Revamping District/Regional tourn format

Featured Replies

In light of the economy, has there every been any consideration to having the final of the district games and maybe even the first round of the regionals at the highest seeded school for each district game and at the district winner for each of the regional first round games. Last week to follow both girls and boys kids and school was out 4 nights, and could possibly be that way this week.

Or maybe have a host school for the district final and have both girls and boys game on the same night. In a lot of cases the host school doesnt even have a team playing in the final

I am sure I have overlooked some reasons this wouldn't work - but just wondering if there is ever any consideration given to tweaking the system to make it better for the school budgets and students/families trying to follow the teams. If makes a long, expensive two weeks.

I am more familiar with the 10th Region format. Do other regions do it differently?

The 3rd Region actually has the district winners hosting the first round game of the regional tournament on their home floor. To my knowledge, they're the only region to do so.

Blasphemy!

I have long advocated for change in basketball. I mean, they now shoot at hoops instead of peach baskets and have a 3-point line. But still.

With the new KHSAA rule changing the game count to 30 regular season games, teams will be looking to extend their schedule some.

1. Do away with districts

2. Every team must play every team in the region once. These games will go toward seeding so there is an importance. You can still schedule region and old district teams twice or even three times. The first game counts toward seeding.

3. There is a region tournament, staggered with the girls region, that lasts two weeks. The first week (old district) and the second week (region week). It doesnt change the time frame at all.

4. Region winner advances to Rupp and the history huggers still have their Sweet 16.

There are not very many, if any, situations that will see districts increase in number. They will only shrink from here on out.

I don't mind this idea, but the one problem is that I have a feeling that some of the small schools would forfeit their seeding games and it would virtually turn into a blind draw for the last spots. I like the current format, but I do think that the KHSAA should redistrict about every 5 years to try and make it fair for everyone.
