North advances to play Harlan County in the regional semifinals

Old Roy has done an excellent job with a young team. Only 2 seniors. They play Harlan in the semis. They have beaten Harlan County twice this season, the first was early and was a 5-6 point game, the 2nd win was more lopsided. I think NL has an excellent chance at making the finals this year. He said before the season started that this team could be better than last year's team. I thought it was coach speak after losing his 2 leading scorers including 13th Region POY Catie Jackson. Boy was I wrong. Crawford (soph) has been an excellent addition as has Madden (fr). Considering that NL has split with SL, and lost to Clay twice in close games (including the district title that Clay won by 1 point on a buzzer beater), ... NL has a legit shot to make the state tourney. I don't know if they will, but they have a legit shot.

 

I am pretty sure that NL has never been to the state tourney and this would be a huge boost for the program. Coach Bowling and Coach Fredericks have done what they do best, ... build a competitive team. I don't see him adding another state title to his resume, ... but he deserves the KABC 13th Region COY Honor he just received for his work this season. This team has really come together.

North Laurel has a very nice ball club. They're fundamental, very well-coached, and Crawford is sensational.

 

However, they simply do not have the size to compete with Harlan Co.'s frontcourt duo of Carroll and Maggard. And, let's not forget, this is the same Harlan Co. team that reached the regional finals last season in their first year of existence.

North Laurel has already defeated Harlan County both times they met this year. 53-51 at Harlan & 51-38 at North Laurel. I think they have a shot.

How can you say this after North has beaten them twice already this season? I look for North to be playing Clay on Sat. and having a real shot at beating them.

The funny thing is that Coach Burchell from Clay County commented after beating NL in the district title game that he was really 'surprised by how much they hurt us on the inside'. North's inside game had improved and while they don't have great size, they have some girls working so hard on the inside that they are competing. I hope to see North in the title game. It would be a HUGE step for the program.

Bell County's David Teague would be the other coach in the mix. Bell has improved tremendously this year.
