South Oldham 89 North Oldham 84 (OT)

Featured Replies

South rallies from 12 down in the third quarter.

Tied at 75 after Brice Jewitt hit 1 of 2 FTs with about 12 seconds left to send the game to OT.

South hit threes poorly, but was dynamite at the line (24 of 34 for 70.6%) and attacked the basket relentlessly. Casey Jackson (23 points), Carson Fields (21 pts), and Corey Dogan (21 points) led the Dragons.

South came back in the fourth thanks to the charity stripe, where they hit 13 of 16 in the period, led by Dogan's 6 for 6.

Fields held the Dragons together early, when nobody could hit shots. He finished 8 of 11, with two threes.

North was led by Devon Rowan and Max Steinfeld with 21 apiece; freshman guard David Levitch had 18 off the bench.

Three players fouled out: Carson Fields for South, and Alex Foley and Levitch for North.

In the OT, South suddenly caught fire beyond the arc, hitting 3 of 3 (Jackson 2 for 2, Dogan 1 for 1) shots.

Max Steinfeld scored 9 of his 21 in the OT - he scored all of North's points in the period.

South wins the top seed in District 29. The standings:

South 3-0

North 1-1

Oldham 1-2

Trimble 0-1

North travels to Trimble this Friday, but the outcome of the game almost certainly won't change anything. If North wins, they claim the #2 seed and face Oldham. But even if Trimble pulls the upset, North almost certainly remains the #2 seed (with Oldham #3 and Trimble #4) due to the 3-way tiebreaker (Litkenhous rating).

CM...you've seen the Dragon's play a few times this year, is this the worst you've seen them shoot? Is it their Achilles heal? Did North apply the D to cause the poor shooting, or was it just a matter of South missing open shots.

How was the crowd? I was on US-42 last night and the stream of cars coming out of campus was impressive.

If seeds play out, round 2 will be in the same gym in a few weeks.

Crowd was absolutely INCREDIBLE last night...huge turnouts from both schools...the South side featured a huge student section painted green, and the North side had its usual home turnout of students all decked out in black. Lots of students painted up for the game. Not only was it a big crowd, it was a LOUD crowd, and many had signs. It was the closest thing to a tournament atmosphere I've seen this year.

I would definitely say shooting is NOT South's achilles heel. (I have seen them shoot poorly...worst performance by far, however, was in the 2nd game of the year, at Western Hills...hit just 20 of 56 for 35.7% and 5 of 20 beyond the arc for 25%, and just 7 of 14 (50%) at the line. Ugh.) But on the season, South is hitting an amazing 48.9% of their shots - overall. They're hitting 40% from beyond the arc - equating to over 50% from 2 point range - and 70+% from the line. The truly frightening thing for opponents is that they are scoring a lot of points, with a lot of different players doing the damage. Carson Fields hit 8 of 11 shots, 2 of 2 beyond the arc, and 2 of 2 at the line for 21 vs. North - he's averaging about 9 ppg on the season. It's a different guy every night, it seems. Although Casey Jackson has been the leading scorer in 4 of the 6 Dragon games we've broadcast (Brice Jewitt was the leading scorer in the other two games), the Dragons are averaging about 4 players in double figures every game.

The subs - Simpson goes deep on his bench every game - score, too. In the six games we've broadcast of the Dragons, Corey Dogan has been in double figures twice off the bench (21 and 11 points), Charlie Malueg has one double figure game (10 points), and Dylan Gordon scored 13 in a game.

Against North, South actually didn't shoot that bad at all, although they were atrocious in the first half beyond the arc, making just 2 of 11 threes. But when the dust had settled, South finished 28 of 67 for 41.8% overall and 9 of 27 for 33.3% beyond the arc. That means they were a solid 19 of 40 inside the arc for 47.5% and the 33.3% from beyond the arc is right at the benchmark for success from three-point land. At the line, South was 24 of 34 for 70.5%.

I know in my original post I said South shot poorly from beyond the arc; I was typing too fast - I meant to say that they shot poorly beyond the arc in the FIRST HALF.

I actually thought South got good looks in the first half, but simply missed the shots. In retrospect, you have to wonder if the kids were just a bit juiced up - this is an "extreme" rivalry, and both teams were obviously hyped.

What I thought South failed to do well against North was hit the glass against North's monster center, Devon Rowan. But they looked like a veteran team (they are - 8 seniors) as they simply kept finding ways to come back and eventually asserted their will on North, in part due to a defense that stifled North's star guard, Alex Foley, holding him to single-digit scoring and ZERO three pointers and forced well over 20 turnovers...

Agreed. South played well in the second half.

South Oldham (18-5) — Bowling 6, Jackson 23, Jewett 8, Fields 21, Schumm 10, Dogan 21.

North Oldham (8-13) — Levitch 18, Yates 6, Foley 7, Clark 8, Steinfeld 21, Rowan 21, Lagrange 3.

3-point goals — Jackson 2, Jewett 1, Fields 3, Schumm 1, Dogan 2, Levitch 3, Yates 1, Steinfeld 1.

Georgetown College signee Carrithurs did not score for South? I saw where he scored 2 points a week ago against Meade County. Is he playing?

Brennan Carrithers??? He played, missing his only shot and was 0 for 1 at the line. Had two fouls and one rebound.

Didn't know he had signed with Georgetown...for basketball? He's South's third string center.

That's the word. Was posted on Demling's Courier-Journal blog and on the Senior/College thread on BGP.

What's the story there?

Chris Schumm- Charlie Malueg- Brennan Carrithers.
