Boyle County 2010/2011

What does Boyle County need to do to improve in 2010/2011? What do they need to keep doing to be sucessful? Remember, please be constructive.

The Rebels look to defend their 45th District Title. Unfortunately the Rebels will have to do that without the services of Jacob Bodner. Bodner tore his ACL at practice last Thursday and is out for the season. Bodner was returning as the team's leading scorer, led the team in assists and was the team leader. His loss is a tremendous blow to a team with expectations of repeating as District Champs and returning to the Regional Tourney.

The team is a junior and senior laden team with 5 seniors including Bodner(out for the year) and Will Dunn(not eligible until Jan. 3). Josh Terry, Chris Cook and Justin Short are the other 3 seniors. Taking Bodner's spot at point guard will be Micah Satterly. From what I have gathered Satterly, Bodner, Short, Michael Arnett and Kyle Rice were the projected starting lineup on opening day. As of now I believe Short will slide from forward to guard and Josh Terry(senior), Cody Cooper(junior) and Aram Martin(sophomore) are all candidates for the remaining opening day starting spot. I believe Tommy Hastings(junior) will assume that spot when football season is over and I believe Will Dunn will be in the starting lineup when he becomes eligible but I am unsure whose spot he will take. Whether he starts or not he will be a welcome addition to the team and he will play big minutes as he gets acclimated into the system. I expect this team to be peaking come tournament time much like last year.

Despite the loss of Bodner I can say that my expectations for the team have not wavered. I still expect to be very much in the running for the District Title and playing in the Region Tourney. This team will still be good enough and talented enough to at the very least be the District Runner Up securing a spot in the Region Tourney. This team will be playing for Distrtict Champs and I honestly expect to be District Champs. One thing you can count on is that Coach Adams will have these boys prepared to play from day one. I think this team will be a lot like last year's teams with a solid balance offensively and very strong defensively. Sophomore Brent Jones will likely see some varsity time at the beginning of the year as well.

I am more than ready for the season and I am looking forward to our scrimmage at Dunbar to get things underway.

On a side note-to go back to the Bodner injury-I have watched Jacob Bodner play basketball since his elementary school days. I have always looked forward to the day when he and Micah Satterly played together in the same backcourt. I'll never get to see that and I am sad for that but not as sad as I am for Jacob who will miss his senior year of baskeball. He was a joy to watch not just in high school but throughout his life regardless of the sport he played. I always called him a little John Stockton when he was younger and it was evident early on that he would be the point guard at Boyle County one day. To see a young man's senior year taken away because of an injury is heartbreaking. He isn't my kid but I was still choked up last Friday when I received the news. I can only imagine the pain he is going through right now and all I can say is that he and his family are in our prayers. I know how much he loves the game of basketball and how much he loves the team and what those guys mean to him. I hope the team can recover from this loss better than I have because for now, three days later, it still hurts pretty bad. He'll always be one of my top 3 Rebels of all time regardless of the sport and I wish him a speedy recovery in time for baseball. He will be missed on the court this winter.

Boyle County will be playing North Laurel, I believe in the Coal Classic on November 20. The Rebels will be in the Henry County tourney Dec. 28-30 and the Toyota Classic Jan. 19-22.

Boyle will host Trinity(Feb. 5) and Shelby County(Feb. 4) (both without the services of Daryl Hicks, ironically) on back to back nights in February.

The season kicks off at Cumberland County on Dec. 4.

Knox Central is new to the schedule this year(Dec. 10-first home game)

Other notable non-district games include Marion County(Jan. 11-home), Mercer County(Feb 8-home), Wayne County(Feb 17-away-last regular season game), East Jessamine(Dec. 7-away), West Jessamine(Feb. 1-home), Casey County(Feb. 15-away), Woodford County(Feb. 12-home) and Pulaski County(Dec. 17-home). Bracken County travels to Boyle on Jan. 15 as well.

Will Bodner be able to play baseball this season? I hate to hear that an injury will derail his basketball season. He seems like a good kid to go along with being a really good ball player.

From what I understand he will not be playing baseball this year. He was given a 6-8 month timetable of being completely healthy with a minimum of 6 months of healing time for his knee. I would be surprised if he played at all. Xavier is honoring his scholarship and he will still be attending Xavier on a Baseball Scholarship. He will be signing next Monday at BCHS.

And yes, Jacob is a great kid. As I said before, one of my top 3 All-Time Rebels.
