Important News About Football

Featured Replies

This message came across the Football Coaches List Server today:

I Have been informed of a SURVEY for all ADs that is currently circulating through the state concerning FOOTBALL. I want to make sure that EVERY FOOTBALL COACH has input on this survey concerning OUR SPORT. The surveys contain questions concerning PLAYOFFS / CLASSIFICATION/ WEEK ZERO GAMES/ and the future of FOOTBALL. Please make sure you have input with your Athletic Director AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Just a heads up for ALL COACHES in the state. Make sure you make your AD hears your opinion on your sport.

I hope they added bringing 7 on 7 back to June instead of just 4 days in July.

This sounds rather ominous Ram. Does this sort of inquiry happen with any degree of regularity?

If the survey was sent out by the KHSAA (and I think it was), the KHSAA sends out surveys fairly frequently. With re-alignment for football scheduled to be looked at this Spring, the KHSAA is trying to get the pulse on several issues that it may need to address. There has been talk by some that 6 classes are too many. There has been some talk that only 2 teams from each district should make the playoffs. There has been some talk that the season starts too soon and/or ends too late. I'm sure the KHSAA just wants to see if those sentiments are shared by the majority of the schools or just a few. In lawyer terms, the KHSAA is just doing their due diligence before they work on re-alignment this Spring. I don't see it as ominous at all.

The e mail on the list serve came from a well respected coach to make sure the coaches knew about the survey that was sent out to the ADs (and the principals also I believe) and to make sure the coaches provided their input. Since the decisions made by the KHSAA may have impact on other sports as well as have financial implications to the schools, I believe the KHSAA wanted to get a broader perspective on the issues than just the football coaches' views.

Ominous? Maybe. Important? Definitely.

I hope all the coaches, AD's, and Principles take this very seriously. The last time (when they moved 7 on 7 to July and did away with football in June) many didn't voice their opinions and that passes. I see this as an opportunity for the coaches and AD's to stand up and be heard. And this is a time when the coaches and AD's should be truthful and voice their desires for the betterment of football in the state of Kentucky. Will the KHSAA follow everything wanted? Maybe not, but this is one of those opportunities to get things done.

We have many threads on BGP every year concerning things that we, and others, would like to see changed in Kentucky football, and this questionnaire is asking for those exact things. Now, some of our wants are "Out there", but some of our wants are common among a great deal of people, and would be well received by the fans, the coaches, the schools, and many other "Football minded" people.

Do we really want six classes, it was done and many people didn't like it from the beginning, but is that what the coaches want? Do we really want 95% of the teams making the playoffs, is that what the coaches want? Do they want all the teams making the playoffs? Do they want only the top two teams making the playoffs? Are there areas of concern about future realignment? Are their concerns about 7 on 7 being only in July? Is there a desire to change Spring Football (God I hope so, that has been a point of emphasis for me for a long time)? Are there other concerns that the coaches and schools would like to see changed?

These are all questions that can and should be answered in this questionnaire. A small group of coaches changed 7 on 7 last year. What could happen if a large group of coaches and AD's responded similarly to this questionnaire?

I posted the email on BGP to make sure that every fan has the opportunity to get in the school's ear and make sure this questionnaire is completed and returned to the KHSAA. I hope it works and a great number of schools return it and are heard.

Sorry for the leathneckesc post, but dang it, I am a football lover and what it my way.:D

No need to apologize in my opinion. :D

And I agree totally with your well stated, well thought out, articulate, but not wordy, and logical post.

If the football coaches don't take the time to express their thoughts to their AD, they can't complain when decisions are made based on the results of the survey.

This decision really doesn't make any sense to me??? I'm not buying the baseball excuse, i can't see why 7 on 7 in June is a problem???

Some football coaches and some basketball coaches came up with the "solution" to what they thought was a problem. Basketball coaches thought the 7s in June hurt the opportunities for basketball players to play in June. Because of the inter school competition of the 7s, kids playing both sports would want to participate in the 7s. Some football coaches thought the kids missing football practices to participate in basketball open gyms and "pick up" games in July, hurt football. So "they" came up with this idea as a compromise, although I think a fair number of football people don't consider it a compromise. Keep in mind that at a lot of schools (if I'd venture a guess, I'd guess a majority), basketball is still king. If a football coach bucks basketball too hard, his life with his AD, principal and super gets a lot tougher. Unfair perhaps, but life and reality isn't always fair.

I don't know for sure but I think the KHSAA thought the solution had a lot more support from more football coaches than it really did. In any event, I believe the idea was supported by the schools when it went to the delegate vote last year. Which I believe means that more than 2/3s of the schools supported it. I also believe that the only way it can be "undone" is for a new proposal that would rescind the last proposal will need to be approved by the schools, but I'm not sure about that.
