I have seen both teams play and Beechwoods' defense is not what it was last year. The offense is hitting on all cylinders again but the difference is defense. I lean towards Mayfield with the home field advantage.

Running clock fast.

This team is no where near the team that played at Bishop Brossart. They were thin to start the year and the injury bug bit. They will struggle the rest of the year.
-
Walton, wins comfortably if injuries don't become a factor.

There were 45 players on the 2022 roster with 9 of those players freshmen.
That is to start year. Ended with upper 20's to lower 30's.

With the few bodies they have had it will be a very tough schedule.

I think need to find more players this year, in lower 30's at the end of the season. Traditionally, they are upper 40's and 50's.

I would think they’d at least get paired with Walton, Owen, and Gallatin.
If Trimble goes to 1A that works but if they stay in 2A Beechwood would not be put in their district. The district currently has 6 teams(Walton, Trimble, Shawnee, Owen, Gallatin ,and Carroll) and Beechwood would make 7.

Zulager is a tough solid runner no doubt about it.

If Holy Cross is to do that I can see Walton-Verona moving from District 5 to District 6. District 6 currently has 6 teams and District 5 would be at 3 teams and Walton is as closer to Beechwood, Lloyd, and Newport than Carroll County, Gallatin County, Owen County, Shawnee, and Trimble County.
This could be a possibility but I have heard that Walton-Verona could have numbers to move to 3A.

If I am not mistaken, after Berger went out of the game last week Beechwood outscored Lloyd 21 to nothing. I would say Lloyd is at least 2 touchdowns better than Walton Verona.
Depends on which WV team shows up. The injury depleted roster that has been there for most of the year or one that has it's full compliment back. After this week against Trimble County, and next week a bye week, I would image they have their players back.
-
You cannot lose as many starters as WV has with little depth and not be affected. They were happy to survive and hopefully get the majority of injured back next week or it could be ugly.
-
When WV gets back from injury 2 two way starters things should open up. They are not very deep and need to stay injury free.

Scott JV just dismantled Walton JV 42-0 with not one player either team having cramps. So there’s that.
No depth for Walton.

I was told that Fairdale beat Christian Academy of Louisville in a scrimmage tonight so this one may be closer than originally thought.
I would be surprised if it is. Fairdale and WV battled to a 6-0 contest in a super controlled formatted scrimmage.

Agree or disagree you just answered my question. Thank you. Hopefully, Coach Barth can get the community/player buy in at a higher level and get to the next level. Would love to see another NKY team make a jump.
Agree!

What does it take for WV to take the next step? Each year I hear that Coach Barth has a lot of talent and the future is bright but it never seems to materialize. What needs to happen for WV to make a deep playoff run?
Disagree with this on several levels. First, he went lost to the state champions in the regional finals in 2012 and has got there several more times and with a state semi final in 2018 losing to Mayfield. He just does not have the talent level of Mayfield and Beechwood and LCA type schools. The community/school/parent commitment is not at the level of those schools. Single digit participation in the weight room and team numbers in the 30's to 40's range also hinder this. Could go on and on but until these issues change it will be difficult.

With people wondering what happened with Brown, let's dig deep and see what happened.
Brown got the first two carries of the game for LCA with the second carry resulting in a fumble recovered by Beechwood.
On LCA's second possession, Emerson gained 30 yards on the first play. That worked well so LCA gave Riffle a carry on the next play. Then Brown gets another carry, 4 yard gain. Mason Moore got the next carry and fumbled, Beechwood recovers. Should LCA have done something different there?
Now Beechwood leads 13-0. Down two scores with 8:24 till halftime, what should LCA do? They give it to Emerson again and he picks up 10. That is 2 carries for 40 yards for Emerson. Nevertheless, Brown gets 3 of the next 5 carries for LCA. It is 3rd and 5, Nieves fakes to Brown and picks up 3. On 4th and 2, LCA gives it to Moore and he is stopped by Beechwood. Brown has half the touches in the game for LCA at this point. And Emerson has been more effective by far on his 3 touches. Hard to question what LCA has done on offense with play calling. Maybe Brown should have carried the ball those last two plays? But Brown only gained 2 yards on 2nd and 7. See, it isn't easy to question the play calling.
Next possession for LCA, they get the ball with 3 minutes left in the half and they trail 20-0. LCA goes to the passing game. Brown is targeted on 2 of the first 4 passes and both are incomplete. However, on the second incompletion Beechwood is called for pass interference. Brown was well covered. The pass was a little short and hit the Beechwood defender in the back. It was a 50/50 call but to our discussion here, Brown was the target and Beechwood was right there with him. Next play, Brown carries it for 2 yards. At this point LCA has run 21 plays and Brown has either been the ball carrier or targeted receiver on 9 of them. Almost half the plays Brown was given the opportunity. Nieves then completed a 28 yard pass to Moore and after a rush by Chaney, Nieves completed a TD pass to Chaney. No one can question those last 3 plays because they resulted in LCA's TD.
So here is what the first half looked like.
Brown's 9 first half plays resulted in 7 carries, 64 yards and a lost fumble. Targeted on two passes and both were incomplete.
The rest of the team had 6 carries for 60 yards, 41 yards receiving, a TD and a lost fumble.
What produced more for LCA? Going to Brown or going to other very talented players? Should Brown have touched the ball more? Where?
__________________________________________________________________________________
LCA's first second half drive, first play was a 57 yard completion and run by Selby to the 3 yard line. Two of the next 3 plays were runs by Brown and he scored a TD on a 1 yard run on 3rd and goal. No questions about usage of Brown here.
Then the scoop and score put LCA ahead 21-20.
With that lead, on their next possession, LCA's most effective runner in the game so far Emerson had 2 carries and Riffle had one carry. No touches for Brown. I am not sure if he was in the game on this drive. LCA punted, 3 and out.
Next possession, first down completion to Selby. Nieves gets 3 yards. Then Brown gets a carry for 1 yard. It is 3rd and 6. Should Brown get the ball after just gaining one yard on the previous play? LCA passes the ball, incomplete and is forced to punt.
At this point, I would not say anything looks like Brown was hurt. Yes, he did not get a touch on that 3 and out series, but LCA did the same type of possession on their second series of the first half handing the ball to Emerson, and it went for good yards in the first half. Maybe LCA should have broken their norm and said it is the title game, sorry but our senior Brown is getting the ball. If you do that, you are taking the ball away from Emerson, the guy who has 3 carries for 43 yards in the game.
Next LCA possession with 8:20 left in the game leading 21-20, no Brown. Nieves run, Emerson run, then incomplete on 3rd and 6. This is where I question for the first time - where was Brown? Hurt?
Next and final LCA possession with 1:43 to go trailing 23-21, Brown is back and returns the kickoff after Beechwood's field goal 35 yards to the 50. First offensive play is a 15 yard completion to Moore. Ball at Beechwood 35. Not in reasonable field goal range yet. With time short, the next 4 plays are all pass plays. First play, pass batted down by Beechwood's Jackson. Next play, Nieves scrambles for 4 yards. Next play Nieves is sacked by Beechwood's Shepherd. On 4th and 12, incomplete pass to Moore.
In the second half, Brown carried the ball 3 times for 2 yards. He returned a kickoff 35 yards. I certainly wonder why he did not get carries on the one 3 and out series, but beyond that - I see no place where I have questions for how LCA used Brown in the game.
Yes well thought out and agree that he was not the same after the hit in question. If he was not hurt then there is a question from that point onward. I would only say that the LCA coaching staff needs to get the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Walton was not good in their opener at Scott. They had some missing personnel from contact tracing and played poorly. Good to see them starting to play better but long road.

Depends is the best answer. All qualified candidates would depend on what "qualified" means to the people looking. If I value them I do but not an apples to apples comparison. Barth is a alumni from the institution that is looking for the job and played on both Duffy and Mueller coached teams(understands history and culture) . He is still in the area and successful at his current job in the area. He has been with the same school for 11 years(loyalty). If those are not some of qualities that they are looking for then no I don't reach out to him(ie looking for an outsider).

I have never applied for a job in my professional career where I did not follow up. If Barth applied and did not follow up, that is a mistake by him. You probably don't know the answer to that. I am saying he needs to follow up if he wants the job. Let that committee know you want the job and want a chance to prove they should hire you.

I don't know but I agree with your assessment with the proviso that when I am looking to hire someone and I know there is a qualified candidate that has not applied I reach as well. Once again, I do not know if this happened and he declined or what.

I have a serious question for you and perhaps you know the answer and perhaps you don’t. I have been told by several people that he did not apply thus did not interview. Been told by others he applied but did not get interview. If he applied and did not get interview I might reach out to administration and make sure they got my application.
I don't know the answer but I wonder if you(Highland search committee, alumni, power brokers) would have reached out to him if you were going to seriously consider him? Did they? I don't have the answer.

Yep, and history would say that is way too big a jump especially considering they are moving to 3A.
