I have never applied for a job in my professional career where I did not follow up. If Barth applied and did not follow up, that is a mistake by him. You probably don't know the answer to that. I am saying he needs to follow up if he wants the job. Let that committee know you want the job and want a chance to prove they should hire you.

I don't know but I agree with your assessment with the proviso that when I am looking to hire someone and I know there is a qualified candidate that has not applied I reach as well. Once again, I do not know if this happened and he declined or what.

I have a serious question for you and perhaps you know the answer and perhaps you don’t.  I have been told by several people that he did not apply thus did not interview.  Been told by others he applied but did not get interview.  If he applied and did not get interview I might reach out to administration and make sure they got my application.

I don't know the answer but I wonder if you(Highland search committee, alumni, power brokers) would have reached out to him if you were going to seriously consider him? Did they? I don't have the answer.

I’ve seen the same things and I completely agree with you. Barth is an extremely good coach. He has done an outstanding job at WV. I don’t know how big of fans HHS would be of the wing-t even though it’s the hybrid version.

I understand what you are saying but he adjusts with the talent he has on hand. I think he would adjust to what Highlands has on hand and if that dictated more passing he would.

Do you say that because you don’t think he should get the job because of the record?

No not necessary, but it was funny that people were dismissing Jeff Barth out of hand because his record and credentials were not good enough for Highlands. He is 88-45 in 11 years coaching at the WV.  I don't know Coach Lickert and he seems to be a good coach but if you look at how they stack up together it would seem he(Barth) should be a top candidate. Some I have seen on here have outright dismissed him as unqualified for Highlands head coach. It has been mentioned on here that he was not interviewed. Not sure if that was accurate or not.

Well, this may be the wackiest Highlands coaching thread yet. Not sure what to say about some of the posts above. But, I was looking at Lickert's coaching record the last 10 years and here is what I saw:

    Campbell County

    2011 ..... 4-8

    2012 ..... 7-5

    2013 ..... 8-4

    2014 ..... 6-5

    2015 ..... 1-10

    2016 ..... 4-8

    2017 ..... 7-5

    Newport Central Catholic

    2018 ..... 5-7

    2019 ..... 10-3

    2020 ..... 8-3

    Total: 60-58

This is most interesting to say the least. I am continually amazing by people who think should get this job.

Be interesting to hear the reasons for moving on. Is the school dedicated to rebuilding this program? Are they going to give the support, money and have the patience needed?

It would seem a strange time to make a switch when you are returning to district play in 2021. Brings up a lot questions which you have enumerated.

Considering WV has won the district 7x times in a row, Coach Simmons I believe knew this wasn’t going to be a good matchup in a rebuilding program. Carroll was a thumping but a long-standing rivalry between the two which is why they were on the schedule. Believe Trimble’s last win vs WV was 2008 or 09 and Simmons was on that WV staff.

No one faulted him for the schedule, he believed in his kids and and was preparing them for a future opportunity. Believe given another year he could challenge for a playoff spot but we are talking about 3-5 years before they could actually take a shot at WV. Correct me if I am wrong, Browning at Gallatin is the only coach in the district, whose left, to beat WV?

Yes, he is the only coach left who has beaten WV. I believe that was 2014. They have won the district every year since. I hope that all of the district schools rebound at some point and become competitive again. Carroll County has been the closest with a couple of close games the last couple but backslid in their lopsided playoff loss this year. I am wondering why the change at Trimble County of the head coach? Nothing but crickets on the move. Best of luck to the Raiders.

While I get your point, based on the current schedule it looks like Walton-Verona is the only district team Trimble County wasn't playing. If you're going to play all but one, go ahead and play WV, then schedule competitive opponents in the non-district. Trying to schedule non-district games late in the season is difficult and your options might be limited, which could lead to dispiriting losses. Plus, a win over one district opponent could set up a later district game with playoffs on the line. Even if you know you'll lose the first round game, putting kids in a win-and-you're-in position late in the regular season can build confidence and enthusiasm.

No advantages for WV to play them till they have to.

I wanted to comment on this specific piece.  In 2018, a very good Glasgow team went to Walton Verona for the 3rd week of the playoffs.  I clearly felt Glasgow was the better team by a couple TDs easy.  But Walton Verona won that game 18-14 in a big upset to me.

To win that deep in the playoffs against a team I feel was clearly better than the Bearcats says something to me.  You still have to have the Jimmy's and Joe's to win it all.  But can you win a game your not suppose to with the Willie's and Waylons????

    This comment is spot on.

I think on a dry field West Carter would of had 600 yards of offense. Walton Verona got whipped up front. WV only had 40 yards rushing. I love it that Beachwood has to come to Olive Hill! It will not be comfortable for them. They have a very good team and a dynamic QB. I expect a very good game.

We will never know but I would liked to see that game.

Not sure why they see it as an advantage with Cline being their main weapon. But no matter where this game is played or what the conditions are, both teams play in the same conditions and Beechwood has too much for West Carter.

It is by the way they play on it and have a power run game  with a larger line and Cline knows how to play on it. They throw goes and outs and WV could not keep their footing. I did not give a lot of credence to it until I saw it. I don't think that they will beat Beechwood but I do think that it will be closer than if it is on turf. Walton had not played in the mud all year and it showed. I doubt they had to water the field given the rain and I have no idea if they ever have done that but there was inches of standing water on the field. It will not be in good shape for this game

I just looked at the weather for next week. It isn’t suppose to rain so the field should get dry.

Even if it was Arizona weather and sunny will that field will not be dry. It is a cow pasture and almost completely mud beyond repair this year. They definitely see it as an advantage and will not let it be moved if they can help it. Bring the the long cleats!

The Glasgow win is a good one. I don't buy he has done more with less. Walton has good players, nice facilities, very good school system. It would be nice to see he had at least made a title game appearance. I am not knocking him. I think his resume will be surpassed by others that apply.

Agree to disagree on that point.

Is there any significant success on Barth's resume? Has Walton Verona made even a final four? Maybe once? He is in a weak district and has not had post season success that gets my attention. He has done a good job at WV but I believe there will be candidates with better resumes apply. I would not be excited with Barth if I were a Highlands fan.

Yes, Walton has made it to a final 4 by beating a Glasgow team(This should have peaked your interest) with several D-1 recruits one holding an offer from Alabama. They play this Friday night for a second trip to a state semi final. He has not lost a district game since 2013 and yes it is a weak district but none the less he has dominated it. The argument then is only that his resume is only not good enough not his coaching abilities because he has done more with less than most.

    What is Coach Barth's resume?

Are you asking for his resume or are you making the point his resume is not enough? The point was made twice or three times that he is not a good fit. My question is why is he not according to the people who have said he is not a good fit?

Walton Verona seems to be a lot more up-and-down this year than in previous years.  I don't see them being able to get within a couple of scores of West Carter.

They are, but if they come to come play this year this is a more than winnable game. They got a late start(COVID guidelines) compared to other schools with practicing. The passing game has become more prevalent this year and it took sometime for it to develop. The pieces have been coming together(New coaching staff members, COVID, injuries and practice time). If they can put the effort together that saw them easily handle Louisville Holy Cross and Carroll County last week, they will win this one.
