  1. Given some of the alternatives, I think having Hairston back for another year is good for the Reds. Will be interesting to see if he can duplicate is offensive output from last year again this year, or if there'll be a period of "returning to earth". Nonetheless, it gives Cincy some alternatives with him and Keppinger.

As for Baldelli...I'd pass. I'd almost rather take a chance on Andrew Jones (at a bargain basement price, of course) than to lock any significant cash up with Baldelli.

  2. I'm going to take a different look at things and say that football might be the only sport that could survive. I'm basing that on a few things...

    1. You'd be close enough to a major market (Cincinnati) that does have a team...a team that's been mired in mediocrity for the past couple of decades. Fans would be thrilled to be able to support a program that might actually win a few games...or at least have an owner that LOOKS like he wants to win games.

    2. The NFL has the shortest home season. It'd be much easier to sell out a 60,000 stadium for 8 games than it would be to even come close to capacity crowds for a 40,000 seat baseball stadium for 81 games. And given the location, you might be able to pick up a lot of the nearby visitors' fans (Pittsburgh, Indy, Nashville, etc.) that would come to the game, because they can't get tickets to their own home games.

    3. Baseball season is too long. And if your team is at the bottom of the standings, attendance is likely to drop off...fast.

    4. As has already been stated, this area is high on college basketball. While having a chance to see Kobe or Lebron sounds nice, it's not going to happen every night. And with the season coinciding with UK and UofL...it'd become the ugly stepsister of sports.

    5. Hockey? Do I really need to say anything on this?

So, IF there's a pro sports that could survive in Kentucky, it'd likely be an NFL franchise. At least IMO.

  3. I think if we are going to say the Big XII is overrated then we can make a case for SEC being overrated as well.

Taking that into consideration, I think there's a lot of time when people put too much stock into one game. The highs are always too high and the lows are usually too low.

After USC beat down OSU early in the season, everybody was predicting that the Trojans would certainly play for the national championship. And yet they aren't. And when Florida got beat during the regular season, most people thought that killed their chances. And yet, obviously things changed.

Picking teams from the middle of the pack and playing them against each other really doesn't determine anything. If Oklahoma beats Florida, I don't know that you can really say the Bix IX is better than the SEC - it just means Oklahoma is better than Florida. JMO

  4. 2007, 2008. 2009 UK 3-0 In bowl games

    tOSU 0-3...life is good.

If that's what makes you happy, then I'm glad for you. Although I've gotta say that if it takes beating (barely) East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl to make your season, then your season wasn't very good to begin with.

And really, if you look at last year's squad - to barely beat a Florida State team that 30+ players out - the Music City Bowl wasn't that impressive of a win either.

Bottom line is, expectations for UK football are nowhere near what they are for Ohio State. And while there will be detractors out there that say the Buckeyes "choked" in the big games - at least they earned the right to play in them in the first place. You can't win the National Championship unless you're playing in the National Championship game. I'd rather play in the big games (even if there's a chance of getting beat by a great team), than be satisfied by accepting an invitation to one of the leftover bowls.

This was a great game between two very good teams. Texas probably was a better team going in, so kudos to the Buckeyes for hanging with them. Yes, it hurts to lose once you have the lead so late in the game. But considering that a lot of people said Texas would hang 60 on OSU, I think the Bucks showed why they are a top-10 team.

  5. She plays hard & knows how to position herself on the floor to pull down those rebounds in spite of being outsized in a lot of games. Positioning is everything & she's got it!

Absolutely! Sometimes rebounding figures can be misleading, depending on who is doing the counting and what they consider a rebound. However, that being said, from what I have seen, Tori is not afraid to get in there and get the ball and is very much worthy of her numbers. It was great watching her and Workman do battle down in the paint. That could be an interesting matchup for the next couple of years. Hard to believe both are just sophomores this year!

  6. Good ballgame. Grant jumped out to an early lead, but Lady Demons were able to answer. Score tied at the end of the first, second and third quarters, as neither team able to pull away.

In the fourth, W-town got some big buckets by Stith, West and Melissa Snow. Grant with not enough time left to come back. Still, Lockard was a monster down inside for them.

Great effort by both squads! Congrats to Coach Wilhoit and the Lady Demons on their win. I think it'll be a great rematch in Dry Ridge at the end of the month.

  7. Maybe it wasn't, I don't know. It just seems that Gallatin gets away with pretty much mugging the ball handlers in their press. They look like fire ants attacking a dead animal. So much contact is made and they very rarely get whistled for it. And when they do get a foul called Jones can't beleive it. It's intimidating to the officials and he usually gets a make-up call shortly thereafter. That's my take on it anyway.

Not saying this wasn't the case here...as I didn't see the game. But, it's something that goes on all over the place. The "best" that I've seen at "working" the officials and getting "favorable" calls (or no-calls) is Billy Hicks at Scott County. Their press can involve a lot of contact that is never whistled. So, you can't tell me some of those officials aren't intimidated by his "antics". Can't say that it's right or wrong, it's just the way it is. And Jon Jones is not alone in trying to do what he can to get a "W" for his team.

  8. ????????? These teams are very evenly matched. I don't know where you are coming from B-man.

I would agree. Only minor things have to change for this outcome to go the other way.

The coach has very little control over foul trouble to key players, and she certainly has no control over injuries. Is it hard to imagine that if Jones is 100% healthy, that she contributes just 1 more point in regulation? If so, then Gallatin wins the game and we're not having this conversation.

I think this was a case of two fairly, evenly-matched opponents, who are neighboring arch-rivals going to battle. To say that Carroll wasn't expecting to be able to compete in this one...especially at home...is a little far-fetched.

  9. I would say the biggest disappointment is OC, Owen .

I don't know if I would go that far. The Lady Rebels two losses are by a combined 3 points. But, counter with wins over Williamstown and Carroll.

They lost their opener to Grant on pretty much a last second shot, when the Lady Rebels couldn't buy a 3. Their other loss was AT Henry County, which is always a "different" place to play...especially for the younger kids.

BTW - I think Rhianna Gayheart could be the real deal by the time she reaches her Jr. and Sr. years. I've liked what I've seen from her as a freshman. Don't know if she'll reach Katie Smith status at OC...but you never know!

I think if everything goes right in the upcoming tournament, OC could play Gallatin in the finals (?) Should be an interesting matchup, as Carroll and Gallatin went OT earlier this week.

  10. Ohio State will have to stop Ringer, and it won't be an easy thing to do..I like the Bucks if Pryor can get things going early with his feet and open up the passing game. I like Ohio State, 24-20..

If the Bucks can start stretching the field vertically, then that will make Beanie and Pryor even more devastating. However, I don't think they're at this point just yet. And I really hope they were playing "down" to the level of competition last week against Purdue. If not, could be a long day....

  11. If you're voting on this poll, it's hard to justify not dropping them that far when they gave up 51 points.

I agree. If Ohio State got dropped 8 spots by getting blown out by a team ranked HIGHER than them...then I have no problem with LSU getting dropped 10 by getting destroyed by a team ranked LOWER than them.

Unfortunately for Tiger fans...LSU is probably not as bad as they looked in this one, and likewise, Florida may not be as good (especially since they've already gotten beat!). It just happened to be "one of those nights".

  12. Both are obviously passionate about their sports. However, that being said, Corso comes off (at least some of the time) as being closer to "normal". Vitale's antics come off as more of an act IMO. It's not that he doesn't believe what he's saying, it's just that this persona comes out when the lights come on.

I think Corso and Herbstreit work great together.

  13. TJ will always find a way to get open because he doesn't run the fly route like a Chris Chambers catch a TD and call it a day.

TD goes over the middle and is awesome in the slot. A lot of teams use the Cover 2 D, the best way to beat the Cover 2 is going across the middle into linebacker coverage. Chad is not getting many double teams this year, he might have the #1 corner on him but they aren't scared of him this year.

TJ would be just as effective with Chris Henry at the #1 receiver.

The biggest difference in going to San Fran is that TJ wouldn't have Carson Palmer throwing him the ball.

Yes, the "called" routes could be exactly the same...and he could face the same types of defense. But, those routes that TJ "improvises" (and Carson recognizes) are the ones that would be missing.

I think it would take a year or two before TJ could even hope of returning to those types of numbers he posted last year.

  14. Beanie Wells makes this Ohio State bunch a completely different team, him and Pryor both in the backfield is something special, IMO much more dangerous than the Pat White/Slaton duo. Wells is just so powerful, the stiff arm he put on that guy looked so easy and it seemed like it didn't phase him.

I agree that having both in the backfield is a real treat. That being said, I'm a little hesitant about the White/Slaton comparison. I'd definitely take Beanie over Slaton...but, at this point in time, I don't think Pryor is quite up to White's "standards". Don't get me wrong, both can flat out run the ball. However, I think White looks a little more confident when throwing it. But, I think that will change with time, as Pryor gets more experience. And if that happens this year...then things will really be tough for defenses!

Hopefully, a couple of those passes against the Badgers are a sign of more things to come!

  15. I saw Scott play against Walton, but don't know if much could be taken from that. I will say, if Grant approaches the game the same way they appeared to do against South Oldham...the Eagles better watch out.

My biggest fear is that the Braves "rest on their laurels" in this one, and get their lunch handed to them. If they can duplicate their effort from last week though, it could be the turning point in the program.

  16. All these years later and I am still working on this stuff. It is 8:00 Thursday night and I am editing audio for tomorrow night's broadcast that has been sent to me.

Ahhhh...the days of working HOURS on a project that turns out to be MINUTES (if not SECONDS!!) in length...and only airs ONCE!!!! Gotta love your job and take pride in your work to do that.

    Keep the faith! :thumb::thumb:

  17. Well put, Mr. Network. :thumb:

:thumb: Couldn't agree more. My only other pet-peeve that hasn't been mentioned are the announcers who misuse "up" and "down" with regards to plays and field position.

Was always told to think of the field as a hill (with the 50 yard line being the crest). When you're on your side of midfield...with any positive play you were moving "up". (As in "Granger takes the pitch, turns the corner and gets all the way UP to the 42 before he's pushed out of bounds.") However, once you cross midfield (into your opponents territory)...any positive play moves you "down" the field.

Just a small thing I know...but still irks me when I hear it misused.

  18. I'd buy the bolded if he hadn't squandered 20 seconds at the end of the game, which gave the Bengals no alternative except a field goal. So, to be correct, this year he lead a drive that should have tied the game, and it did. If he'd have been more efficient with his time, the Bengals could have had one, possibly two, plays from the 5-yard line to win the game.

As it was, he wasted twenty seconds so Graham could kick an XP instead of a 40 yarder.

Not defending him, nor attacking him...but here's what I understood of the situation. After the completed pass with about 24 seconds left, they were going to spike the ball to stop the clock. The only thing was, they hadn't made the first down, so spiking the ball would have brought up 4th down.

So, Carson was told (via the headset in the helmet) to run a certain play. It just took time to get all the personnel in the right spot, and the play relayed to them. Then they get it down inside the 5, there's not enough time to run any additional plays before having to kick the FG.

My question would be...shouldn't the offensive coordinator have planned for that exact possibility and had a play called beforehand, on second down? Or don't you go ahead and use that last time out, know that you can always spike the ball later (after you have a 1st down) to stop the clock and send your field goal kicker out there???
