First of all, I attended public school for 13 years... If kids are dressing like "hookers and freaks," maybe how they're being raised should be evaluated. Other kids who know how to dress shouldn't be punished by having to wear a uniform because a smaller number of students either (A) has no taste or (B) has no guidance from their parents. You can have an atmosphere that is right for learning without a dress code just as easily as you can have the same atmosphere with a dress code. As I said, there would obviously be some rules to abide by, but dress codes are taking away students individuality....

 

For the parents of kids that are dressing like hookers, freaks and gangsters - what do you suggest that the schools do with them? If not the schools, who do you suggest "evaluate" them?

One of the most important aspects of enforcing any rule in a school system is consistency. This particular problem makes it extremely difficult. Dress codes have to be very specific but are still a major challenge even if they are. What is too much cleavage? What is too short?

 

If a female teacher sends a student to the office for improper dress, the parent calls her petty or jealous. If a single male such as myself does it, someone calls half the county and labels me as a pervert. Why did I even notice, I shouldnt have been looking!

 

I have been involved in setting and modifying these codes quite often. It is extremely frustrating. I believe that individuality is important to development but it also encourages pushing the envelope.

 

If it was my call alone I would go with uniforms. I must admit that call may be that I am sick of dealing with the problem and it is the only way to end it.
