I know this isn't high school basketball, but since MANY of the kids playing this weekend at the KBA will be logging big minutes at the varsity and JV levels this year I figured I would post.....

 

Anderson County beat Casey County and Crosby to advance to the state finals.

 

 

Whitley County defeated Powell County and Corbin on their path.

 

I believe there were 26 teams entered this weekend and some really nice young talent. I know Anderson has two girls that are starting Varsity this season and Whitley has some really nice young players too. Should be a great game! The finals are played on Nov 27th at Rupp Arena (just after a great girls game featuring Lincoln and Marion Co.).

Yes. I believe Powell county eliminated them saturday night.

Anderson County has some very nice players. I gonna go with them to win it all.

How did the Mason County Lady Royals do this weekend in Paris? They should be alot better this year.

You have to admire Crosby from Louisville. They had only played 1 game so far this season before this tournament versus their competition having played 30-40 games. Louisville and Lexington middle schools are at a huge disadvantage with basketball being a winter sport versus a fall sport for the rural areas.

Unfortunately there is no good solution to this problem. Most of the schools outside the Lou/Lex area play fall ball. Some of the teams there hadn't played in over a month, so it goes both ways.

 

As for the game, I thought Crosby really let the officials get to them. Whether or not you thought the game was called well or not is moot. If you let one or two calls get you out of your game and you put Anderson on the line they are going to beat you.

and actually the lexington/louisville schools are putting their kids at a huge disadvantage. Most all other schools have kids playing middle school and then again at the freshman, JV, and sometimes even Varsity levels. The rural area schools simply take advantage of a great opportunity to let their kids get multiple games and seasons in at an early age (and yes I know many are opposed to middle school kids playing high school sports but the fact is it is going to continue to happen as long as the KHSAA allows it).

 

I wish somebody would do something to better the experience for the kids in Lex/Lou. They have major restrictions on games that don't allow for their teams to play hardly any out of city games. There are so many good athletes that fall through the cracks for all sorts of reasons. The Lexington kids will only play 12-15 games in a year. Some teams do that in a 2 week span. When Lexington and to a lesser degree Louisville starts to put more into their middle school athletics they will get much greater returns.

Like many people I believe parents should think hard about letting their 6-8 grader play varsity. While she physically can, to have those young girls hang out with 17-18 yo girls could be asking for trouble.

 

Another point, if this girl plays for the same coach for 5-7 years, what are the odds that kid gets burned out doing the same drills, plays, etc for that many years?

 

There are many inequities between the KHSAA and Lou/Lex schools. I wish that like the NCAA that all middle and high schools under the KHSAA had the same rules.

All the high school do play under the same rules...it's the middle schools that differ so much. Middle schools are not under the KHSAA umbrella, therefore they can do whatever they want and that's where the huge difference is.

I agree. I feel these girls are not developing. I know some of the rural schools like Bracken,Mason pull up 7th and 8th graders to play jv and varsity. I guarantee these same girls would not make jv or varsity at some of the nky schools. Watching some of them play I feel they don't have the fundamentals down. Watched Bracken middle school and not one could even do a lay up correctly. Eventually it will catch up
