  1. I guess only a couple of people on here were right. Oh yeah I was one of them!

Yes you were. It was a pretty ugly game (performance-wise) for both teams, and could be debatable about whether either team deserved to win.

Williamson came up big for GC in the 3rd quarter. Helped them build a lead they never gave up.

Thought Williamstown might be able to sneak their way back into it inside the final minute or so. A couple of questionable foul calls gave the Demons a chance to get back in it from the free throw line. But, they couldn't close the deal.

In the end, a game the Demons will try to forget about, heading into the All-A. And for Gallatin, a game that gives them a little confidence playing without Maddox. (Although he DID dress and go through warmups! Amazing!!)

  2. The draw had to be the worst for Carroll, Owen, and W-town. It happens sometimes and you have to deal with it.

Yeah, your right, you do. You just hate to see quality teams eliminated in early rounds (of any tournament) because of a blind draw. At least by having the district seeded, there's a chance to overcome that. I wish there was someway the All-A could correct that too.

  3. Tebow, Bradford, McCoy!!! WOW!!! Don't every remember all the heismen finalists coming back!

Makes me wonder if all 3 finish at the top again next year, if McCoy wins it because of the fact that the other two have already won it. Now if somebody drastically distances themselves from the others that's one thing. But, if they're all pretty close...I wonder if the voters will be willing to give "Archie Griffin status" to one of the others.

  4. What I really wanted to bring to the forefront with this thread is that there is a lot that goes into preparing a schedule - timing, previous committments, district requirements, fan appeal, team preparation, team morale.

When the casual fan and parent compare teams based on their "weak" or "strong" schedule, they should remember these factors.

My guess would be there are between 4-6 games a year that are "individually scheduled" (perhaps on a two year basis) that can make/break a strong/weak schedule. A school that schedules a team like Covington Latin will likely be looked at having a "softer" schedule than one that might schedule a Shelby County type of team. (No offense to any schools! Just trying to give an example!)

But, yes, to the casual fan...there are a lot of reasons why your team is playing the schedule they have. Some may be obvious...some may not. But, for most schools, there's a majority of games that you're "expected" to play, for whatever reason. You really have to take a serious look at the rest to get a true understanding.

  5. At the beginning of the year, I would have said Gallatin wins this, maybe even easily. However, Williamstown is playing with a ton of confidence. After two years of getting their brains beat in, these kids are finally learning how to win. They're only going to get more dangerous as the season progresses.

As for Gallatin County, I like Coach Jones and the job he does. Still, there's only so much you can do to work around injuries to your star players. I don't know exactly what Maddox's status is (there's some saying he'll be back real soon)...but I would imagine any timetable would be aimed more at the All-A next week, than the Williamstown game this week.

That being said, I think Williamstown wins this by 7.

  6. Looks like Owen County's big men didn't slow the team down too much as predicted.:ylsuper:

They were a force down inside almost immediately. Bet they had 3 or 4 blocks in the first two minutes. Grant became very hesitant to take much inside after that.

Things not all rosey for Owen County though...they missed a ton of free throws, especially in the fourth quarter. And they gave up 9 or 10 three pointers. Will need to play better perimeter defense, and concentrate/execute better from the free throw line. It was a good thing they had the big lead, because it might have cost them in a closer game.

All in all, a very good win for Owen County, and gives Coach Duvall some material to focus on before the All-A next week.

As for Grant County, I don't know if it was Owen's record coming in...or the fact that the Braves next three opponents are Simon Kenton, Shelby County and Oldham County...but they've definitely played better this year.

I know some people will say there's no such thing as a "good loss"...but Coach Kinmon will probably get their attention heading into the last half of the year because of this game.

  7. I argued with Coach Kinmon at Grant over that. I felt like he overed scheduled for years. They had some good talent in the early 2000s but was always just above 500 because he played Scott Co, Lex Cath, Shelby, Oldham, Anderson, and some tough 9th region schools. I always thought that was a little too tough for them.

I'll disagree with you on that. I'd rather go into the district tournament "battle tested" than have an overinflated record against a bunch of cupcakes. I think the quote is something like "To BE the best...you've got to BEAT the best." You have no idea how your team is going to react to tough competition, until they PLAY some tough competition.

  8. Isn't Carrol County an all "a" team and if so this is a very impressive win as I had read on here that the all "a" was wide open. I could see Walton coming out of the all "a" for the 8th region.

The All-A is wide open for the 8th region. Taking out Eminence (who just about everybody has beat)...I think everybody has at least 3 wins against their All-A opponents.

Carroll - over Owen and Gallatin (twice)

Gallatin - over Walton and Henry (twice)

Henry - over Carroll, Trimble, Owen and Walton

Owen - over Carroll, Gallatin, Henry, Trimble & Williamstown

Trimble - over Carroll, Gallatin and Walton

Walton - over Carroll, Trimble and Williamstown

Williamstown - over Carroll, Trimble and Henry

(I did a lot of these from memory, so I apologize if there's a game I missed!)

If that doesn't spell parity, I don't know what does!

  9. A wise man told me once he tried to schedule 4 games per year where he was pretty sure he would get drilled, 4 games he was sure he could win, 4 50/50 games. the rest was usually made up of natural rivalries, conference games, etc.

I would agree with your "wise man". The hard part comes into factoring what you're going to be getting with the "rest" of the schedule. Knowing you're going to be facing a bunch of cupcakes in your conference/district may allow you to bump up elsewhere, and vice versa. But, that's a good starting point.

  10. But the reality is that as a coach he hadn't done a whole lot in the NFL in terms of postseason success outside of that one year where they finally broke through for a title. He finished 9-10 in the postseason as a head coach, and 4 wins came in the Super Bowl season.

There's a lot of coaches/teams that would love to have that type of "disappointment" in the playoffs (hello Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Jets, Raiders, etc.) Fact is, winning a Super Bowl puts you in elite company with the all-time greats. (Lombardi, Walsh, etc.) Not having won it multiple times does not diminish his accomplishments.

Bottom line...his coaching between the lines will always be up for debate...his actions off the field will never be criticized. Sad day for the NFL...they need more guys like him.

  11. OUCH! We need ESPN to start showing FT highlights...maybe the HS kids will start to understand that they're important!

Sad, but true. Williamstown shot 10-23 from the line...and lost to Grant County by 4. Back in the day, if we would have had a performance like this, we'd have been running (a lot) the next day at practice. And when we weren't running, we'd be shooting free throws. Coaches always used to say "They call them FREE throws for a reason!" Hated those days, but got to admit, it made you focus a whole lot more!

  12. The Utah AG just called. All of you are now being sued.

If he (Utah AG) really wants us to include everyone, then I'm going with Mount Union College as my #1 pick. Granted, they're a Division III program, but they have DOMINATED over the past 15 years. The only other school (in any sport) that would be comparable would be John Wooden's UCLA.

Since 1993, Mount Union has won 10 National Championships, and played in two other champsionship games. That's 12 out of the last 16 years they've played for the title!

During that time Larry Kehres has gone 214-8, with 9 undefeated seasons. That's a record that Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Jim Tressell and everybody else would kill for!

  13. 1. USC

    2.Florida

    3.Oklahoma

    4.Texas

    5.Ohio State

I've got no problem with the teams you've got. Might change the order just a bit, depending on how far back you want to go. If it's over the past 5 or 6 years, then I'd go with:

    1. USC

    2. Florida

    3. Texas

    4. Ohio State

    5. Oklahoma

Either way, you're talking about the "big boys" of college football.
