35th Championship game between Beechwood and CovCath has been canceled.

The game has been canceled today due to rain. As of now they are looking to play on Friday.

Regional starts Monday, right? With this game getting pushed back, I could see the pitching matchups being affected.

Will this make Bertke eligible?

Where is this game being played?

Same place, Meinken.

I was told that it could possibly be moved.

I don't see Bertke pitching this game regardless of when it is played. I am actually thinking in the other direction. Could the coaches hold out their top pitchers in the district title game to keep their options open in regional play? If this game gets pushed back into the weekend, I think that could happen. How important is it to win the district title versus setting up pitching for the regional?

Why Meinken? Isn't there a gravel parking lot available somewhere? :p

It probably be a little better than what Meinken offers. Shame your team bowed out already.

Tough call. You lose this game and you will face either NCC/Boone/Dixie in the first round. Any of those opponents will be very, very tough. You beat CCH and you have a 2 out of 3 chance to face a weaker team (St. Henry/Newport). If this game was played today, I can certainly see value in throwing Bertke a couple of innings (hopefully keep pitch count down) and still retaining the option to bring him back on Monday. If this game doesn't get played until Saturday, it becomes a much riskier opinion. Probably why high school coaches get paid so much money . . . .

Is there a difference in facing Boone/NCC/Dixie in the first or second round? I know this has been debated on here before. I thought most were in favor of throwing your ace in the first round to make sure you get to second round regardless of opponent. I say you set your pitching to win it all. I see no difference in losing in the first or second round. I know you have to win the first to have a chance to win the second. If you play one of those big 3 in the first round you throw the ace. If you face them in the second, you probably faced a slightly weaker opponent in the first round and threw the #2 and have the ace throw round 2 I would guess. JMO

I remember a couple years ago everyone said Myerhoff was crazy for not starting his ace vs Highlands in the first round, Bertke started. He then started that ace in the second round against Conner. That ace was removed from the game early with BW down and they came back and won that game. I am fairly sure everyone remembers what happened in the championship.

To me, the difference is that with an obviously weaker opponent you have the option to either throw #2 or throw #1 and hopefully get him out after an inning or two if your team can put up a quick lead. If you face one of the strong teams in round one, you have to start your ace and unless you're lucky enough to open up a huge lead, you stick with him all the way through.

Maybe it's just personal for me regarding the choice of throwing/hold back ace in a tourney game in anticipation of the next round games. I got caught once or twice saving my better pitching looking down the road at the next round and was then left trying to explain to parents/other coaches why my top pitchers were sitting on the bench when we got eliminated. So I just take the position that you can't win a game you're not playing in. You may not have your best to pitch, but anything can happen in baseball and sometimes the slower, junkball pitchers can really screw up a good-hitting team anyways.
