Sounds about right.

 

Manning is a good player but I'm not sure he's top 10 yet. Saw him yesterday and he tends to drift off at times and not even look for the ball. He also "whines" about every call against him and looks at Coach Hicks with a look like "what did I do?"

 

I hate to say that because I've talked to Tamron many times and I really like the kid, but he needs to work on his maturity on the court.

Boys' State Outlook | Title hopefuls are spread all around.

Whichever boys' basketball team wins the Seventh Region this season — and many expect it will be No. 1 Jeffersontown or No. 2 Eastern — likely will be the favorite to win the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena in March.

But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of other strong teams around the state.

“Individually I think this is as deep of a class (of seniors) as we've had in a while, and that translates over to a lot of high-quality teams,” Clark County coach Scott Humphrey said. “And it's not just in the Lexington and Louisville areas. I think from corner to corner you'll find some quality.”

Indeed, there are top-10 teams from all over in The Courier-Journal's preseason poll of coaches.

No. 3 Christian County, No. 5 Warren Central and No. 7 Bowling Green represent Western Kentucky. No. 6 Scott County and No. 8 Tates Creek lead the Lexington area, and No. 4 Clark County and No. 9 Mason County look to be the top teams east of Lexington.

 

 

Many considered Clark County's starting five among the state's best last season, but the Cardinals were knocked out of the postseason by Mason County in the 10th Region final. Seniors Vinny Zollo (No. 6, Western Kentucky) and Robbie Stenzel (No. 10, Eastern Kentucky) are ranked among the state's top 10 players and have signed with NCAA Division I schools.

Seniors Corey Rogers and Jaylen Daniels joined Zollo and Stenzel in double-figure scoring last season, and Humphrey expects senior Travis Purvis to return to form after having knee surgery as a sophomore.

A lack of depth was an issue for Clark County last season, but Humphrey now expects it to be a strength with juniors Bopper Stenzel, Charlie Rogers and Adam Fatkin expected to contribute.

“Physically they weren't ready last year, but they are this year,” Humphrey said. “I think we're in good shape.”
