No word on who the refs are. :p

  8. I can't believe no one has mentioned the Lorenzen/Smith combo at Fort Thomas Highlands during the late 1990's. Those were some fun teams to watch at the State Tourney. Two of the strongest 9th Region teams to make it to Lexington recently were the 2003 St. Henry's team that had the misfortune of playing the first game of the entire tourney (a definite disadvantage if your kids haven't been there before) against Mason County, and the 2004 team from Covington Catholic who lost to eventual state champion Warren Central on Saturday morning.

  9. Handicapping the 13th:

Tier 1 - Cumberland, Corbin, South Laurel

Tier 2 - Knox Central, Clay County, Pineville,

Tier 3 - Bell County, Jackson County, Middlesboro

Tier 4 - Cawood, North Laurel

The positions in each are inter-changeable on a given night; but I wouldn't see any team from a given tier win two regional games above their level.

Cumberland presents match-up problems for everyone with Johnson/Wilson, and probably have the most athletically talented team. South Laurel has recent success and a convincing win over Corbin on their side. Corbin is probably most versatile team top to bottom.

Personally, I would least want to play Cumberland in a one-and-done setting. My sleeper pick would be host-Knox Central, especially if they can land a favorable draw. I don't think it's inconcievable that Miller go off and carry the Panthers in a Friday-Saturday double-header, but I don't think Central has been consistent enough to string together the 3-4 quality wins (district final) neccessary.

The draw should be very interesting, especially if the field shaped up with:

    49th - Clay Co. / Jackson Co.

    50th - Corbin / South Laurel

    51st - Knox Central / Pineville

    52nd - Cumberland / Bell Co.

  10. My Top 5:

    1. Mason County, 2. Scott Co., 3. Bryan Station, 4. Lexington Catholic, 5. Holmes,

    My "Sleepers":

Eastern, DeSales, Ballard, Manual, Owensboro, University Heights,

I only throw in UHA on the Hopson factor alone. I could see him showing shades of Barbour during his Saturday run with E-town. Not saying they'll even make it to Rupp, but he definitely has the potential to tear it up, especially on the big stage.
