  1. If drafting a team to compete in Regions 13 - 16 with the players from each respective region, I'd take:

    1st Team:

PG - Justice - Shelby Valley

SG - Zachery - Bell Co.

SF - Hatfield - Shelby Valley

PF - Knipp - Elliott Co.

    C - Jones - Hazard

    2nd Team:

    PG - Whittaker - Hazard

SG - Cox - Knott Central

SF - Fergueson - Elliott Co.

PF - Miller - Knox Central

    C - Adams - Shelby Valley

    3rd Team:

    PG - L. Bryant - Shelby Valley

    SG - Stepp - JBS

    SF - Campbell - Hazard

    PF - Crawford - Corbin

    C - St. John - South Laurel

Just my opinion....... picking a team with the size to compete at the state level was definitely a factor as well.

  2. Off the top of my head for the first 4 Regions:

    1 - Calloway County ?

    2 - Christian County ?

    3 - Apollo ?

    4 - Warren Central ?

    5 - Bardstown

    6 - Pleasure Ridge Park

    7 - Jeffersontown

    8 - Anderson County / Gallatin County

    9 - Holmes

    10 - George Rogers Clark

    11 - Scott County / Lexington Catholic

    12 - McCreary Central / Wayne County

    13 - South Laurel

    14 - Hazard

    15 - Shelby Valley

    16 - Elliott County

  3. Tyshawn Edmonson from University Heights Academy was definitely talented enough to make the cut. Any reason given for him not playing with the All-Stars?

I'm going to try and catch the next scrimmage at Lexington Catholic, but had a few contingencies.

I'm assuming the Morris in the boxscore is Aaron Morris, but didn't know if it was the Muhlenburg North or Madison Central stand-out.

Also, could someone give me a brief of Wilford, Penny, and Sorrell's games? I assume that each of the three can play as well as any of the other individuals (Penny attended the BG Elite Camp), but was wondering about height, position, strengths, and weaknesses at the next level.

  4. I saw Tates Creek play University Heights on their home floor this past season, and was thoroughly impressed with Fucci. He seemed especially collected and mature for his age as well. Is he part of the lineage of Fucci athletes at Tates Creek?

With Breeden coming in next year and a huge student population, Tates Creek could make some noise, but I don't see them being a contender for a few years. As mentioned earlier, finding a dominant post presence would go a long way.

  5. Off the top of my head, if I were picking a competitive team from the 13th, I'd take:

    G - Zachery - Bell Co.

    G - Strange - Pineville

    F - Siedel - North Laurel

    F - Crawford - Corbin

    C - St. John - South Laurel

    6 - Johnson - Corbin

    7 - Smith - Clay Co.

    8- Wilson - Corbin

    9 - Caldwell - Harlan Co. Cen.

    10 - Gilbert - South Laurel

*This is considering Miller is gone to Hazard.

I've only seen alot of these players a hand full of times, so it's only anyone's guess though...

  6. If the argument includes prep schools, I'm definitely selling.

Scott County may be nationally ranked at some points during the season, but there are probably 10 teams in the state of California, Texas, and/or Indiana who would beat Scott Co. consistently.

Top rated team in the state, yes. However, ranking them top 25 nationally when their existence is currently limited to keyboards and paper may be a stretch though.

Keep in mind that Phares, Guyn, Euton, and Jackson's teams weren't in Rupp this past season when placing such high expectations on a young but talented squad.

  7. I'll add:

1998 PRP with King, Paschel, and Griffin. All three of those were major players.

2001 Russellville with Key, Dickerson, Hampton, Morris, etc.

2004 Covington Catholic squad with the Votel twins, Nethseide, Tierney, etc. They lost to Warren Central on Saturday morning. They didn't have as much talent as the other two, but were as fundamentally sound and team oriented as any team I've seen in my past 10 years at Rupp.

This one is someone before my time, but the 1992 Clay County team had beaten both Lexington Catholic and UHA in regular season play before being upset by Catholic on Saturday morning. That team included Shannon Hoskins, Todd Messer, Mark Jason Smith, etc.

  8. Give the rest of the state's field some credit: Paducah Tilghman, UHA, Apollo/Muhlenburg North, Adair County, Covington Catholic/Holmes, Mason County, Corbin/South Laurel, Hazard, Paintsville/Shelby Valley, and Rose Hill have the tradition and experience to knock off anyone on a given night.

Not to mention the fact that plenty of these schools could have the "little guy factor" that really gets the crowd behind them.

The schools named above can compete with any team in the state. Yet, the odds are that plenty of them that would be blown out as well... but that's why they play the game.

Nonetheless, looking at some possibilities for the Sweet 16 field, there's still more overall talent in the Sweet 16 than the 11th or 7th Regionals.

Getting to Rupp requires winning three consecutive games, two of which are most likely intense. Getting to the regional tournament requires winning one game against a school you have most likely played already.

How would schools like Atherton and Model (in the 7th & 11th regional tourney fields in 2008) stack up against the 4 teams ranked lowest in recent state fields? The 7th & 11th are loaded... but not to the extent that they can just show up and win without maximum effort. ;)

  9. Recent history involving Corbin/Clay Co. These are years that each team's seniors would have been in their respective programs. Corbin takes the regular season meeting over Clay @ Clay in an overtime game.

2007 - Corbin beats Clay @ Corbin during the Regular Season:

Corbin loses to South Laurel (finals), Clay Co. to Cumberland (semis)

2006 - Corbin loses to Clay Co. @ Clay during the Regular season.

Regional: Corbin loses to Clay Co. (first round); Clay Co. to Barbourville (semis)

2005 - Corbin loses to Clay Co. @ Corbin during the regular season.

Region: Corbin beats Clay Co. (semis), loses to UHA in Rupp (quarters).
