1) Name the first CovCath grad to play football for CovCath, who then went on to play college football? Name him and where did he play at?

2) Name the class that sold the most World Famous Chocolate Bars and why did they work so hard to sell the most?

3) What year and what was the record of the first football team in CovCath history to have a winning record?

4) Name the Principal at CovCath who played football for CovCath?

Gee too tough?

I will give you the first one!

1) It was Bob Wieck of the class of 1968. Bob did not receive a football scholarship (he did receive an academic scholarship) as he attended Ivy league school Brown, but he was the first CovCath football player to play College football. Mark Phiffer (sp?) of the class of 1969 earned the first football scholarship and he attended Cin Xavier but due to the rules of the day, he couldn't play unitl his second year.

do you mean the principal at NewCath?

which would be Bob Noll

I'm guessing the candy bar sales were to raise money when they began their program in the mid-60s (1966 maybe?).

The class of 1968 was told that they would not be allowed to even try out for the first Varsity Football team at CovCath in it's inaugural 1967 season. When the class learned of the plan by the CovCath administration and Coaches, they as a group united and told the school that they would refuse to sell the candy bars unless they were allowed to play. Now the 68 class was a rather large class by today's standards (225 or close to that) so a comprisise was reached were as if the class of 68 sold more candy bars than any other class, the coaches and the administration would allow the class to try out for the team. Well indeed the class of 68 sold more candy bars than any other class and thus, Larry Erpenbeck, Steve McCafferty, Jim Wieck, Bob Wieck and Bill Wehr were the first seniors to ever play football for CovCath.

Steve McCafferty (68) was a member of the first CovCath varsity football team, and he became the Principal of CovCath after being the Head Master of Covington Latin.

Now if you had asked any of us back in the day who one day could/would be the Principal of CovCath from the class of 68, trust me McCafferty's name would not have been brought up by any of us!

After playing only one year of JV football, CovCath in their inaugural 1967 varsity season wound up going 5-4-1.

When you consider how few of the students played any kind of football prior to that season and the three seniors who started that season had never before even played a JV high school game, it was indeed a rather impressive way to start the tradition of CovCath Football.

As a proud member of that team, I am quite happy and proud to look at the six state football championship plaques hanging on the wall alongside the scoreboard and while I was never a member of those outstanding state championship teams, I feel we the class of 68, maybe had a bit to do with those plaques.

The proud tradition of CovCath Football, started with us!

Just saw this thread. I got them all right but #1.

My guess was Mark Pfeiffer.

Have any football records been broken in the last season or two?

What was the logic behind not allowing the '68 class to participate?

Only having one year to play football! Coach Rasso felt it was too much work and too little return to have Seniors on the team for only one year!

During my Senior year at Lloyd 1970 we scrimmage CovCath at Lloyd I even remember CovCath starting football and thought down the road they would be very good with the drawling they had. Yes the early days setup for those State Championhios and paved the road for CovCath. Great job and interesting facts. JD

yes

2008 Will Deters Single game rushing against Holmes 371 (?) yards

2009 Brayden Erpenbeck single game total offense against Dixie 436 yards

also Erpenbeck may be the first QB to rush for 1000 and throw for 1000 yards
