Can private schools actively recruit students? I know they have no district or boundry, but can they send lit. to kids in middle school? If so, that ability should be consider a clear advantage. I know for a fact they send brochures, and what not, inviting middle school students to open houses and placement tests.

We can send stuff to catholic grade schools, but not public. We host open houses and invite, via the media, any student interested, to attend. We also host a collective "showcase" at Bellarmine once a year, and again, the public is welcome to attend and get more information.

As a matter of rule, the Catholc high schools in the Louisville area do not send information to a general list of public middle school kids. The rules concerning recruitment are the same for both public and private schools.

As I read KHSAA ByLaw 10 there is no legal recruitment. I suggest that if any poster has not read the document that you do so. Open enrollment is a choice of the local Board of Education for each public district. Open enrollment does not cross district boundary lines. For students living in one district to attend another district and have their ADA follow them contracts between districts must be signed. The receiving district may also charge tuition. If a district is allowing students to attend without receiving their ADA or tuition equivalent they are doing a disservice to their own patrons, educating out-of-district students for free.

I believe the only rule, probably unwritten rule, is that when a teacher teaches in a district they may have their child attend that school without tuition. This may be an open contract between school districts. I'm not sure how it works.

Are the 2 of you sure about the mailing practices of the private schools? Seems like I remember receiving some materials from varies private schools in the Louisville area and I went to a public school and wasn't catholic. I'm not trying to claim a rule violation, only trying to figure out how far we, the public schools, can push the envelope and "work harder." I also know for a fact the private schools can/do send informational materials to students outside of the county in which they are located, which I assume is perfectly fine.

My question is, can we, the public schools, send informational materials out side of our district, county, and state without being sanctioned?

From what THINK I know it would be perfectly fine if my district started sending literature to perspective students from outside of it's district, county, and/or state. I feel we would be doing nothing that isn't already allowed by the KHSAA. That would be our way of "working a little harder" to catch up with those that we chase. Right?

I don't know how long ago you went to grade school in Louisville. But, from my experience with my kids, who were in Grade school from 91-2000, and from 93-2002, the private high schools were not allowed to send unsolicited information to students, unless they were in a catholic grade school.

RockMom...I left the JCPS system in the early 90's.

Rockmom...Are you comfortable with the private schools sending informational materials to kids outside of JC? Also, is it some unwritten rule about sending materials to public school students? Why would the private schools cut their own throat by not sending materials to them?

Also, what is your opinion about public schools mailing materials to middle school students outside their district, county, and/or state? The private schools get to play with 11 on the field and so do we...the private schools get to send information to middle schools students (pretty much where ever they please), why can't we?
