I think it has been established that it did not hit the helmet. Mainly by the guy who works with the umpire that got hit. If you can't believe that then there's no convincing you.

I agree with that 100%. Umpires get hit all the time by foul balls and they are just as hard as this was. He's just angry at the catcher, as he should be.

If it was convincing, I wouldnt be the only one saying that the ball didn't hit the helmet. The only thud there is, is when the ball hits the umpire. I've watched the video a good 50 times trying to hear another sound and have yet to hear it.

It's far from plain as day. The batter doesn't react like he has been hit at all, and someone would have noticed it hit the helmet and stood up for the catcher by now. I just dont see how you can say that it clearly hits his helmet.

I guess its good that you're not willing to jump to conclusions, but I think it was pretty obvious that the catcher planned this. Whether the pitcher knew anything about it...we may never know.

Its pretty hard to believe that a catcher would reach up with his glove and then drop to his knees. Even if he was crossed up, he wouldn't have had time to reach up and then realize it was a breaking ball then drop to his knees. People dont have reactions like that. I've caught before and i've been crossed up, expecting a fastball then the pitcher throwing a slider. It's not fun. There's no chance that the catcher would have had time to go to his knees. You really have no chance of catching it. All you can do is stab at it. This was clearly planned.

It may have been a slider, but like i said...it was not a big, looping breaking ball like you said. I do not see the batter getting ready to lean his shoulder in at all. I see him realizing a fastball is up and in and he is shying away from it like anyone would do if a ball is close to their head. And you're going to tell me that the catcher is expecting the ball to break so much that it starts at the guys head and is supposed to end up in the dirt? Please. You can tell right when the a pitcher lets the ball go whether a breaking ball will break or if it is just a spinner...that is if you've played baseball for more than about a year.

It may very well have hit the batters helmet. I'll give you that one (I don't think it does but that is really besides the point). The catcher never comes within a foot of the ball. If you are just reacting you'll put your glove up in the general area. Even if you get crossed up, you still will get close to catching the ball. The catcher clearly had no intention of catching the ball, whether the ball was intended for the umpire or the batter.

It wasn't a big, looping breaking ball at all. If it is anything besides a fastball then it was a sharp breaking slider. Once again the camera angle is fooling everybody.

I'll give you all that this pitch may have nicked the helmet. I still don't think it did, but either way I still think it was intentional. The catcher's glove doesn't come within a foot of the ball. If he was really trying to catch the ball it would have atleast gotten closer than that. Now way that is a mix up in pitches.

I think you all are getting fooled by the camera angle. You're used to watching basically straight on in MLB games, and this is from the side. This would not be as big of a deal if it had hit the helmet. This was a championship game, you have to think that there were tons of people there including state officials. Someone would have stepped up in this kids defense if it had hit the helmet first.

I'm just now seeing any of the signs that you are pointing out. I can't see the helmet move, only hear one noise, and my video quality isn't good enough to see the spin anyway

Even if it did hit the helment, there's going to be a sound loud enough to be heard by the other umpires. Why wasn't it called a dead ball?

I dont see the helmet move. I saw this on CNN earlier today and they said the team was already down by 10 when this happened. Maybe they weren't happy with the umpire.

There wouldn't be such a big deal about this if it had hit the batter first. It would have been a dead ball and the runner wouldn't have been able to advance. You can clearly see the catcher start to reach up and then pretend to block a pitch in the dirt.

You should watch the video again. If someone gets hit with a fastball in the helmet, you'll see some sort of reaction and you don't see that.

From the video, it looks like the pitcher was surprised that it hit the umpire. It would be a lot more telling if we could see his face. But this is one of the more bush league things that I have ever seen and the catcher deserved what he got.

Actually Lexington has 5 teams in the top 10...4 in the top 6. Maybe it just shows you how strong the 11th region and more specifically lexington baseball is.
