Mustang Posted February 10, 2012 Share Posted February 10, 2012 The Mason County Royals (19-2) earned the 10th Region Freshmen Championship on Thursday night, defeating the Harrison County Thorobreds 60-39 at Brossart High School. The first half was extremely physical, highlighted by turnovers from both sides, a double foul, a technical foul, and an intentional foul. Ryan Johnson and Will Griffith combined for 13 of the team's 17 first quarter points, countered by Trent Thompson's 8 and Darrin Hicks' 5. The Royals led 17-15 after six minutes. The two squads played toe to toe in the second period, with the Royals only able to increase their margin of seperation by a single point, giving them a 31-28 advantage at halftime. Defense became the name of the game in the second half, as the Royals bolted out to a 38-28 lead before the Breds managed to get on the board, and following a Brandon Case 3-pointer for Harrison County, the Royals continued the onslaught, settling for a 14-3 advantage in the pivitol period. Game, set, match............ Once the Royals got into synch, it was jailbreak and the route was on. The Royals outscored the Breds 29-11 in the second half. Ryan Johnson finished the night with a game-high 16 points for Mason County, Will Griffith added 14. For Harrison County, Trent Thompson was the lone double-figure scorer, with 14 points on the night. Congratulations to Harrison County, who close the book on their season at a nice 17-5 record, while the Royals miss the magic 20 wins mark by a single decision, winning the 10th Region Freshmen Championship on a 19-2 mark. All In Posted February 10, 2012 Share Posted February 10, 2012 I know Harrison County beat them once,who was the other team to beat the frosh Royals this season? Also, have seen Jordan Gilbert on the sidelines helping his Dad coach the freshman, did he quit Transy?, have not seen his name in Transy's stats for quite awhile. Hats off to all of those who were involved. Got to see a lot of young talent during the tourney. The future is bright and will be interesting in the always entertaining 10th Region.
