lori Edgington, a 78 graduate of Holy Cross. I'm not gonna argue about her ability as a referee - although in the conversations I have had with her she has been generally complimentary of Holmes, particularly Rico, in spite of what some posters might perceive.

For reasons that are too complicated to go into, I had an old newspaper article from 1978 where she was mentioned and I thought some BGP'ers might find it interesting - if for no other reason to print out and paste her picture on a voodoo doll. (I thought it was pretty interesting that she scored 28 ppg - she went on to play at UK), but I was surprised to see the Holy Cross girls referred to as "Squaws" - do they still use that?

Lori Edgington could have averaged 50 a game and she would still be a terrible ref. I dare anyone to show me someone who would say she does a good job!!

  6. How much of a difference does the loss of coach Sullivan make? I think they may been out-coached last night and even in the Connor game (although Connor lost). Didn't see the Scott OT game, so I can't comment on that.

You talk to Sully and he will tell you that coach Henley is an excellent coach but if he has a weakness it's that at times he won't reign his players in like maybe he should. IMO he will have a few surprises for teams come tournament time. You don't want to show everything in your bag of tricks too early.

  7. One thing I don't understand is why Holmes allows teams to play so slow against them. Maybe some of the Holmes fans can explain this. They have the athletes to really get after people and press and do some things. I thought they even played way too slow last year in the state championship game vs. Mason Co.

Also, I sure hope Pittman isn't hurt seriously. Hes having an excellent season and itd be a shame for it to either be cut short or for him to even miss 2 or 3 weeks.

I still believe that Holmes will work on some type of press and zone defense in the weeks leading up to the tourney. They just aren't going to show anything in advance so that teams can prepare for it.

  8. Everybody on here has hyped their team to the upmost. That's why we are on here. :ohbrother:

Did you notice that most of the people who have replied to this thread never have anything to say when Holmes wins but they sure jump at the opportunity to bash them when they lose. What does that tell you?? Do a poll of Ky. fans on Duke basketball and see what you get. Most people hate teams like Duke because of what? They win!

  9. to all the "stall ball", whiner posts.

Yeah, Boone wasn't running down and jacking up quick shots, but neither was Holmes. Holmes did nothing to push the pace of the game until about 2-3 minutes to go in the contest when they finally started utilizing their superior athleticism with a full-court trapping defense.

Does Henley even employ an offensive scheme? There were 5-6 possessions on the night where Holmes simply passed the ball around the perimeter for 40+ seconds without making a single pick or cut. Still not sure I ever saw any possessions resembling any type of offensive execution. 90% of their offense was simply penetrating and either taking it up or kicking it out for a shot.

Boone, conversely, had purpose in their halfcourt sets and executed them very well; getting open look after open look on baseline screens and UCLA cuts. Gabbard controlled the ball very well against Holmes' pressure.

Yeah, Boone flourished in the halfcourt game, but they didn't "stall" it anymore than Holmes did- that's a homer excuse. "Stalling" the ball is running the ole Dean Smith 4 corners or just dribble and kicking it out all night while passing on open looks, Boone did none of that.

Boone simply played with poise and out executed Holmes. End of story.

Don't be too quick to write off Mr. Henley. Do you think that 2 weeks prior to the tournament that a coach is going to show things that he may be planning to use when all the marbles are on the line? I believe his record stands for itself and I would not be so sure that he doesn't know what he is doing. If you have followed Holmes the last few weeks you would know that he hasn't been exactly happy with their performance in most of the games. While he doesn't have any direct control over how his players perform he can set the tempo and style of play that he chooses to by the sets he does run. Maybe he is dumb as a fox!!

  10. It's funny though that Holmes loses ONE game and all of a sudden they aren't what they're cracked up to be. Two things to remember...

    1. Last year Holmes lost to Newcath this same week and went on to win 10 straight on their way to the state title game.

    2. Last team to beat Holmes this year, got thumped by 18 in a rematch on their home floor. :sssh:

It is what it is, but Holmes is one of the top 2 teams in the state for a reason. See you at BOK arena in about a month.

Looks to me like all the haters jumped on this thread as fast as they could get home. If I were one of them I wouldn't be to quick to bet the house that Boone could do this again. This is probably the best thing that could happen to Holmes whether or not anyone feels that way or not. I think they will become deadly from here out. Sorry NewCath, Campbell, Simon and Conner!!
