  1. I don't know what area of the state everyone is from, but some of the statements just give me pause.

I do not claim to be an expert on football in other states, but I have seen my share of football from Ohio, and Virginia. I have seen and played in several games with Raceland playing teams from Ohio and Virginia. I played in a game versus a Virginia team that only lost one game all season, and that was to Raceland. I have seen several games where Raceland has beaten Ohio teams. I have also seen several other teams from North-Eastern Kentucky play and beat Ohio teams.

    As for the Criteria:

Talent - I think Kentucky has a great deal of talent. Maybe not as much as the top states, but I have seen many talented players. Do they all get D1 scholarships? No. And the major reason for that is size. Many of the very talented players do not have the size to play D1.

Atmosphere - I think all in all, most of the venues in Kentucky that I have been to have a great football atmosphere. Not necessarily the best facilities, but a great atmosphere.

Coaching - I have seen and know many great football coaches in the state of Kentucky. Are all the coaches in Kentucky better then all the coaches in Florida? No, but I think most of the coaches in Kentucky could hold their own.

Competitive Balance - I would say that Kentucky could improve here. There are quite a few quality programs in Kentucky in their respective classes, but a cross the board this could improve.

Reputation - this could improve as well, and has somewhat. But, more coaches are coming to recruit in Kentucky then there used to be.

Perhaps my glasses are rose colored, but I do not see the despair in Kentucky football that some of you see. I see large crowds at football games, and small crowds at basketball games. I see schools who are putting a lot of resources at the hands of the coaches to make their programs competitive. I see many schools improving their facilities. I see football becoming bigger in football in Kentucky.

    I'm with you Ram.

Ky has underrated atmosphere, talent and coaching. Incidently, all states have wide ranges in the talent top to bottom. Ky's is more obvious only because there are fewer schools.

I love this debate! There are a lot of great opinions and expertise on this site!:ylsuper:

  2. Having coached in NC, SC, Tn., and Ky at both the HS and College level I would agree. You can say what you want about Independence and Byrnes, but overall speed is greater in NC and SC than what I have seen in Ky. And yes Tn. (even though KY has won a couple of all star games recently) is better, deeper, and faster on an overall basis.

I spoke with a coach buddy of mine this morning that coached in NC, TN and KY and he echoed this sentiment, but he said interior play is better in KY (his exact words were much better, but I think he is over-stating it).

  3. Warren Central (Indiana) is hot and heavy after Coach John Hart who they are meeting with today (for the second time I believe). Coach Hart is the current Coach at Reitz High School in Evansville, IN (2007 4A state champs). Reitz's biggest rival is Castle High School in Newburgh, IN. I believe we all know who the head coach at Caslte was a few years ago. I have read some Rockers on here state they would like to see this match up. Any chance this could happen in the near future?

I would pay to see it!

This could be a great rivalry that gets nat'l attention for Kentucky football.

  4. When I did some work at Lex Cath, they had some concepts.

The thing about the spread is that it really is comprised of aspects of so many other offenses, that a lot of schools have some of the concepts. Raceland has a lot of the quick pass concepts and blocking schemes used in the spread because a lot of those concepts come from the Run and Shoot.

Highlands lined their QB up in the shotgun a couple years back and ran some spread stuff pretty well.

Lafayette made a switch a few years back as well, I believe. Even little Berea Community runs some spread.

  5. Are you serious!! You put Kentucky 4 spots higher then Tennessee?

Tennessee is a top ten state IMO for high school football. Kentucky isn't a top 20.

Also, Indiana has better overall HS football then Kentucky.

Please remeber to take into account all five criteria that I have used. Kentucky is up there.

Indiana is sleeper as well. They have the Friday Night Lights going pretty well for a "basketball state".

  6. For what it is worth, Rivals.com, the leading authority on high school football recruiting has the following number of top notch players named in each state. Kentucky has 10 players named. Other states with more than Kentucky and their number of players include:

    Maryland (20), New Jersey (30), North Carolina (30), Pennsylvania (40), Virginia (30), Alabama (30), Arkansas (15), Florida (100), Georgia (50), Louisiana (30), Mississippi (20), South Carolina (20), Tennessee (15), Illinois (30), Indiana (15), Michigan (30), Ohio (50), Colorado (25), Kansas (20), Missouri (20), Oklahoma (25), Texas (100), Arizona (25), California (100), Nevada (15), and Washington (25).

That totals 26 states with more college prospects than Kentucky as per Rivals. com. There are fifteen other states tied with Kentucky with 10.

I am not claiming to be an expert when compared to Rivals, but I will say this-there is some grade A talent in other states that play for some pretty poor teams. I think it goes back to your Trotwood Madison arguement-great individuals, not a great team.

Kentucky has some solid teams, especially some of the smaller class programs.

Anyway, we are getting away from the aruguement a bit-all five criteria need to be taken into account. Talent is only one of them.

  7. heard only four applied, interviews should start soon.

Is this true? I personally know a GREAT young coach out in Texas that applied and he should definitely get consideration! I told him it is a pipe-dream because I figured the position would be more popular. He is young and firery and could be what the program needs.

  8. I think I'd put Florida over Texas. Sure, Friday Night Lights doesn't overstate football's importance in Texas, but it's my understanding that Florida produces the most as far as football goes. I could very easily be wrong on this.

I think, if you take into account the five criteria listed in the begining of the post, Texas easily trumps everyone (especially on the atmosphere and coaching).

  9. Trotwood Madison was a team of individuals who ran up against a "TEAM" in Fort Thomas Highlands.

Kentucky has always had some good individual players, but overall level of competition is poor.

NOTE: Just as an example, put Maryland ahead of Kentucky. DeMatha High School places more D-I players each year, than the entire state of Kentucky does. Other states ahead of Kentucky, in my opinion.........Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin.

Okay, now we are overstating it a bit. I played in New York...we are not even close because basketball gets the best athletes in the state. I have seen football in Ok., Mz, Ks, Ia, Co, Ut and they are not in there (although each have their great programs like Jenks, Colombine, Union, etc.). I have not seen Oregon but I have had west coast coaching buddies that have agreed that Kentucky could come out west and do quite well.

Incidently, DeMatha plays in DC, not Maryland...neither of which can compete top to bottom with Ky (T, X and Highlands all beat DeMatha this year...I've seen them in person).

    Just my opinion. :thumb:

Hey, give me your list. I want to see where other states shake out!

  10. Pryor can throw...I'll keep reminding folks of that. Kid runs like a deer. The offense, with him at Mich, will look more like what VY did at Texas than what Pat White is doing at WVU. I think Mallet and Pryor would amke a tough 1-2 punch for Big 10 teams to handle.

  11. Maybe it is just foolish pride, but I really believe, having seen both, that Kentucky can hang talent-wise from top to bottom. The small programs in Kentucky can go blow for blow with Tenn. Tenn is top heavy, but any given year Highlands, T and X can compete.

Coaching and atmosphere are pretty even as well.

What about some other lists? I am curious where some states shake out in other people's minds (namely California).

  12. Louisiana is top 10 or very near the top 10.

Katrina has really hurt the atmosphere and talent level over the last couple of years, papi. It is unfortunate. JC and Evangel are always tough, but even they are down. JC got handled in Texas this year. West Monroe was supposed to be the next big thing (ESPN even did a TV show based on the team!) and they got handled in the first round of the state playoffs. It has lead to an upswing in Arkansas football (another underrated state) with kids moving north from Louisianna.

  13. OSU is recruiting him to play QB as far as I know. As a matter of fact if he doesn't sign OSU is already in with an 09 QB like him, not as good as him right now though, from TX.

I have heard otherwise (limited inside knowledge...heard the same thing about Penn St.-that is why I mentioned it).

  14. You think Pat White will play many years of QB in the the NFL? I am saying from an NFL perspective I think it's a mistake. The Vick shock and awe is over...people are starting to remember QB's have to throw.

When was it decided this kid can't throw? I have seen him throw in person this year. He has a big arm!

  15. You tell me... does he want a great college career and try to return punts in the NFL like Dantzler did?

Which gets at my point of why Mich may be the better choice...if the kid wants to play QB, he knows he will have that opportunity with U of M. Ohio St. may want him to switch.

  16. Okay...let's not overstate it. He would not be making a mistake in going to Mich with Coach Rod there running the same offense the kid dominated Penn. with the last 3 years.

My understanding is that he wants to play QB and one of the hang ups with both OSU and Penn St. is they want him as a receiver.

I also have heard he wants to play both football and basketball and Coach Rod would have an in with the B-ball coach and could make this happen (relationship with Beilein from WVU days).

Incidently, if you want to play both Terrelle, I think we could use you here at UK :-)
