November 5, 201114 yr But he does care about people. One may care, but what good is it if you cannot pay for it or you take monies from other services or just drive the state deeper in debt, until you bankrupt the state? That is not caring, causing more problems than it solves. It may get you votes, but it is phony feel goodism. Real caring is solving the current problems they have and not causing more.

November 6, 201114 yr For what its worth, an inland rail project is desperately needed in CA and $98 billion would be unbelievably cheap. In fact, the rise in price I would guess comes almost entirely from eminent domain/land acquisition costs alone, and should be paid without asking. This same argument occurred on the time/price projections for BART in the Bay Area years before its completion and BART has undeniably aided that City in transport. In fact, without BART you simply would not be able to navigate the Bay Area. Californians get laughed at regularly by the rest of the country, but they face the problems we face 20 years before we do and they can be very resourceful. Their ideas burn to the ground and then they arise from the ashes like a phoenix and find solutions. More than I can say for our state. I think that you make points that many of us can't understand becuase we don't live in areas with the same concerns and issues. I also agree with the bolded statement. From an individual state standpoint, we should not be criticizing such projects because we don't exist in the same environment. We can look at issues from a high-level view, but when it gets down to the nitty-gritty, there are issues that we simply don't experience. I feel the same way about criticizing the decisions for individual communities/cities within our own state. Here's a local example. TARC (Transit Authority of River City) recently received a federal grant to buy more hybrid buses. The comments under the article on the C-J website were overwhelmingly slanted toward those who felt it was an unneccessary expenditure and most of those people were people who felt that we didn't have a need for public transportation and/or lived outside the Louisville Metro area, or were in areas where more affluent people live. Taking away the environmental implications of switching out the fleet to hybrids, the issues ignored were the financial concerns of maintenance and fuel costs on older busses, the issue of overcrowding of existing routes, and the very real need for a progressive public transportation infrastructure to attract new business.
November 6, 201114 yr RM, what won't we understand about spending money we don't have? I live in CA at the moment. Community colleges prices are rising, UC prices are rising dramatically. Cal State prices are rising dramatically. I don't see how making us kids take more out in loans is going to help our problems. We already will pay more than our fair share because the generations in power now doesn' t know how to solve a problem. Throwing the debt onto us doesn't solve anything. Don't get me wrong, RM. I would want this to exist. Right now, however, CA just doesn't have the money.

November 7, 201114 yr Author I'm 64 and I have Noooooooooooooooooo idea what you are talking about . Sorry. I grew up in CA when Brown was Gov the first time around, and just assumed the entire country was in on his antics (aren't all kid's immediate surroundings the "entire world"). I forget the exact details of how he got the name "Governor Moonbeam," but it had something to do with all the hippies and new agers he hung around with. He also dated Linda Ronstadt for quite a few years while Gov, which was all over the tabloids out there as you can imagine.
