What does Madison Southern need to do to improve in

2010?

What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

The loss of Rico Brown will either hurt them or benefit them by making the rest of the team step up and try to fill a very large void together. They have a two year starter at quarterback and several skilled position starters coming back. The backs are going to have to encourage the linemen into wanting to block for them. I know this from experience that a cocky back who throws off on their linemen in the huddle when things are going bad will find themselves even deeper in the hooey on the next play:sssh:, as good linemen will block their guts out for a person they respect. They will have to play more "team" football and each player will need to get stronger not only physically, but mentally as well because the Southern players will have to shake the monkey off their backs that keeps their heads down. That means a more optimistic "Let's get out there and whip somebody together attitude", rather than the more common and easier approach of, "If HE had played this way we would of won". Or, "If the coach would have played me and used these plays more, we would have won." I really root for this team as they have the players in place to win some football games. I know several of the kids on this team and think the world of many of them. I don't know the coaching staff, but, I think that if they will go in optimistically and promote a teamwork atmosphere without the screaming and "military" style I have heard they sometimes impress upon the players, I think they can make a pretty good year out of this season. By military (a quote by several players and past players I've heard) for example, I've heard they engage the players in full windsprints on pregame days. The coaches also need to earn the boys respect, (A high five on a heads up play and a slap on the back for a good hit goes a really long way) and get them to buy into a team concept where a little yelling doesn't hurt when applied where needed.(The good Lord knows that some of these kids need attitude adjustments at times.) I truly wish the Eagles the best in the upcoming season and hope they win several games. (Except one...) GOOD LUCK BOYS ON A SUCCESFUL SEASON!!!:thumb::thumb:

Anytime a team has a loss like Rico, it will be hard to replace him. I think Madison So. will be a better team this year and will win 5 or 6 games and have a shot at making the play-offs. They need to get more kids involved in Football, a school this size should have 50-60 kids dressed out.

I was talking to a parent the other day in (where else?) Walmart. I'm hearing the numbers are hurting quite a bit again this year and I don't understand it because Berea has a youth football program that will usually have around five teams in ages 10-14 competing and nearly that many in the younger age group. There is also an all star football traveling group that one particularly active coach spends a lot of time with going around the state playing games. My youngest played for him in Owensboro year before last after Thanksgiving and had a lot of fun. The parent told me how many kids he heard was playing and it was fewer than 30. I hope they get several more out this summer to practice. The freshman class that is coming in had a pretty good team a couple of years ago when we played them and I hope for the boys' sake that some of that talent makes it through to the team this year.

I work with a guy who son's will be playing for Southern. He told me that he has heard rumblings that if the numbers don't improve there is a possibility of there being no team this upcoming season.

I sincerely hope that this is not the case. I believe that if this is the case, then the parents of the players need to get together and discuss exactly what they want out of their football team/ school/ coaches/ administration. Everyone is going to have to get together to move that program forward and killing the program (as what happened at Berea Community) is nearly impossible to overcome. (Berea did overcome it) I certainly hope that this is just jawing by parents as I couldn't imagine not having a football program in the school where my kids would be attending. Good luck to Southern's kids. The interest in football is rooted in Berea in the youth football programs that I discussed earlier, but, for some reason it doesn't carry on over into high school. The lack of interest isn't just in football in Berea it seems....there isn't a senior league in baseball in Berea anymore. The kids have to travel over to Richmond if they want to play senior league baseball.

I've heard almost the exact same things you mentioned from my friend concerning football in Berea.

Looks to me like they need to bring someone in that can get the kids involved. 5 years ago McCreary Central finished the season with 22 kids dressed out, 18 were McCreary County Kids, 4 were from the Pine Knot Job Corp. The past 2 years McCreary has Dressed 45+. It can be done, but the Coaching Staff has to really work at it. Good Luck to Madison So. PEOPLE DON'T LET THAT PROGRAM FOLD.
