Jones, Smith help St. X pull away in 2nd half over Manual for 73-64 win

Other than No. 1 ranked Trinity, no Seventh Region team is going into next week’s district tournaments hotter than St. Xavier.

The Tigers, who joined the state’s elite teams at No. 20 in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings this week, whipped visiting No. 10 Manual 73-64 Friday night for their sixth consecutive victory and seventh win in their last eight outings.

Alex Jones, a 6-foot-3 junior forward, finessed his way for 19 points, including eight points after Manual closed to within 53-49 with 5:27 left. Nathan Smith, a rugged, 6-3 senior forward, tallied nine of his 19 points in the final 4:32 of action.

Jones penetrated the lane for soft, floating one-hand shots.
