Sounds great in theory, but rules are also now in place where you all but have to attend to go on to the next level. The problem is that scholarship compensation has not kept up with the size of the industry. If we were still in the 50s when games were not televised and Tim Tebow is not put on the cover of video games, the scope of a scholarship would be fine. But now we have an NCAA tournament in basketball which just signed an 11 billion dollar contract, yet the kids get nothing more.

 

Athletic scholarship kids are getting a free or discounted education and the school overall benefits from these deals. Better facilities, keeping costs down for non scholarship students, more $$ for academic scholarships (by the way, aren't colleges here for academics--not sports???).

Colleges make a KILLING on these kids and their programs and the kids should be paid something.

 

In reality, very few athletic programs actually make money. I'm getting that info from an accountant for the NCAA.

I get so sick of hearing people say college athletes should be paid. The only thing that needs to happen is to even out the schlorship numbers. For example, baseball only gets 11.7 to use for a 35 man roster. While other sports have one per player. I think the NCAA needs to make it one per player and never consider paying players. Is going to school for free not enough?

No offense but I bet your school didn't make millions because of your contributions during your time there.

If an awesome trumpet player goes to Ohio State and is hired to play a commercial for some big company in Columbus - no one says a word. There's a double standard for the athletes. They have a value and are unable to capitalize on that value. It's just wrong in my opinion.

When all these teams were talking about going to different conferences there was talk of the major conferences leaving the NCAA and starting another athletic association. I really hope that comes to fruition some day. I still think the student/athletes will be exploited but I doubt it would be illegal for a coach to give them a ride home, pay for a meal when the cafeteria is closed, or lose eligibility for selling something that is their own personal property.

I believe they shouldn't be allowed to sell their jerseys. They are going to school for free, and have all of their needs taken care of. I wasn't allowed to sell any of my college gear (not that anyone outside of my family would've bought it anyway).

That's not what I said. I said athletic programs, hence the entire department. Either way, theres no chance any school outside of the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, or PAC 10 make money (with very few exceptions). And there's plenty of them inside those that probably don't make money. The scholarship money these schools give away come from somewhere. It's part of the athletic department budget, atleast that's the way I understood it after talking to the assistant AD at UK for a class a few years ago. Football has what 85 scholarships? Let's say each tuition bill is what 15,000? That's almost 1.3 million in expenses right there just for football scholarships.
