Homer Rice and the triple option

Featured Replies

I have been reading his book about the wishbone written when he was the offensive coordinator at UCLA with Pepper Rodgers in 1973. It is one of the best football books I have ever read as to offensive football theory.

The Explosive Short T Offense by Homer Rice is the book where he begins to talk about the option. I believe the photos are of Highlands players and in the introduction of the book he refers to Bill Yeoman creating the triple. I do not have the book in front of me because it is at home but there is refernece to the two coming up with some of the same basic ideas.

I beleive the Short T used Inside Veer and Outside Veer. On inside veer the QB reads the first thing outside the A gap. On outside veer you read the end man on the line of scrimage as your hand off key. Now later Smith stop running the outside veer because he went to a 3 wide rec system. This is what is covered in his Air Option Attack book. Since the offense did not have a TE you could not run otuside veer. Having 3 wide rec causes issues for teams and the passing gam ecombine with inside veer causes alignment and assignment issues. Rice's version (which was run out of split back in the 3 wide system) put up very good numbers while he was the OC at UK and while he was at UC.

Here is a link to a breakdown of the Short T offense which is what Rice ran at Highlands during his time there.

Rice later went to the Split Back veer which is also refered to as the Houston Veer offense which is what Bill Yeoman is credit for creating.
