Garrard/Mercer cancelled; breaks long streak

Featured Replies

A historical record will fall tonight with the cancellation of the Garrard/Mercer game. This will be the first time since Garrard County High School opened in the fall of 1964 that these two schools will not play a game during the season.

That's likely of no interest to anyone but me, but thought it was interesting.

That's sad that they will not be able to play after playing every year for so long.

This weather has been awful for getting games in this year. Our district has been seeding their games since the early '80's and it's going to be a chore to get all the games played before the boys district begins play next Tuesday. Owsley County still has games remaining with Powell County and Estill County to make up within that short time frame. And it's giving more snow tonight, with another possibility of a snow storm for Sunday and Monday. When will it ever end? :isurrender:

If i am not mistaken according to KHSAA bylaw, all seed games have to be played by the first Saturday in February or it counts as a loss for both teams. YOu might want to have your school check this bylaw!

Garrard/Mercer is no longer a district game since Garrard moved back to the 45th a few years ago. So there was no requirement to play. But Mercer was a rival for years and years and since the district has changed and Harrodsburg moved in with Mercer, the rivalry has really lost a lot of luster.

FWIW, Garrard and Mercer have met 102 times, which is 17 games more than the second most games against open schools (85 matchups with Boyle County). Garrard leads the all-time series 52-50.
